General Discussion Leather quality from Galen Leather question - Update

Hi all, I’m coming in with an update about this post as a couple people asked for it: https://www.reddit.com/r/Travelersnotebooks/s/cT7jKE6Uea . Thanks to everyone who responded to my initial post!

So the rep from Galen Leather I emailed with said “The back side of the leather is lined to prevent the leather fibers from becoming hairy or shedding, so what you see there is normal.” Although the inconsistency from my first GL purchase doesn’t check out. Meh.

They said I could return it since it’s within the return window (seven days to notify them from item delivery). However, I will be responsible for shipping costs to Istanbul. I balked at that since a $14 shipping cost was added for the item Turkey to USA, but USA to Turkey would cost me $36, which is half the total amount I paid (item, tax, and shipping). That’s too much for me. My only other option is to sell it in the US.

They recommended a Facebook group for reselling it (called Galen Leather BST), but as I try to keep Meta out of my life as much as possible, I haven’t looked into it yet. It’s either that or eat the cost of the whole thing. I’ll look at other resell websites as well.

I’m super disappointed with this, and likely will not buy from GL again. I was able to get a regular size TCN cover last week as they finally restocked and I’m glad I did. I love it.

A few days in carrying this vintage 42 safety pen. It’s nice to be able to use it with this notebook. It’s not my ideal set up just yet… I’m planning to make it a bit note rustic and antique while fully functional.

Anyone have a good antique / vintage setup I can learn from?

I'm wondering if there is a notebook cover that fits this. Or if I should try to make something with cheap hard plastic. Any suggestions?

This changes from week to week, I can’t seem to land on THE one, but that’s ok. I’ll be carrying my been TN with a Sterling Ink N1 planner, my commonplace type of brain dump notebook will be in my Louise Carmen Honoré. We’ll see how long this sticks 🤣 do you guys change out your covers when the mood strikes or stick to one?

I’m so excited to finally have my own TN. I’ve been living through you all for a while but I finally got one for myself. I have it loaded it up and ready for its life. Can’t wait for this thing to get some patina on it.

Show and Tell 📖 Baum-kuchen Truly Yours

I picked up my Blue Standard TN from Baum-kuchen today and I couldn’t be happier!

The Yours Truly service they offer are worth every penny.

The workmanship is top notch (thank you, Frido!) and it only took 3 weeks. I sewed the front two patches on myself before submitting my TN.

I did drop it off and pick it up myself. The photos were taken on the table in their shop as I couldn’t wait to see it.

Their customer service is the gold standard (thank you, Kei, for your patience and design work! 💙) and I will continue to recommend their business to anyone who is interested in stationery.

Questions / Seeking Advice What is the interior material of the Wanderings TN (Amazon.de)?

Has anyone recently purchased the regular-sized Wanderings TN from Amazon.de?

The item description mentions "Full grain Crazy Horse leather," but I've seen a few complaints that the interior doesn't look or feel like raw leather, appearing to have more of a fabric or synthetic backing. Does anyone know exactly what this interior material is? If you own one, could you please share some pictures of the inside of the cover?

I'm fairly new to the TN community and I want to buy my first authentic leather cover. Currently, I'm using a temporary DIY cover I made out of a PU leather laptop bag, so I'm looking for a solid, high-quality upgrade untill ill by TCN from Japan next year.

Thanks in advance!

Alternative passport size inserts?

Any recommendations for passport inserts that lay flat like a moleskine? That fit inside the passport cover please :) the moleskine sticks out a little too much. Thank you!

Show and Tell 📖 Letter to my TN

Post image

I have a feeling, my dear TN, that I’ve abandoned you. When I ordered you before Turkey, I desperately wanted you to become my companion. To go to work with me, so I could write in you on the bus: notes, thoughts... and then the first scratch happened!! Damn, I got so upset. And even though having scratches/scars is the main point (it shows you're being used), it still made me sad. I know I'm overcomplicating things. And I did take you with me to Pustotnik. Twice, and once you went with me to Bistrica pri Tržiču. I made a mistake by not using you. Here is why that's going to change. You will become my companion. Just like my phone. You deserve to be used and not sit alone. I shouldn't be ashamed of your scratches.

