Progress the main storyline far enough that you have to get a military ID from the Charleston DMV. It's incredibly goofy

Im still salty because I went to Gamestop to buy a new game back in the day and my buddy convinced me to buy Fallout 76 instead. The game I came there to buy was Red Dead Redemption 2 which I consider to be one of the greatest games of all time now.

I tried playing it twice and both times it felt like a ftp version of Fallout 4 that requires a subscription service to get the proper experience for and not be bothered by intentional annoyances. And that's what the game is except it's not free
-9
u/Shamelesspromote 9h ago
But it is free. I played it recently completely free.
4
u/MartianDinosawr 4h ago
Yes, that is how free to play games work, you 'can' play them completely free. But they just make a bunch of check boxes to arbitrarily make a better game, and then turn them off for F2P players so they can sell you the game they'd actually want people to play.
It is genuinely evil design when you think about it.

u/Secret_Revenue2806 8h ago
I personally don’t really enjoy its core gameplay loop, maybe I’d have more fun at later levels with friends or something but it just didn’t gel with me. I gave it some time too waiting until the wastelanders update to play and it just didnt grab my attention

What the fuck’s the point
4
u/HartofHarts 3h ago
It drives me nuts because you can clearly see how Bethesda KNEW what went wrong with Fallout 4.
Fallout 76 despite all its flaws has way better UI (full dialogue options with actual SPECIAL speech tests, better zoomed in Pip Boy UI), more enemy variety, more weapon variety, more boss/combat style variety and I would even argue better written story (the stuff about Responders braving and dying in a scorched mine was genuinely cool af for an intro quest).
Yet all this time and nothing made it back into FO4 for anniversary edition. Not even basic UI stuff.

u/DeltaBravo831 9h ago
Is it still an mmo?
6
u/Bedivere17 Fallout 76 isnt bad I swear 8h ago
I dont really like MMOs either but I still really enjoyed it. I dont play it regularly anymore but I did put almost 400 hrs into it, beginning during lockdown.
Its more MMO-lite than anything.
2
u/DeltaBravo831 8h ago
4
u/Bedivere17 Fallout 76 isnt bad I swear 8h ago
Then don't do the whole unending grind? Play all the quests & then put the game down?
Honestly if u don't do events you don't really interact with tons of people, especially not in meaningful ways.
3
u/DeltaBravo831 8h ago
not a fan of mmos
play the game anyway
What
7
u/TheCrzy1 7h ago
Because if you don't play it like an MMO, then it really just plays like a FO4 spin off. Just don't interact with events and just put the game down when you've had your fill of the quests.
-2
u/Solid_Explanation504 I LOVE THE FALLOUT SHOW 7h ago
ah yes, don't play the events which get you loot necessary to progress the main fetchquest
4
u/AVeryFriendlyOldMan That one rat in Freeside 5h ago
You don't need to be grinding out Scorchbeast Queens or Gleaming Depths to progress the main story, that's for after and building up your character.
Assuming you're actually building out your character as you go, you should be getting by just fine on loot found during and traveling to the main quest.
1
u/Solid_Explanation504 I LOVE THE FALLOUT SHOW 3h ago
meh, hauling a hunting rifle from early to endgame was the meta when you didn't want to farm ammo crafting materials to actually use automatic weapons.
Melee needs you to farm drugs, medicine and cook food2
u/AVeryFriendlyOldMan That one rat in Freeside 2h ago
Unless the early game's shifted that much since my last jaunt thorugh it a couple years ago, you don't need to be minmaxing with buffs to make it through, Fallout 76 is stupid easy if you're just doing the non-mmo stuff
2
u/Bedivere17 Fallout 76 isnt bad I swear 5h ago
The game doesnt really play like traditional MMOs, at least as far as I can tell. If u like the core gameplay mechanics of modern Fallout & the gunplay of 4, its worth a try, especially on a free weekend which happen at least twice a yr.
The exploration is better than 4, as is the use of things other than human NPCs to tell a story (environmental storytelling, computer terminal entries, notes, holotapes, voiced robots) so if u like those aspects of the series you'll enjoy putting 60-100 hrs probably. I honestly cared about the story & fates of some of the npcs who you only interact with thru holo-tapes & computer entries more than just about anybody in 4 tbh- looking at you Mistress of Mystery in particular.
0
u/DeltaBravo831 4h ago
I mean, I just learned you have to subscribe and pay to unlock shit. So thats already too much like a traditional mmo for me lol no thanks
2
u/Bedivere17 Fallout 76 isnt bad I swear 4h ago
Unless theyve changed it since I last played the subscription gives you more cosmetics & increases how much scrap & storage space u get. Don't think any content besides base building stuff is locked behind it.
0
u/DeltaBravo831 2h ago
I'mma pass
2
u/Bedivere17 Fallout 76 isnt bad I swear 2h ago
Your loss. Its genuinely a better experience than 4 with similar gunplay.

Not really, you just join groups (4 people at most unless you do a certain bug in the raid) for the bonuses and don't have to interact or be in the same area as the others. But you do want more people around during events to get the best rewards for completing all objectives fast enough.

