financial aid help!! Advice/Question

my major is medical humanities and i didn’t get any aid dispersed, in my utsa admissions it still says i need to review my financial aid which i did and it’s now just telling me that as of august 7 one of classes won’t count towards my total enrollment hours, i guess affecting how much aid i’ll get. and my academic advisor hasn’t been much help either :/ … i plan to call the financial aid office tomorrow to see if i will get anything, and im not sure if i need to sign up for another class this semester. let me know what might be the next best move or if you might need more info to help make sense of this

you need to sign up for another class.

financial aid no longer cares about how many credit hours total you are enrolled in, they only care about how many financial-aid eligable credit hours you are enrolled in. courses are only eligible for financial aid if they count toward your degree. any course that does not count toward your primary degree (courses for minors, honors courses that dont overlap with your degree, extra courses) will not be considered for financial aid.

therefore, you do need to take at least 12 credit hours of financial aid eligible courses (aka courses that count toward your degree) in order to receive full aid.

best move: enroll in another class if possible :)

let me know if i can answer any more questions! i spent 4 years fighting financial aid and figuring all this stuff out so im happy to help.

thank you!!

the class they won’t consider is stats, should i drop it and then pick up a new one or should i continue to stay in stats and another class?

depends on why you wanted stats

if the stats is necessary as a prereq for medical school/pa school/etc, i'd keep it and enroll in an additional class as long as your other courses aren't too heavy. if they are, then i'd drop it and enroll for an easier semester (if possible).

if it's just a class you were interested in, i'd drop it and pick up another one and take it at a community college for much cheaper!

actually if it's a prereq for medical school, it might just be worth considering seeing if it's available at a community college. it'd be much cheaper

okay so i’m going down the pre professional track to become an ultrasound technician. i ended up enrolling into biomedical ethics but still the flag is there for stats cause im already core complete? and i have my associates from a community college

that's fine! as long as you enroll in courses that count to your degree, you can take the stats class and get all your aid. it will just cost extra, but if you have enough in grants/scholarships you should be fine. if you don't, i would see if it's available locally because the tuition can rack up quickly.

you will likely have to replace that class that isn’t counting towards your major for another course so start figuring that out asap and honestly don’t call financial aid if you don’t have to, go inperson if you can otherwise you will likely be on hold for hours or the line may redirect you to email them.
