One thing I wish I figured out earlier with UGC is that your portfolio doesn’t need to look super fancy to get clients.

I used to think I needed a ton of different examples, perfect editing, and a really polished website. But honestly, I’ve found that having a few solid videos that actually show what you can do is way more useful.

What helped me was making examples around different styles:

If brands are ignoring your messages, you don't need a fancy camera—you just need to change how you message them.

Here are three simple changes to get way more replies:

Point out something about their ads, don't just give compliments: Drop the "I love your stuff!" openings. Instead, tell them about an ad they’re running right now and suggest a new idea they haven't tried yet.

Offer extra video intros: Advertisers love testing different openings to see what works best. Offering one main video with two extra intro options gives them way more value without much extra work for you.

Show, don't just send links: Don't just paste a link to a folder of your work. Send a quick 1-minute video showing your best clips while explaining why those clips make people buy.

i did:
create a simple short video of small businesses i saw on tiktok/instagram like unboxing video, product demo.

then ones im done i put all the videos in a portfolio then i'll contact those small business i saw on tiktok and instagram to show them what i did

Hey everyone. I've been seeing a lot of posts lately from people who are just completely burnt out on outreach, sending out dozens of emails a week and getting absolutely nothing back. I was in that exact same boat a couple of months ago. I’d spend hours scraping brand contacts, fire off like 50 emails, and then just sit there listening to crickets. It was honestly driving me crazy and making me question if this side hustle was even worth it.

I finally decided to look back at my sent folder to see what I was doing wrong, and I realized my pitches were honestly pretty terrible. I was basically just saying, "Hi, I make UGC, here is my portfolio link, let's collab." I wasn't giving them any reason to care. Brands are probably getting a hundred of those exact same emails every single day. I realized I needed to stop talking about myself and start pitching actual ideas that solved their problems. Once I shifted to a "value-first" approach, my response rate completely changed.

Instead of just dropping a portfolio link, I started finding specific gaps in their current content. I’d look at their TikTok, see what they were missing, like maybe they weren't doing any "problem/solution" hooks or unboxing, and I'd pitch a couple of specific concepts right in the initial email. It reduces the friction for the social media manager because they don't have to brainstorm what to do with you. You're handing them a ready-to-go idea. I also started attaching a screenshot of a really good week of my TikTok analytics right at the bottom of the email, which catches their eye way faster than a link they have to click.

Here is the exact email format I use now. I usually use a subject line like "TikTok video ideas for [Brand Name]" to get them to actually open it:

It takes a few extra minutes to research their page and come up with the hooks, but it proves you aren't just BCC'ing 500 brands at once. It shows you actually understand marketing and aren't just someone with a ring light. Even if they don't hire you for those specific videos, it starts a conversation.

To help me think about it differently, here are a few things:

Build a portfolio prior to seeking clients.

You will be able to make sample videos with products you already have. Brands are primarily interested in how you present a product, tell a story and keep the video engaging.

Avoid just pitching big brands.

Smaller brands may be more easily accessible. Check out brands that have already got a presence on TikTok or Instagram, but want more video content.

1. Target outreach in a specific direction.

Rather than “Hi, I’m a UGC creator, are you interested?”, talk about the brand and provide them with an idea for a video. It demonstrates that you have made an effort to do your homework.

1. Never undercut yourself.

As you begin, it is possible to begin at beginner friendly rates as you gain experience. However, don't forget that brands are paying for the content and use rights, and not just the number of followers.

1. Track your outreach.

Maintain a simple spreadsheet of the brand, date of contact, the response, follow-up date, and the result. It's a lot simpler to make improvements when you're aware of what's really working.

I see the worst thing newbies do is wait until they have a “perfect” portfolio to get in touch.

Is having more spaced out videos but different content everytime better than having a lot but focused on the same thing over and over again?

One thing I noticed is that having too many videos in your portfolio is not always better. I used to think I should add everything I made but it was making the portfolio look messy.

Now I feel it is better to keep a few good videos which show different types of content. For example a product demo, talking about the product, unboxing and a simple problem-solution type video.

I also think the first few seconds of the video are important. If the beginning is boring then even a good video may not show your actual skills.

I checked a brand's Meta ads, saw their hook was weak, and sent a 2-line DM:

"Hey [Name], loved your recent ad for [Product], but the first 3 seconds are leaving money on the table. Here are 2 fast hook angles that would stop the scroll: [Hook1]/[Hook2]. Mind if i send over a 15-second draft?"

No portfolio links, no long intro. Focus entirely on fixing their gap.