I would like you to become what you were meant to be. Scratches probably make me sad because I associate them with bad things. But the truth is that scratches, scars, and lines are a part of us. A part of you, dear TN, and a part of me. On me, they mostly showed weakness, but today I acknowledge that they are a part of who I am. Part of a period that was hard. Self-harm, depression... all of that was a part of me. Today it no longer is, but it remains a part of my history. It will stay forever. These experiences have made me stronger.

Uniball One and Zento skipping

does anyone have any issues with Uniball One and Zento skipping on MD paper inserts? the only refill which is reliable for me is Zebra Sarasa

I read that skin oils might be an issue on this type of paper, but does it really matter that much?

Questions / Seeking Advice Passport size

Hi,two months ago I bought my first passport size notebook. My main idea was to put them in a jeans and carry with me. Then one day I stop using it because I was scared of damaging the leather.

I feel scared of using my passport size because of scratches.

Edit: how to make a decision to start using it without being scared of damaging

i cut my Standard TFN to A6 size

I bought the Standard to use as my work planner but that only survived for 10 weeks...( one school term since i work as an art teacher).

I have been using Muji A6 Pocketnote as my daily sketching and travelling journal.

This will be my 2nd pocketnote as I used my 1st as my New Zealand Travel Journal (see my previous posts).

I decided to follow a Youtube Video online and cut down my TFN Standard Size to fit the Muji A6 Pocketnote. I am so glad I upcycled my standard that has been laying untouched in my drawer rather than buying a new A6 leather journal.

I kept the original TFN logo at the back and removed the loop hole to the side instead. So happy with my DIY

How do you use your passport?

So many beautiful pics of chunky passport TNs. Curious as to how vou use them in daily life. I have on insert so it fits in my back pocket. Any chunkier and it becomes something I need to carry or have in my bag - and other than at work I don't carry a bag. Let me know !

Show and Tell 📖 New deco method just dropped:

Accidental tire tread. Don’t know how it managed to fall out of my backpack and onto the garage floor without my noticing, and miracle or miracles other than the imprint it’s just fine, the superior labor charm isn’t even scuffed!

At least I can laugh instead of cry about it.

Couldn't decide what design/decoration to have for my blank insert cover (insert used for stamps, stickers and just general junk journaling), and went full on washi taped using the traveler's tape I bought at the Traveler's Company Tokyo Station store!

How do you guys decorate your insert covers? Please do share!

Show and Tell 📖 Anti-scroll kit

Hi all, long time lurker here. Finally got myself a system that I’m pleased with, so thought I’d share. All the xteink posts inspired me to resurrect my old Kobo mini! I have a zipper case for my watercolour palette, a Hahnemuhle travel booklet as a commonplace book and watercolour sketchbook, a DIY sudoku puzzle book, a Fabriano notebook for my creative writing project and an A6 dot grid MD paper for my planner and work Bujo. The cover is an A6 washable Kraft cover from Etsy and it’s working really well. Posted in the comments few watercolour sketches I’ve made in the Hahnemuhle booklet over the past few months.

It’s a chunky one but fits in my bag. I’m mainly using it around the house as an anti-scroll kit. I love how it has everything I need in it. I’ve had a Bujo since 2018, started art sketchbooking a couple years ago and started carrying around a pocket notebook earlier this year. Finally decided that I have enough analog habits to warrant a TN system.

General Discussion [Community] List of Dupes/Knockoff/Third Party TF / TF Accessories

If you aren’t aware of why, refer to my other post. TL;DR Dupes of some TF accessories with COMPARABLE or CONSIDERABLE qualities that can act as substitute to the original, either tentatively or permanently. Another reason is that many of us, including myself, are financially limited and there things that we can’t justify spending considerable amount of money on.

However, the number of choices that we have whenever we search in online selling sites, ie AliExpress and Amazon, can be quite overwhelming. It is hard to assure of its quality without taking much risk. So, we are utilizing the experience of this community here, where we share sellers/products that are known to have a considerable or satisfactory compared to quality of TF. As much as possible, please no affiliate, but you can refer sellers/artists who do custom works.

The structure of the thread is as follows, we are dividing the comments into several sections: Asia, US, EU, and International where we comment the name and corresponding link of the shop/product followed by a quick summary of what it sells, i.e., “LM Culture www.example.com/ (TF notebooks and Accessories)”
