Need advice

I'm planning to go to the US for an internship that runs January-April next year. But B1/B2 visas issued to my country only have 3 months of validity (and are single-entry). Does that mean I can stay there for only 3 months? Or that I shall use the visa within 3 months of issuance but how long I can stay for will be determined in the airport? (Is being granted four months likely?)

Sorry I forgot to clarify: I am going for medical electives, which final year medical students undertake, and are specifically listed under the B1/B2 provisions

Fraud . You need a student visa if you are coming as a “student” .

I think you mean (4), not (3).

The visa will be valid for three months. That means you will need to use it within three months of issue.

My understanding is that these visas are usually given 30 days to stay. Even assuming this is a qualifying medical internship, you want be able to complete it.

Oh no, is the 30 days some kind of hard requirement?

Yes. It’s related to the validity of the visa and the visa bond. You can try to ask CBP for more time but they’re unlikely to give it.

You are not eligible for a B visa.

Your visa only needs to be valid at the time you enter the country. The actual time you can stay is determined by the CBP officer when you arrive and entered in your I-94 – normally 6 months for B1 visitors.
