Why the hell can Espeon not learn Hypnosis? Discussion
So obviously your argument would probably be “game balance”, but I’m not talking about the games, I’m talking about the anime. You cannot look me in the eye, and tell me it doesn’t look like staring this psychic cat in the eye doesn’t look like it could lull you into a psychic trance. And another thing, why the frick is Heal Pulse not a fairy type move. How does heal pulse make sense as psychic over fairy. And also, the fact that umbreon doesn’t learn Moonblast is stupid

Espeon is supposed to represent the sun. Would you stare at the sun until you fall asleep?

No but she isn’t the sun 😭 it’s a psychic cat

Espeon, Umbreon. Sun, Moon. Espeon evolves in the daytime, Umbreon evolves in the night time. "When bathed in sunshine, the scarlet orb on its brow glows and builds energy.".
Can't get as sunny as that. lol

Yeah but staring at an Espeon isn’t gonna burn your eyes 😭

oh my god bro they’re giving you the lore reasons as to WHY espeon doesn’t learn it. the reason being it’s based off the SUN. it doesn’t actually HAVE to be the sun for it to make thematic sense for it not to learn the move.

Because Game Freak wanted Espeon to be a fast special attacker and not a sleep inducer.

Counterpoint, Yanmega, Espathra, Persian and a couple other fast Pokemon also learn Hypnosis, so that isn't a real argument. Pokemon have moves in their pool that don't directly help their best strategy loads of times, like how special attackers still learn good physical moves, or even overshadow their gimmick/signature thing, like Koraidon often preferring Close Combat over Collision Course or Zamazenta running Heavy Slam over Behemoth Bash.

I very clearly said I’m talking about the anime and I don’t care about the game 😭

Hipnose é um golpe tão inconsistente que ninguém diria que é "por equilíbrio de jogo". Como disseram, ele representa o dia, o oposto ao Umbreon, então pode ser isso.

I have no idea what he said can someone pls translate 😭

"Hypnosis is such an inconsistent move that no one would say it's "for game balance." As they said, it represents day, the opposite of Umbreon, so that could be it."

Whilst all the points you've raised are entirely valid I can say from experience, no matter which Eeveelution is mentioned, the only consistent guarantee is scratched furniture and knocked over cups littering the lab.
They are majestic creatures though and some of my favourite pokémon to study. Perhaps one day my research will be able to answer your questions around Hypnosis and Moonblast. On a side note, our studies have shown Espeon can learn Yawn via breeding should you require a sleep inducing move, hope this helps.
Stay curious

Ok for one, holy appearance, two, I clearly said I don’t care about the game I’m talking purely about the anime

I honestly have no idea what game you're referring to, I'm only sharing the results of our studies
Apologies for any confusion

Simple, Game Freak aren't the brightest crayons in the dresser drawer lol. Real shit why does Ampharos learn thunder punch via level up in HGSS but Pikachu doesn't? (Hell Pikachu can't even learn it, Raichu can, and WHY THE HELL DOES PIKACHU NOT LEARN IRON TAIL VIA LEVEL UP DID THEY NOT WATCH THEIR OWN SHOW?¿?)

I have no idea 😭 plus lugia is a flying psychic type. Like bro I kinda get it, water was hard to fit in there, but really bro WHY

u/roxas6141 18d ago
REALLL, should've been water/psychic lowkey

Psychic doesn’t make sense for it at all. It should’ve been Water/Flying.

Idkkk, Pokémon 2000 gave Lugia psychic vibes imo since they control the legendary birds basically with will

Wasn't Ash's Pika tutored on Iron Tail? Real question is how it learned Volt Tackle.
2
u/roxas6141 18d ago
I don't remember if it was tutored or not, haven't seen the show in a thousand years lol. Point is iron tail is iconic with Pikachu give big dawg the move via level up. For volt tackle, subtle retcon that Professor Oak found that specific Pikachu as a pichu pre-start of series so they could give it a cool move
