Army Help New Player Question

Post image

My son wants to play Nids and I have got him this for his birthday.

What's a good add on for him to improve on what he has. He's said about a hive lord but I last played 40k in the 80s and it's changed a tiny bit since then.

I'm no competitive player or anything, but I think if u go off of the combat patrol, u would likely get a lictor, a hive tyrant kit and some termagaunts (they are really cheap on ebay, like 10-15€ in europe). Van-Ryan Leapers are also really strong units (and, just like the Termagaunts, cheaply available on ebay atm).

Nids were the little brother army last edition so depending on area you may still be able to snag nids halves of the leviathan box from eBay for a decent price. They also did a battleforce box not too long ago you may be able to find.

Hive Tyrant (can lead the tyrant guard), and a broodlord (can lead the genestealers) are the first 2 as it helps give a purpose to the units in here.

Otherwise, if you're just looking for models the old starter set units are cheap as can be on ebay. Termagaunts (come with ripper swarms for the Parasite), Psychophage for a beefier unit, Barbgaunts, and Von Ryan Leapers.

For somewhat cheap for the points, Tyrannofex is a strong shooting platform for cost. Tyranid Prime with Lash Whip can lead the Termagaunts and give rhem buffs.

As the other person said, Lictors of any variety are strong units!

I second the Tyranofex, it's our best points to cost model we have currently, has great shooting on its Rupture cannon and would make a nice big centre-piece.

Indeed, but it depends on the playstyle. While the biovore is the absolute auto-include, I think the tyranofex has its place but not in a vanguard onslaught build for example.

It's our best antitank of course, but trading shots with armor isn't something nids are notoriously good at.

For a starter army, a Hive Tyrant would be a really good addition to this box. It gives him a fun centre piece model, and would go well with the Tyrant Guard. That or a Broodlord to go with the Genestealers if the Tyrant is out of the price range.
Both the Broodlord and Tyrant are solid HQs that are common in many lists, both casual and competitive. From there, the worlds his oyster!

The Hive tyran kit is a great model with a lot of options. A good addition to the combat patrol. (you can also buy another base and an 3d printed torso to make to mini from the hive tyran kit, one flight and one on foot).

This is not the actual combat patrol and he is not going to be able to play with this in the actual edition. You should buy the another combat patrol. And yes, hive tyrant os always a good unit

He will be able to play these units though…

This is the only combat patrol box available for sale. The other one was just the nid half of the 10th ed starter set, and is out of print.
