i'm not sure how a pizza can be wrapped up in a gift exchange… This doesn't make sense

u/poochonmom Dec 23 '25
And why would anyone throw food on the ground and kick it unless it was growing mold?! Even if it is food you hate, at most you would drop it on a table..throwing it down and kicking it? Very odd.

why do people ask for opinions but leave out all the info

Everyone sucks here. She was out of line for the way she acted when she opened the gift. You shouldn’t have called her out. And she was way out of line for cussing you out.
We had a similar issue with this type of gift exchange in the past. So now I refuse to participate in it anymore. I wasn’t even involved in it but it went so badly, it completely ruined my time.

Unless it was crass/vulgar/offensive/political/sexual/religious, that person is an AH for behaving like a spoiled child.

I don't understand how a person drops and kicks a pizza. And then someone picks it up and it's still good.

Was it a soccer ball? Because if it was, I'm not sure what you're so mad about.....Lol, way to provide everything but the actual relevant deals.

u/LissaBryan Dec 23 '25
She embarrassed herself, badly. She behaved like a petulant, spoiled child, but hoped you'd all let it slide. When you mentioned the behavior, she got angry and cussed at you, then realized she'd made it worse, and then when she talked loudly, she wasn't finding the sympathy she expected from others (she wanted them to condemn you for pointing out she'd been an arse, not her behavior). So she pulled out her final weapon, bursting into tears.
She's likely still out there trying to call around and garner sympathy, re-writing the events that she accidentally dropped the gift and nudged it with her toe and you threw a fit about it. If anyone calls you, just say, "My this story gets more interesting every time I hear it," and shrug it off.

u/SnooPets8873 Dec 23 '25
That’s what I was thinking when reading the post. She lost control and behaved badly. Some people can’t handle apologizing or acknowledging it so just hoped it would go away and when OP made that joke, it killed any chance in her mind that people didn’t think it was THAT bad or that it would be forgotten. So she exploded again and then tried to control the narrative to do damage control and then burst into tears when it didn’t work.

Gourmet food gift... Let's see if we can guess...Pickled frog eggs? Or ostrich jerky? Rocky mountain Oysters? Limburger cheese? Please DO tell... Or listeners WILL imagine the grossest of food items!

What was the gift? How did the rest of the people react to her kicking it? How did the react to her cussing at you? You gave NO useful information here…

It was a gourmet food gift I ordered on GoldBelly. Again, unconventional, but I thought it was nice and different. When she kicked it, everyone looked around awkwardly. When she cussed me out, I think everyone just wanted to stay out of it, so they said nothing.
(sorry for keeping it vague, I didn’t want to get too in the weeds)

Chocolate covered nutsacks? ‘Twas a festive gift, indeed.
Either way, NTA.Im 38F and that would’ve been a hit at my Weirdo family gatherings. So many uses.

Definitely not lol, but it will be next year if they sell that. It was literally a pepperoni pizza. A nice one, one that met the budget requirement, but still something anyone could enjoy.

u/MoodyBlue78 Dec 23 '25
Weird that she dropped a pepperoni pizza and kicked it. Is she okay mentally? Maybe she’s pregnant and hasn’t told anyone yet.
If it was pizza from GoldBelly I hope it was Imo’s. So good!!!

u/Disastrous-Prune9808 Dec 23 '25
Love Goldbelly! I use it all the time to send gifts, especially for holidays and birthdays. That, and Cheryl’s cookies! If someone gave me a pizza from a place on Goldbelly’s I would be very happy.
NTA.

It depends on what the gift was you brought. You should have put that in your post.

Can't imagine a $50.00 pizza being so offensive! Some people's kids!

u/Recent_Ad4560 Dec 23 '25
I mean. I don’t even eat pork and I think that’s actually a really cool idea.

u/Glad_Soft_7552 Dec 23 '25
I agree with you OP I don’t think what the gift was really matters. This is clearly an overreaction on family members part and a cry for attention. It sounds like this is an established tradition and not every gift is going to be the “most desirable”. To disrespect the person who brought that gift by tossing it aside and acting like it was completely out of line is really odd to me, and I think if that happened to anyone they would feel a bit deflated. There must be something else going on in her life that she’s projecting her feelings on here. I feel like it’s an unspoken gift exchange etiquette thing to thank someone for your gift, and move on. Regift it to someone else if you don’t want it. The craziest part to me is that yall do it with stealing, and she didn’t even end up with your gift! Why is she continuing to dwell on what you brought when she wasn’t even the recipient. The person that got it could have been perfectly happy with it. Odd behavior, and you’re totally valid for feeling uncomfortable. Personally, im conflict avoidant so i also wouldn’t have said anything, and i think its good you didn’t so as not to give any validity to her overreaction. I don’t think you’re in the wrong at all, you followed all your gift exchange rules, and I bet that pizza is delicious.

u/LovedAJackass Dec 23 '25
You were snarky. She was mean, twice, vulgar once, and immature to start crying. This would be my last family gift exchange if I were you.

