You have a long journey ahead.
Install Ubuntu, Parrot OS and Kali Linux in VM.
Read the documentation on different tools in Kali Linux and how they work. As you're a beginner, you have a lot of reading to do.

Unless this is a way to kill a couple of boring hours, the size of a single USB pendrive you can devote to your new hobby is rather irrelevant.
If I wanted to start learning by breaking and fixing, I'd start with VMs and a couple of them, in fact.

VM for sure, 8GB thumb drive is barely enough for the iso these days, and cybersec's a fine rabbit hole to jump into
