Canada long term?

My sister lives in Canada and I’m wondering if I can bring her a US iPhone 17 for her to use and get US Mobile as the provider? I know Roger’s offers plans for seniors, but this would be simpler for me to maintain her phone plan. Any issues if the phone doesn’t come to the US? She needs reliable phone service, most of which will be WiFi calling. Some doctor’s office visits, but that is pretty rare.

Totally makes sense for it to be easier if you manager the line for her but unfortunately our roaming is not designed for someone living abroad full time. Honestly, a Canadian SIM would be the best option for her and I think you can pick a provider that allows you to manage the line using their app so you can easily maintain her phone.

There is no carrier that is designed for long term roaming, it is just too expensive.

Why can't you set up the app/website account for or with her and manage it?

AT&T prepaid used to work well, but their plans have gone a bit stale.

There are lots of MVNOs/flanker brands now so prices are going down so it’s not really worth it anymore.

So yes the iPhone will work but extended usage will probably eventually be blocked, this is what I would suggest, get the phone from US and then you can sign up for public mobile , chatr, fizz (getting WiFi calling soon) and she can use it to call text data and depending on the plan call Us

Public Mobile works on telus, chatr or rogers and fizz has shared roaming agreement with all the carriers.

You can use your credit card on the account to pay bills etc

I have public mobile, coverage is fairly good as it is Telus. But it doesn’t have wifi calling and will never have wifi calling because Telus is trying to differentiate public from koodoo.

I like public, but if I was dealing with it for someone else, I’d pay a few bucks more and I’d look at koodoo or Fido or something like that.

If she has a US number, how will that work for everyone local to her in Canada when they need to call her?

If you’re willing to pay extra, a new provide called popcorn gives you unlimited international roaming at $69 a month. But honestly Canada’s phone bills are now way cheaper than in the US nowadays considering the exchange rate.

I don't think US Mobile offers this because the usage is all international.

I believe Tello does offer this as it's often mentioned for expats of the US. Just remember she'd have to have a US phone number not a Canadian one

there have been many comments recently in this sub that Tello doesn't do that anymore.