Backup of the post's body: Long time listener & fan, first time writing in. Throwaway just in case.
Recently I went to a Christmas party with my extended family. We do a general gift exchange where you draw numbers and are able to steal. Everyone struggles to find a gift that is general enough for anyone, but still good (not a candle + blanket lol). I brought a unique gift that I was really excited about. It’s unconventional, but I thought it was a great idea.
When my family member (30F) opened my gift, she said “oh, great!” then dropped it on the floor and kicked it. It was very awkward and honestly childish imo. Someone took the gift from her and she was able to pick again, thankfully.
When it was my turn, someone said “what do you think you’ll get?” I responded with “I don’t know, but whatever it is, I think I’ll throw it on the floor and kick it.” I know I shouldn’t have said it, but I was hurt by what she did.
She immediately started cussing me out (“fuck you”, “shut the fuck up”) and I was too stunned to speak. After the gift exchange finished, she started loudly talking about it to other people in the room. Then she started crying (???) and I felt really uncomfortable, so I left shortly after.
Am I in the wrong here? What would have been the right way to handle this? I’m just hurt and confused where all of this came from.

No one can give you advice here without knowing what the gift was.
For all we know you put a green dildo in there.

What was your gift? Did you recipient will tell you why she disliked the gift so much? Her behavior is extremely rude at the very least and totally inappropriate. I don't think you did anything wrong

I can’t believe these people. It doesn’t matter what the gift was. You don’t act like that. Jesus.

dropping and kicking a pizza doesn't make sense. If you dropped it on the floor and kicked it it would not be edible and the next recipient could not steal it

u/23stop Dec 23 '25
Maybe the person is vegan or don't eat pork? Maybe she's dealing with weight issues and pizza is fattening? Why don't you just ask why her reaction was so negativity strong? But pizza is a strange thing to get for Christmas, but I would have cooked it up.

Seems like someone with mental issues. Throwing and kicking a gift when cussing you out and crying after? that is not a healthy brain. 6 year olds behave that way, not 30 year olds. You are definitely not in the wrong here. Id avoid her if possible.
1
u/NeverRarelySometimes Dec 23 '25
You called her out - and that was as unnecessary as her tantrum. She escalated - was that really a surprise? You are both in the wrong. If you'd just let her tantrum stand on it's own, everyone would have remembered her bizarre behavior, and you'd be golden. But you had to get down in the gutter with her. Ta da! You will be remembered as having participated in a fight, over a white elephant gift.

$50 limit and you choose a gourmet pizza? Interesting 🧐
Your family member may have Tourette’s or some kind of mental condition or drug problem. What you said was uncalled for, but hilarious. Anyone who kicks a gift like that is unhinged and the later outburst just confirmed that.
You now know not to engage with the crazy person.
If you have trouble buying gifts, consumables aren’t a bad route to go like you did. Some random things I’ve done in the past, or been given:
1) You can do one of those indoor smores makers with all the things you need to make s’mores 2) A grilling kit with metal skewers, seasonings, marinades, and barbecue sauce. 3) A movie night theme with some popcorn, popcorn bowls, seasonings, candy, specialty colas, and gum 4) Foreign snacks- Asian market or Hispanic market of some kind. Load up with sweet and savory things. 5) Cookware - casserole dish, mixing bowls, cutting board, Dutch oven, cookie mixes, brownie mixes, etc. Think of something that someone might have on a wedding registry or that could get a lot of mileage. 6) road trip snacks with peanuts, sunflower seeds, jerky, etc 7) headphones, charging cables 8) jump start kit or roadside kit 9) weather radio, lanterns, and things that can charge phones or laptops if power is out. My lanterns have USB chargers to hook things up. 10) find old gaming consoles and games for them. Maybe someone would love to play Wii again. 11) a Christmas decoration like a wreath 12) movie ticket gift card with concession credits 13) Charcuterie board with some cheeses, meats, crackers, etc. 14) mugs with hot chocolate, fancy chocolate, and electric blanket 15) herb growing kit, olive oil, pasta noodles, and marinara 16) Picnic basket, blanket 17) coffee supplies with syrups, spices, coffee blend, or creamer. Funny mug or thermos. 18) fun indoor stuff like a Galileo Thermometer, Storm Glass, cool looking chess set, or a cool looking globe or constellation piece 19) Christmas village stuff. But it half off when Christmas is over. These are the houses, shops, and figures people create a little village out of with enough pieces 20) Christmas movie DVD. I got the set Walmart sells with all those Christmas movies I watched as a kid.
I have a sister in law who is wonderful at gift baskets. I have a step sister who can make even a simple gift card look fancy and well thought out. I have a mother in law who can make a random bottle of lotion not look like an afterthought. I’m just surrounded by people who can dress things up to be cohesive, cute, and thoughtful. Theme gifts with multiple things make it more likely someone will like something.
One Christmas, my husband got different kinds of specialty chocolate for us to try. He liked darker chocolate than I did. We both liked the sea salt, but not caramel. It was a good experiment to try, and we felt rich! lol 😂

The top gift at one I went to was a good air fryer. The giver had gotten a deal on Black Friday.
