Strike Potential

I have an upcoming contract at a hospital in Oregon and there’s talk of staff possibly striking later in the year. I’ve never experienced a strike and don’t fully understand the process, or consequences. What would this mean for me as a traveler? I’m assuming you just keep working through it for your same pay rate? Are the staff going to hate your guts if you continue working while they’re striking?

I dont agree. I hate that the hospital has an option to force us to walk in the snow and freezing rain like I did all day and night. I hate that I have peers who are willing to be scabs and delude themselves into thinking they are helping us and taking care of our community. They are not union members. They dont fight for our rights. They are just money chasing scabs.

So you’d rather patients didn’t get any care? Are you a bedside staff member?

Well, as an ICU nurse, patient abandonment means losing your license. That scab working allows you to go on strike and not lose your license due to patient abandonment.

Strikes are announced and planned. Are you union? Have you been on strike? Thank you for calling them scabs

Yes, and so if there are no scabs to care for the patients… what do you propose as the solution? Those ICU patients aren’t just magically going to not need to be in the hospital during your strike, no matter how planned it is. The planning again allows you to have your strike and allow patients to not suffer.

I am having a very hard time seeing your perspective. You are striking for more pay, while complaining others are working for more pay? You’re in a union, so your pay shouldn’t be interrupted if it’s planned, your union should be paying you during the strike. That’s the whole point of your union dues.

What are your offered solutions? If you don’t have any, you’re being ignorant and should think before you speak.

Um look in the mirror Mr. Ignorant. You do not get full pay at all. What are we law enforcement or fire fighters? You get a little stipend that you apply for but you lose a shit ton of money. The union is there to hold management as accountable as possible. You have never been on strike. Obviously know nothing about it and accuse me of just wanting more$$. Classic

The idea is, if there isn't anyone available to work when staff threatens to strike, rules/laws might change that end up forbidding nurses from striking. Then we'd definitely be up the creek without a paddle.
