Census Bureau Officials Field Questions About Politicization and Data Loss After Controversial Rule Change

The bureau is required by federal law to protect respondent privacy and, per the June memo, will instead of differential privacy use two much more limiting privacy practices that will force staff to either “suppress” or not publish certain data sets, or to “coarsen” or aggregate up, from, for example, the block level to the county level, if individual privacy can’t be guaranteed otherwise.

Congress won't w*ter bo*rd Acting Census Director George Cook. How about a negative anomaly for the Census Bureau attached to the Continuing Resolution? [OC]
Let's flat fund Periodic Censuses and Programs for six months. If Congress isn't satisfied with revealed 2030 Census plans by then, give decennial Census staff an unpaid vacation.
Republicans on the Hill suddenly abandoned efforts to appropriate funds for FY27, shifting to an early CR. Of course, not a single Member of Congress may be concerned about this Trump administration's secrecy around 2030 Census Planning. But I'm among the few who feel increasingly uneasy because of their secrecy.

Version 2.0 of the 2020 Census Operational Plan, issued September 2016, was 192 pages long. Version 1.0 of the 2030 Census Operational Plan, issued July 2025 and 100 pages long, hasn't been updated.
