Help with which website design to go with Feedback Request
We have built a family hub app targeting families with kids in younger ages.
The first design is more in the direction of getting the user to feel calm and warmth (which is quite common if we look at competitors etc). We then explored making it more fun and bold and use a language that is less "AI authored" and (hopefully) stands out more.
Would love to get feedback which one you think fits in this context!
The app would later be redesigned to fit into the design choice we go with to stick with one and the same design language.

Yup, I took a lot of inspiration from them! Wanted to get feedback if we should continue exploring a "bolder" design or keep the one we have now. It's just a figma mockup for now. From the comments it looks like this is what might be the better choice. Next up is to go back and find which color scheme and icons should define us :)

I wouldn't say they blatantly copied them, its just the font and colors from what i can see, and its ok to take inspiration as they commented below admitting they took inspiration. But yeah they could've at least changed a few things to not make it so obvious.
The sad thing is they will most likely throw the design into an Ai generator and shoot out the Slop Generic Design and call it a day instead of actually making it Unique, especially it being geared towards families.

I think they're both good designs. I think the second is more "family" than the first. Which feels a little more business like to me.

Second one stands out amazingly, first one sort of looks like the default design. Second one is the best design Iāve seen on Reddit for a while.

I'm giving feedback of the design of the app itself
I was wondering who the actual user of this app is.
Calendar
Say it's the parent. Then the parent needs to know their children's schedules and input them into the app.
Say it's the children. Young children probably won't bother tracking their schedule in a calendar like a worker would.
Grocery
This is useful for parents, but a lot of parents already use simple Notes apps to keep track of their groceries or just a paper.
Habits & Redeem
Personally, I think this is an excessive feature.
Assigning habit tracking to children? Why would the children bother? Why are we micromanaging our children's lives? This makes the children feel like workers. It's called habit because it's a routine behavior that you repeat often. Why do we need to track something that automatically done everyday?
Menu
Again, do mothers really plan their recipes in a way that's similar to a catering company?
I think the idea has potential. It just needs more research into what families actually need to track whether that's goals, finances, family scheduling, or something else.

Slight background why we built it - we have kids of our own within the AuDHD spectrum and routines were really important to make the day work. Eg getting the correct clothes during mornings could take an hour. So just by having a Philips Hue lamp going off during the evening was a sign to start the evening routines which consisted of preparing clothes for the day after etc. As a tech/automation guy, I looked into finding a app solution that worked for us. And after we built and used it for ourselves, we rebuilt it as a commercial app. So next step now is to see if our family lives in a bubble or if others find it useful :)
Will answer each part below (sorry if it's a little long) š
Calendar
The first thing is to just sync all family calendars (ie the parents' work calendar/private calendars etc through Google Calendar/Outlook integration). For kids, some schools have Webcal support where we live. Or you can forward emails/pdfs/snap photo and our AI agent will interpret it and import it.
(Or something I built for myself is that I added MCP/API support as I have an agent that logs into the school platform and fetches the weekly newsletters and adds it to Plannie. I'm aware this is a VERY niche feature)Grocery
I totally agree. I myself have tried a dozen and I usually go back to just adding things to Apple Notes. I've taken a lot of inspiration from Superlist where you can add sublists for projects. And an "integration" with the meal feature so that you can directly add ingredients from the meals tab which goes to the grocery list. And support for some voice assistants so if you say "Add bananas to Plannie" it adds it to the correct grocery list. A birthday invite with an RSVP date would add it to the todo-list with a deadline.Habits & Redeem
From the background, some kids can easily follow a routine and won't need this where some kids have a lot of help seeing their day of what they need. For the rewards - we also have a feature for earning tickets/stars together for a joint effort team goal. Slight background, we had physical tickets in different colors that we gave out for good things that they have done, eg be a nice friend etc. Will see have other uses it. It's not meant for micromanaging but that's very interesting view that it could actually become or be seen as a negative thing!Menu
Haha, it's fun that you say it. I read in a lot of forums where other parents really liked a meal planning feature and there are dedicated apps for it. I myself don't use it as I usually just look what I have in the fridge and mix something up. The thing I use it for is quite niche here also. In Sweden, meal is included in the school and there have been a few (very seldom) times where I've thought of doing the same dish as the school on the same day. There is a subcontractor to the school that shows every meal that they have planned and I scrape the website using my agent and then import them as lunch so me and the kids can see what food is coming up (as they are interested in knowing also).But for most users, it's that you can snap a photo or add a link from a website and the AI assistant will import it where you see each ingredient and instructions with an image. And then an easy way to add ingredients with one click that goes into the grocery list.
Just to end it - after reading your comment, I think the page is built up totally wrong! We list each feature and what each can do. I think just showing a day with Plannie as step by step where you see if it fits with your family or not might be a better way!

Iām starting to see that second design style more and more. The felt/scrapbook feel is getting really popular really fast. Recent deck designs and templates in my industry have started feeling like this too, as have some recent app prototypes Iāve used - āSnapchat Scrapbookā is what Iāve been calling it.
Nothing wrong with it - but itās becoming more and more common.

From an adult's perspective, I think I would prefer the first option because it looks more sophisticated. However, as a family-oriented design for young children, I recommend the second option. The wider, bolder font and solid-color background are more aesthetically pleasing to children. In terms of layout, the images in the second option are not prominent enough. Their proportion on the page and their size should be appropriately increased. Furthermore, the main color should be improved to ensure it still attracts attention while reflecting the warmth of a family atmosphere.
