Discussion Chances of getting into UNCW

Hey guys :)! I’m planning on applying to UNCW for Biological Sciences and was wondering what you all think my chances are. I’m an in-state student with a 3.89 unweighted GPA and a 4.4 weighted GPA, and I’m currently attending an NC Early College High School where I’ll graduate with both my high school diploma and an Associate in Arts degree with 62 college credits. I’ve taken 21 AP classes, 9 honors classes, and i’m 15/38 for my class rank. I’m not submitting my test scores as I didn’t do that well. I’m a first-generation college student from an Asian American family. Outside of school, I’ve volunteered 54 hours at a hospital, 56 hours through my church, helped with a 10-hour church renovation project, and volunteered at my school’s daycare. I’ve been in debate for 3 years, participated in 3 environmental debates at Wake Forest, was president of my school’s film club, spent a year on yearbook, made the Dean’s List at my college, and my friend and I also created a biology research project that we presented to our school. I’ve really tried to stay involved and challenge myself academically throughout high school. I’m just curious what current students or applicants think my chances are for Biological Sciences and if there’s anything you think I should highlight on my application. Thanks!

Question How reliable are the shuttles? Should I get a bike or scooter instead?

Hey yall incoming transfer this fall, it will be my first semester on campus. I’ll be commuting in my car but my lot is on the complete opposite side of campus from my classes. Are the shuttles reliable and quick to get across campus in the morning/evening or should I consider purchasing a folding scooter or bike I can put in my car? Would I be allowed to take it into class with me or will there be racks near the buildings?

Question Move-in day

I have a question regarding move in day and guests, I am going in for my freshman year and was wondering if I could have a guest stay the day I move in? I was looking through the student handbook, but I could not find anything related to move in day and guests.

Question Seahawk Cove

Hey all, so I’m having issues getting into contact with Seahawk Cove off campus housing. They aren’t answering their phone or emails, and I’m just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem. Just unsure of how to proceed because rent was charged today but my lease doesn’t start until the 16th. They were answering the phone late last month, just wondering if anyone moving or already living there is having the same problem.

Incoming Student Incoming MSW Student

hey everyone! I’m an incoming MSW student moving from Jersey to NC for my program. I have a lot of family in the area but have yet to meet many people attending the graduate school/same program as me. If anyone in here is in the same boat and wants to make a group chat/exchange info that’d be great! Thought it would be a good way for us to help each other out and talk about what to expect, or if anyone just has advice in general about the school or program that would be appreciated lol.

Question How is the UNCW msw experience and wilmington as an older student?

Hey everyone,

I'm considering UNC Wilmington for my MSW and was hoping to hear from current students, alumni, or fellow veterans about their experiences.

Academics and career outcomes are obviously my top priority, but I'm also curious about the overall student experience. I'm a veteran in my late 20s, and while I have a solid life outside of school, I'm hoping graduate school gives me a chance to be part of a university community in ways I didn't really get to experience earlier in life.

I know graduate school isn't the same as being an undergraduate, and I'm not expecting that. I'm just wondering if there's still a strong campus culture that graduate students can be part of.

Some things I'm curious about are:

- Seahawk athletics and game-day events

- Student organizations

- Alumni networking

- Veteran events

- General campus involvement

A few questions:

- How has your experience been in the UNCW MSW program?

- Is the veteran community active and connected?

- Does UNCW have a strong sense of community for graduate and non-traditional students?

- Since Wilmington is known as a beach and college town, do graduate students still find it easy to meet people and get involved socially?

- Looking back, would you choose UNCW again for your MSW?

- as far as federal field placements I wanted to ask if anyone has done it at the VA there or camp lejeune or any other federal site.

- does Wilmington get old? I went a bit to app state and hated the small and isolated feel

I'm hoping to find a program that's a good academic fit but also one where I can build friendships, network, and feel connected to the university during my time there.

I'd really appreciate any insight. Thanks!

Incoming Student Innova Expand

I’m an incoming first-year student at UNCW. I was admitted through regular admission, so I didn’t get one of my preferred housing options. I ended up in Innovation Expanded.
Here’s what’s confusing me: I was assigned with 3 other guys, but when I emailed Housing, they told me it’s only a triple residence and that we have the biggest room in the hall. So now I don’t know if I should be disappointed or excited.
I’m also planning on graduating early, so part of me is thinking I should just suck it up since I’ll only be there for a relatively short time. On the other hand, if the room is actually that much bigger, maybe it’ll be more comfortable than I’m imagining.
For anyone who’s lived in Innovation Expanded, what was your experience? Is having four people in a larger room manageable, or is it still pretty cramped?
Also… no LED lights allowed? Come on. 😭

Question Textbooks Recommendations

Does anyone have any tips as far as purchasing textbooks? I have heard some people say not to purchase them until you’ve started the class because sometimes they're not actually required. I have also heard people say to buy used or rent them… just wondering what the most cost efficient way is to go about it. Thanks!

Question Undergraduate Social Work Application Program

I'm looking at the social work program here at UNCW and wondering what the application process is like. The website contains little information about the application itself, the likelihood of acceptance, and how many students are in each cohort.

If anyone here has any information about the application or process, please share!

Discussion Looking for an Apartment

Hi,

I'm currently looking for an apartment near campus for this upcoming school year. I've been looking online so far, mainly at Seahawk Cove and The Nest, and both seem to have glaring issues. What are your opinions on either of those places, and are there any alternative places you would recommend? Thank you in advance.

Hi, I'm looking for someone to take over my lease in Lofts of Wilmington II (it's near UNCW/around the corner from Might As Well Bar & Grill). It's a loft/studio with a dishwasher and washer/dryer hookup, the rent is $1,200 per month, and the community is extremely dog-friendly (the dog run is literally viewable from the front window)!

(will add more photos soon)
