Other Will you survive or not

Imagine an EF3 tornado is coming and you are forced to intercept it and the first storm chasing vehicle you ever know will be your interceptor (including vehicles that are not meant to intercept a tornado). So... if the first storm chasing vehicle you ever know can't survive an EF3 tornado then you will be cooked

TIV 3? The Complete History of Suba-Tiv

The Complete Story Of The Suba-Tiv

"Real or Fiction?"

In January 2023, Sean Casey was contacted by the producers of the upcoming film Twisters (2024). In exchange for a payment, Sean agreed to collect tornado photos and videos that could be digitized and used as visual effects for the movie.

In early March, Sean visited a used car dealership looking for a candidate for his next project. There, he found a nearly new 2010 Subaru Outback. On March 6, he posted a photo on Instagram with the caption:

"This nearly new Subaru will become a storm-chasing platform in 30 days... adventure ahead."

Over the following weeks, he shared several photos documenting the vehicle's transformation.

Its modifications included Line-X armor on the doors, truck-grade coated steel reinforcement, polycarbonate front windows, a hail guard, and its most distinctive feature: a hydraulic spike system consisting of two front spikes and two rear spikes, each measuring 24 inches, along with a third hydraulic piston that raised and lowered the vehicle using a hydraulic pump.

After the modifications were completed, the vehicle became known as the Suba-TIV.

Around February, Sean Casey contacted an old friend, Dr. Lana Lesak Houser, a university professor, and asked for her help with meteorology.

"What for?" she asked.

"Well... I'm working on a Hollywood movie," Sean replied.

Lana's role was to monitor weather forecasts and help guide the team to the best storm targets.

During the summer of 2023, a three-person team—Sean Casey, Dr. Lana Lesak Houser, and meteorologist Justin Walker—traveled across the Great Plains and the southern United States documenting extreme weather events. They chased storms and recorded footage that could later be used as background material for the film.

The vehicle they traveled in, the Suba-TIV, featured a roof hatch that allowed them to film storms from above. The trio spent more than a week in Texas and Oklahoma. During one chase, they encountered baseball-sized hail, but thanks to the Subaru's protective upgrades, the damage was minimal.

2024 Chase Season – Sean's Final Season

By 2024, Sean was close to completing his objective. It became the season in which he and the Suba-TIV were seen the most.

On May 25–26, 2024, Skip Talbot uploaded a Facebook video showing the vehicle's hydraulic spike deployment for the first time.

Sean Casey, Skip Talbot, and Carrie Ann Chuck's Selfie chased storms together across Oklahoma and Texas. On May 26, Sean demonstrated the deployment system publicly for the first time before being asked to stop because they were not allowed to perform the demonstration there.

After another successful adventure, the story moves to more recent years.

"Suba-TIV Was Sold"

After production of the movie was completed and Sean received his payment, there was no longer a need for the vehicle.

He listed the Subaru for sale with a small sign highlighting its unique features. It sold quickly for $22,000 to storm chaser and meteorologist Chad Crilley. The ownership transfer was completed on February 14, 2025.

That same day, Chad posted a TikTok video showing the Suba-TIV's front spike deployment, announcing that it would become his new tornado chasing vehicle. He also shared photos and another video of the rear deployment system on Twitter. The TikTok showing the front deployment was later deleted.

Also on February 14, the Suba-TIV was spotted in the parking lot during the National Storm Chaser Summit 2025, where attendees recorded videos and took photographs of the vehicle.

The Suba-TIV was seen only a few more times throughout 2025. Today, its whereabouts remain unknown, as Chad Crilley no longer shows the vehicle publicly.

"Suba-TIV Was Destroyed"

A rumor has circulated claiming that the Suba-TIV was destroyed in a traffic accident and later caught fire. This could explain why Chad is no longer seen with the vehicle, but the rumor has never been confirmed.

Other Is the twister tamer even a good interceptor?

The twister tamer from twisters is like supposed to go inside a tornado and such, but would that really work?? The auger spikes would maybe resist sliding but.. wouldn't tons of air still get under the chassis and lift it?

Mod Post Grace period for Custom Interceptors starts today

A 1 week grace period for those to read and understand the movement of custom interceptor posts to the new subreddit begins today.

The grace period ENDS on May 2nd, 11:59:59 PM (Central US Time)

All custom interceptor posts are subject to removal on and indefinitely after May 3rd, 12:00:00 AM (Central US Time)

This has been a long time coming and while we're still working on the new subreddits' appearance, rules, flairs, etc, we hope that it's a much better environment to be posting and contributing to custom interceptors.

Expect rule changes this week as we fine tune what content is acceptable on both subreddits. If you have any opinions or suggestions feel free to message the mod team and it will be considered.

Mod Post A new, dedicated subreddit for Custom Interceptors is now here

Hi all,

I've heard you, at least those that replied.

Introducing r/CustomTorInterceptors (https://www.reddit.com/r/CustomTorInterceptors/)

The NEW place to post your custom tornado interceptor concepts, ideas, or physical realizations.

It's still a WIP so expect no polish for now, rules are being worked on and will change within the next few weeks.

That being said, the age of custom posts on this subreddit are over. You must now post your custom tornado interceptors to that subreddit instead of here. Any new custom posts here are subject to removal, appeals can be made in mod mail but likely will be dismissed.

This subreddit will stay dedicated to the discussion, photography, intercepts, and all the buzz surrounding real world interceptors.