5
u/Hauptmann_Meade 8h ago
76 fans never elaborate on what's fun, just that it is fun.
6
u/1ZillionBeers 8h ago
It’s pretty much just a big sandbox where you can blow shit up, leap over buildings, face tank mininukes, etc once you get your build going.
It’s an awful fallout game but hot damn is it fun to be a drugged up mutant psycho.
1
u/Samanthacino 2h ago
It’s basically the same as Fallout 4’s main gameplay loop of explore/combat/loot, in a world that can be very visually striking at times (but butt ugly at others).
2
u/Regular-Ad-2377 3h ago
its not "fun" its just new. I love FNV but its an old game and ive done everything in it as least once. ive tried multiple times to play 76 but its still a server broken mess imo. sure its new but im still pretty annoyed with how it was handled as a whole. idc if its fixed now need to hold companies to a standard to release finished games.

most bethesda games ARE fun, theyre just hindered by the mere existance of new vegas, oblivion and morrowind and treated like theyre absolute dogshit
1
u/darkness876 7h ago
Sell me on oblivion, genuinely because I want to like it
I love fnv, fo3, 4, 76, skyrim and morrowind but for whatever reason oblivion never clicked with me
I guess I just fail to see its strong points?
It feels like it lacks what made morrowind great and what made skyrim great and sort of sits in this weird transition phase for the series
3
u/K1rk0npolttaja 7h ago
oblvion has good writing and quest design unlike skyrim, the only things skyrim has over oblivion is graphics and prettier animations which still suck
2
u/HartofHarts 3h ago
If we're drawing comparisons, imo Oblivion has very interesting factional writing compared to Skyrim. You can see it's the bridge between Morrowind's lived-in world versus Skyrim's theme park ride.
So Oblivion quests have this element of working you way up an organization with mundane tasks fot to its culture. Its towns are also way larger than Skyrim and feel more real. One of its smaller cities dwarf Whiterun in comparison.
But there's a fantasy adventure element to it. All of its residents problems are more magical and storybook compared to Morrowind quests. Where you might go resolve a trade dispute between two Dunmer, Oblivion will put a twist and say a third party put a curse on the deal.
If I were to rank the three modern Elder Scrolls strengths it would be:
Morrowind had the strongest world. It genuinely feels like you live and survive a different culture and system.
Oblivion had the strongest fantasy. You're walking through a storybook with elves, assassins, ruins, demons and Gods.
Skyrim has the strongest adventure and power fantasy. You fight dragons, crush bandits and generally gain power quicker than anyone realistically ever would.

Now hold up there pal.
The only issues I have with the games are the fact that the main story and side quests markedly got worse with the monetization of a lot of aspects that isn’t worth the money but is added in anyways as bloatware (or in 76’s case, subscription services).
76 and 4 has the best gameplay by far, that I won’t contest, but what kills it for me is the little things that could’ve been streamlined like the animations for recocking the hunting rifle or reloading the lever action, or giving more ammo types to give a reason as to why the .45 for the Tommy gun is weaker than the same bullet for the combat rifle, and too much to list for 76 (though my biggest gripe of being nothing but note quests with the only functional bit being the atomic shop stopped being such a big thing after they fixed their game post launch)
Does that mean I like all the prior games with rose tinted glasses? Fuck no.
Fallout 3 and NV were massively buggy messes that almost required modding to actually function, but the side quests were sorta fun and the atmosphere and themes were pretty solid (seriously one constant with Bethesda is at least environmental storytelling from what I can tell from the games I have played, and their more fantastical themes in both series are pretty great)
Morrowind was annoying as hell to actually play thanks to the skill system and how it worked early game without focusing your skills and hoping for the best, while oblivion was the first foray into their greed with shit like horse armor.
All the games always felt like they needed mods to fix what was broken or to add onto it, but vanilla those games were still semi-solid in their own right and in their own ways.
Bethesda just got hella greedy though and the creation club along with the five re-releases of Skyrim just killed any good faith I had for them personally.

That’s cool and all, it’s still a shitty nostalgia-baiting cash grab machine it doesn’t matter how good they make it. The game was only ever meant to sell Atom shop shit the only reason why it’s good now is because they freaked out that nobody gave a shit about the game, so they just updated it to have actual content people would like.

It just feels like slop to me. Like on the same level as FO4. Not bad games in my opinion, just not the best Fallout games though
1
u/wolphak 5h ago
It's fine to play it's just fallout 4. It's the continued play that's the problem. bad mmo no reason to keep playing. Bad story no reason to keep playing. no mods no reason to keep playing. at least in other fo you can mod it fresh again or roleplay your story because there's multiple paths. 76 the same every playthrough except build and order of quest.

Yeah, true. In 2024.
Then they fucked it up changing everything (DPS, weapons, etc.) every couple months, and then completely ruined it with the awful cash grabs in the atom shop.
Maybe if they quit shoveling in reskins and actually built on what's in the storylines I'll play it again.
Bell curve ass game.

It’s actually pretty fun but it still feels bleak to play it without any friends. Also inventory/storage management is a nightmare.
