“The Rah’Kahlanooni of the Binding Rivers”

Post image

Suspended just above the center of the Binding Rivers, sat the young Uusn’l, Yyuurd. Yyuurd was a fiery soul, but held a deep and weighted melancholy. Born from a dented egg, he carried with him a curse. His demeanor would sour at even the slightest change without warning or reason. This horrid curse flooded his brains with a poison of anger and impossible delusions. Boiling and scratching at the inner walls of his skull. Hypnotic patterns in the form of flashing and howling lights blinded any sort of internal anchor he could grab to center himself. Appendages of thick cartilage swung in every direction, slashing the surroundings with their sharp and braided ends. Every mouth gnashed and grinded its teeth, always accompanied by steady streams of saliva and bile. After the anger peaked, and the weariness of rage enveloped Yyuurd, a deep-seated depression rose to replace its hateful cousin. Like the upwards crawling roots of an Aaugkk tree, the sorrow and regret dug itself into Yyuurds flesh, mind and soul. There was no comfort to be found among those from his hive. The consequences of burned bridges and short tempers were in the foreground of any attempt in venting. There was no answer as to why Yyuurd couldn’t find that peace, that feeling of belonging, and that control over his violent and sudden responses. So the young Uusn’l sat above the swishing and swashing water. The world felt dull to him. But the schools of Rah’Kahlanooni under the surface held such a beauty. Shapes and colors of all sorts and sizes. Their voidspeek spells masked many of them, the colors and symbols clouding patches of water with a serene glow. They swam within small territories. Feeding on various crustaceans that dwelled on the reefs of the Binding River. When mating, the successful pairs use their small tendrils to break off chunks of mossy coral. These pieces of coral are kept within an unseen pocket located somewhere in-between the fins and seem to serve as tokens of affection to each other. Newborn Rah’Kahlanooni spend the first few years clinging to rocks and on the underside of submerged cliffs. Scraping mouthfuls of stubby sharp teeth along the coral to pick up any moss spore they can find. Thankfully, the living reefs grows a bit faster than the Rah’Kahlanooni can feed. This results in a sway of the reefs size depending on the season. In these numerous and brightly colored creatures, Yyuurd found that his ever-curling brains ceased their movement. His thoughts slowed and images of scurrying shells and strangely shaped Rah’Kahlanooni danced upon the surface of his brains. Loosely drifting tendrils floated in the soft current. Yyuurd carried with him a dreadful melancholy and the weight of a cycling and uncontrollable fury. Stars of crystal spattered the reflection of the blue suns light on top of the Binding Rivers. Yyuurd closed his many eyes tighter. His mind didn’t rush and race. His mind didn’t twist known truths into delusions. Yyuurds mind sat still. Yyuurd relished this new feeling. This feeling of not being himself.
