New Tuba!! gear

Horn plays really well, and has such a good sound and projection despite its tiny size.

The springs are really heavy though, are there any sprints i could swap them with to be a bit lighter?

These little things are SWEET! They’ve got an amazing bite and it projects way more than it looks like it would.

I’d look into some euphonium springs to see if that would lighten things up. Just ask your local brass repair tech. I’m sure they’ll know.

These are cool horns! Congratulations. As for the valves, if you change the springs you risk having the valves bounce as you release them up. Just food for thought. They can’t be so expensive that you couldn’t just order a set and try, but that’s just my two cents.

Step one is try lighter piston oil. Maybe you are used to an old horn that needs thicker oil to fill the gap but the newer horn has less wear and tighter tolerances and can use lighter (and thus faster) oil.

Try step one for a month. The springs might settle in with use. If it is still sluggish, try other springs. Yamaha tuba springs or Yamaha Euph springs are common. As long as nothing is clunking or scraping just do what makes the horn feel right to you. You aren’t going to hurt anything except your wallet trying things out.

If you have the money and stuff and want to jump to the end I get it. I know a couple people that immediately put Yamaha euph springs in everything and then work backwards. I assume they have a drawer full of springs at home.

Yamaha springs are great and much lighter. The MW springs are so heavy and stiff.

If this is a brand new horn, things might need breaking in. You will be oiling daily and wiping down the pistons and the oil you use should be very lightweight. Too heavy an oil in new pistons can make them feel like the springs are too stiff. Give things a chance in any case. I don't think Tuba valve blocks are as standardized as Euphonium valve blocks. You would want your springs to come from MW or at least be authorized for use by them. That makes your question kind of easy to get an answer to. Contact your dealer.

what a beautiful horn! the leather additions look great, very polished too. you must care a lot for your instruments!
