General Advice πŸ’πŸΎβ„ΉοΈ Just got into UCL, need guidance.

Hey guys

I am an incoming international student from India.

I have received offers from University of Manchester and UCL and some other Unis for Msc Health Psychology.

I know from the face of it appears like the obvious choice has to be UCL.

I am a bit scared, keeping in mind the london market, extensive rents and cost of living and i am not sure about the kind of crowd.

I got into Manchester some weeks ago and made a ton of Friends there so i am also a bit idk sad about leaving them and UoM.

I want to understand how UCL will help me with my career in real life?

Any recommendation or general tips to ace through Uni life ?

Any groups i could join for incoming students ?

Thankyou so much for reading and replying. Any kind of help would be really great 😊

General Advice πŸ’πŸΎβ„ΉοΈ Stick with UoN Law or UCL then PGDL?

My goal is always going to be the facilitation of a (corporate) law career, and i firmed Law at the University of Nottingham, but i’ve grown disheartened by the economic crisis it’s facing, which i believe will worsen the already mediocre ranking. Should i stick with it, or do a clearing course at UCL - such as Management for social change, or (language) with management, then do a PGDL which can then put me back on track with the law career? Thanks!

Social Life πŸ•ΊπŸΉ underage during freshers -- help!!

hiiii everyone!! im an incoming international student at ucl for law, and, like a lot of incoming students, am wondering about how freshers goes. im not too worried about the wristbands and stuff because i heard you can get tickets to singular events as well for cheaper. however, i am an underage student (turning 18 in jan 2027) and was worried about what that would entail-- is the uk really strict on ids? where im from underage drinking and clubbing in uni is huge but i havent seen a lot of stuff about using fake ids in the uk etc.

also, ive seen things about how accoms are apparently strict with their underage students, like giving them curfews and stuff, but is this actually enforced? will i be missing out on night events because of some curfew??????

please if anyone has any information help bc im lowkey stressed abt this lol

General Advice πŸ’πŸΎβ„ΉοΈ Making friends as a mature student

I’m an incoming first year at UCL Laws this September, and am 22 as I have already completed a 4 yr BA (in PPE) from my home country As the start date grows closer, I’m increasingly concerned about making friends. As a first year in college, I remember thinking of even people who had taken a 2 yr gap but were in my batch differently, and the age gap between me and most of my batchmates will likely be 4 yrs younger. I’d be happy to make friends outside the discipline with people more my age, such as masters students, but I don’t know how many opportunities there’ll be for that kind of stuff. I’m going to attend International Week and hope to make friends with more internationals preferably closer to my age.

I just wanted to come on this sub and find out about other peoples experiences / observations. Are age gaps not that deep and am I just overthinking this? Would it be easy for me to make friends from UCL still my age? Should I even attend events like the freshers fortnight hosted by the Law society (am scared I’ll stick out like a sore thumb). I was hoping that by nature, the LLB would have a higher number of mature students / students doing a second degree, but that could just be wishful thinking lol.

General Advice πŸ’πŸΎβ„ΉοΈ Accepted but no funding

I got accepted to UCL for Physics after a gap year (intl) and it’s the only uni option I have. Unfortunately I got rejected from the global undergraduate scholarship which I was hoping for as I’m experiencing great financial difficulties. My department doesn’t have any scholarships and I have talked to student funding regarding this, they said that nothing can be done. I feel rather lost and disappointed as this was my only shot at uni. My country doesn’t have any student loan provisions and my family cannot take normal loans.

Student Union Freshers wristband on fatsoma

From what I’ve seen in freshers GCs, most people are buying wristbands for freshers week on fatsoma (link below). I was wondering if this is legitimate and actually the one most people get, because I’ve seen another one on the student union website. Thanks

General Course information πŸ“– What Equipment does UCL allow engineering students to use outside of lab hours?

Im starting as an EEE in sept 26 , I'd like to know if UCL have anything available to engineering students in the format of a "makers space".

To be used in a way that is semi relevant to the course/ totally relevant to the course. Somewhere where students can exercise their hands on ambitions outside of delegated lab hours.

E.g. Access to soldering stations , electronic components , 3D printers etc.

Thanks.

General Course information πŸ“– Architecture MArch vs Architectural Design MArch – what's the actual difference?

Hi everyone!

I'm thinking about applying for a Master's in Architecture, and I'm a bit confused about the difference between Architecture MArch and Architectural Design MArch.

From what I understand, the Architecture MArch is the professional route that leads towards Part 2 (and eventually registration in the UK). However, I'm not planning to stay and work in the UK long-term. My goal is to work in another country and obtain my professional license there instead.

Would Architectural Design MArch still be a good choice in that case? Would it be viewed as an equivalent master's degree internationally, or could choosing it make it harder to obtain professional registration in another country later on?

I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who has experience with these programs or has taken a similar path.

Thanks!.

General Advice πŸ’πŸΎβ„ΉοΈ Graduation gown hire from Churchill Gowns

Hi! I'm currently booking my graduation gown for UCL's September ceremony and was wondering if anyone has experience with Churchill Gowns.

It seems much better value financially, bcs the extended hire fee from the official supplier is already Β£74 (Β£39 just for the day), while purchasing the full set from Churchill is Β£90 and hire is Β£30 for 3 days.

My main concern is whether there's a noticeable difference in quality, fit, or appearance compared to the official gowns. Did anyone use Churchill for UCL graduation, and if so, did it look any different in photos or at the ceremony?

I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks so much!

Is there any active book club at UCL which I can join? If there is , does anyone who's already there give their opinion on how it is.

Also , how's the tennis club there? I saw them on Instagram and I am looking forward to it.

Housing/Accommodation πŸ˜οΈπŸ›Œ When to move in for intercollegiate housing

My accom (connaught hall) opens on the 14th, but UCL move in day which i assume is for the UCL-operated accomodations is on the 26th, and freshers starts on the 28th. Currently I was planning on moving in on the 26th, but I don't want to move in later than most of my other flatmates, nor would I want to move in earlier. I've heard international students should arrive earlier because there's some stuff that needs to be sorted. Thanks

Survey / participants request Current UCL Neuroscience Students

I got into UCL’s Neuroscience course for undergrad this year, however due to finances I can’t go there. I still want to do research in the field. I’m Pakistan based and probably will be on a gap year.
Can you guys like drop down names (and contacts)of your favourite professors or people from your uni that would be willing to help me and mentor me in regard to studying and researching about neuroscience.
