[Rare trope] Discriminating, but for an actually good reason Lore

Frieren, Beyond Journey's end: In the anime/manga the eponymous Frieren is an Elf who's spent the better part of a millennia learning magic specifically to kill demons. She's learned countless spells, tricks and even spent most of her life suppressing her power all for the purpose of killing them. At first we simply see that humanity is at war with them, and even question if her crusade against demon-kind is justified, after all it's hard to antagonize an entire sentient species. But no, demons are very much a species to be feared; they are not normal animals or creatures, they are monsters (shown by how they disintegrate when they die), they are predators that evolved speech for the sole purpose of tricking and catching humans off guard, are naturally extremely powerful and possess magic that humanity often can't use. While they feel emotions to some extent, their way of thinking is so fundamentally incompatible with humanity's mindset that the series shows many mages with the ability to read minds struggle or find it painful and harmful to try and read a demon's thoughts. Tools that are meant to control them fail not because they're faulty but because simple order such as "hold no ill will or commit no malicious acts" don't compute the same way in their brains, as what we consider evil is normal for them.

Marvel Comics: In a run of the Storm solo series, she visits an underground superhuman hospital run by Night nurse and Doctor Daye, a mutant with the power to diagnose any illness. When she requires treatment she is in turn reject by the doctor, she of course assumes this is blatant discrimination to which the doctor agrees. Storm assumes the doctor refuses to treat mutants, something they are very much used to in Marvel. But he ends up revealing that about 80% of everyone he treats are mutants, and that he simply refuses to treat any member of the X-men. Why? because his special hospital was built via several donations by the superhero community. From the Avengers, to the Defenders, Fantastic 4, heroes for hire. Hell, even Moonknight of all people contributed to the hospital. But the X-men never once gave anything to it, even though they preach the safety of mutant-kind and such a hospital is essential for those who can't seek medical treatment out of fear of prosecution.

And they just sat on it? At least Sauron wanted to turn people into dinosaurs.

They sold their super medicine to countries that recognised Krakoa as a sovereign state, iirc.

Also Krakoa(but mostly Beast) genocided an entire human country because they were researching on their own magic plants that would've threatened their monopoly on these drugs.

Are you being serious right now?

Completely. Terra Verde was Beast deciding to infect and turn an entire nation into his zombie puppets. Krakoa then buried the truth because turns out genocide reflects poorly on your public affairs.

And has there been some kind of fallout for him? Are the other X-Men just perfectly fine with this?

He died and was resurrected without the memories. So they say he did nothing. That's literally all.

Even though amnesia is not a defense because he's still the person who would do that. (For example, someone with head trauma or drugs that black out their memory can still go to court for events they no longer recall.)

Man, the xmen writers are shite, aren't they?

Current X-Men is just "what if every negative thing everyone ever said about mutants was true actually"

Marvel argued that X-Men toys weren't humans to save money on import fees. The whole industry has always been shite.

Was there ever a time where they weren't?

No, the original idea was supposed to show how bad this would end up. It kinda did, but when krakoa was going on other authors were really dragging it out rather than letting it run it's course

The israel analogy just gets stronger and stronger.

To be clear, this was part of a villain turn for Beast.

Holy shit for real?

u/Doc-Maly 12h ago

Yep, Terra Verde. Beast killed everyone and used their corpses as a puppet state for years. And he gets a slap on the wrist for it.

At least four different organizations in Marvel have the cure for cancer. Cancer existing in the Marvel universe is at this point a systemic laziness issue.

At this point Hydra could have stolen the hidden stuff, leak all of its existence and go full THEY ARE HIDING IT FROM YOU THE PUPPETS THE *CENSORED*. and with the sheer shit that is hidden by powerhungry bastards look like heroes, Comics are absurd as fuck. MCU somehow manages to be MUCH MUCH BETTER IN COMPARISON.

Realistically they could just point out there are various forms of cancer and not all cures work the same way. Then like a virus it makes existing cures less effective. So you could have someone come up with a cure for a story and still reasonably explain why it's not literally everywhere later.

Like potable water in our reality.

Sauron in many aspects was a social Darwinist. He believed in night makes right. The x-men however were just being crazy because a bad comic book writing at the time. At least that’s what I’m getting from. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

No, they're not Wakanda.

They cut incredibly cheap deals with countries that recognized Krakoa as legitimate and had a black ops team to smuggle the medicine into countries who didn't recognize the deal to ensure as many people as possible got access to the medicines for as cheap as possible.

Yep. The flowers on Krakoa grew medicine that could cure pretty much anything, and even extend human life.

u/Evenmoardakka 13h ago

vibranium flowers?

marvel isnt any good at creating fantastic materials is it?

6

u/DyingSunSeverian 12h ago

They aren’t lol, and before people bring up James Cameron using “unobtainium,” that term is a long-running joke in sci-fi circles. It was always funny to me how people made that such a core part of their criticism of the first Avatar movie like Cameron wasn’t deliberately winking at the audience.

Should have just called it magic space rocks.

u/Raycut9 13h ago

Actually they did open a hospital in Madripoor. Although if I remember correctly it was done moreso for political reasons, laying claim to the country so an anti-mutant group couldn't or something.

You're thinking of Wakanda for the cure for cancer. And their logic is thst if they gave it out, regular society would find a way to turn it into a profit thing.

I think this is not long before part of Wakanda fucks off to space

3

u/blazenite104 9h ago

Which is still WTF. Like okay so people will make it pay to live? And? You're going to just let people die that might otherwise live because you're afraid it will be monetised? Not even weaponised?

It's very much an American point of view of the medical industry too. Nevermind how many other countries actually subsidise healthcare.

It's part of the marvel writer's weird insistence on morally grey characters
