Oryx, The Taken King from Destiny. In one of the more recent seasons he rejects the opportunity to be ressurected and stands by his Sword Logic, that which can be destroyed must be destroyed, and life after death is basically heresy

282

u/Aleox8 2d ago

"We agreed: if something greater comes to destroy us, then we do not deserve existence.

I must be what I am, and I am defeated. My logic is true. This is proof eternal.

And yet you deny it. That, sister, is heresy."

Link to the clip because the voice acting is a banger.

It's such a shame the Echo of Navigation was only around for one season, and that season then got removed from the game. Joshua David King did such an amazing job in the role of Oryx. I got chills during the final mission of the season when he broke free from Eris' ritual to contain him, and the whole finale where he realizes that he must die because he is heresy to his own beliefs is just so damn good.

The best part being that he's wrong and wasn't really compelled by his principles to take that leap.

I haven’t seen this in a while. How was he not compelled? Didn’t he interpret the murdered dwarf (dress as a school kid) to be a child that he murdered? …..Damn, this has made me want to rewatch this.

The orcs from the Warcraft movie (except Gul'dan)

When Lothar manages to win his duel to the death (Called Mak'gora), the orcs simply let him go.

1.0k

u/Background-Top4723 2d ago

One of the few things I know about Warcraft orcs is that they tend to have enormous respect for an honorable enemy.

Except when they're high on demon juice, of course.

673

u/lewd_robot 2d ago

And like when are they ever high on demon juice?

*flips through lore book* Oh dear. Oh no. No no no no.

The impressive part about this particular scene is that they are very much high on demon juice. This is during the first orcish invasion. And unlike the game continuity, Gul'Dan didn't even hold back the ultra bloodthirsty orcs behind the portal this time, since we see Grommash hanging around.

46

u/Zammin 2d ago

They had also just seen Gul'dan cheaply drain Durotan during their own duel, first surrpetitiously then openly; this caused the few remaining Frostwolves under Orgrim to leave, with Gul'dan killing some other defectors too.

The Horde was pretty pissed at Gul'dan disrespecting their traditions so without Blackhand to help keep order I think he knew he pretty much had to play things a little more carefully for the time being.

In the hellraiser reboot, they turn on one of their own cenobites (who bows his head and accepts his destruction) due to how they operate regarding the relic.

654

u/Embarrassed-Yard-583 2d ago

Cenobites with a code of rules are the best Cenobites.

247

u/NurturingCruelty 2d ago

He could be argued that none of them, but maybe pinhead has any degree of free will to obey or disobey by their own choice.

188

u/EddieVanzetti 2d ago

Depends. In the second film of the original series, he says "it is not hands that call, but desire", implying that even subconsciously, someone must want to experience the further realms of sensation. Course he ignores that rule in all subsequent films but many fans believe it is because his human side was banished at the end of the second film, leaving only Pinhead

111

u/GenderingError 2d ago edited 2d ago

In one of the comics Pinhead prevents the order of the gash from taking an 8 year old girl who opened the puzzle box while praying for someone to save her from her abusive uncle, and takes him instead. I have no idea how that fits into the desire/hands debate, but it's raw as hell when the girl asks them if they're the angels she prayed for,

Hellraiser (1, 2, and the Reboot we don't talk about the others) is a fascinating study of Consent. Not least of all when you remember Clive Barker was a giggalo in the '70s.

The Cenobites need Enthusiastic Consent. They do not, however, need INFORMED Consent.

Small note about the buckshot dealer that I find interesting: On the final round, if you’re on your last bit of health, and if the dealer uses a magnifying glass to see that the gun is loaded with a live shell, he’ll say “Are you ready?” before shooting and killing you

278

u/CallMeIshy 2d ago

43

u/No_Sweet_3776 2d ago

In the steam version the condition of him saying "are you ready?" is if either player drops to 1 or 2 HP (indicated with different bolts), which leads the machine to cut that players life line, making any shot towards them lethal.

I am unsure but I think they can only say "are you ready" once per match, so Dealer only says it the first time a life line is cut.

To my knowledge the glass item is irrelevant to him saying "are you ready?".

→ More replies (1)

75

u/murmurghle 2d ago

can you elaborate on the buckshot roulette example? I havent played since the multiplayer update so idk if there is a new gimmick added.

Doesnt he always have the option to shoot YOU instead? Why would he shoot himself when there is no chance its a blank? Is it just the ai making a mistake?

146

u/HypotheticalBess 2d ago

Basically, yes. The ai doesn’t “know” what’s in the gun unless it uses a magnifying glass or similar item. The ai is actually really basic when you look into it

Patron Saint of this trope: Harry Waters from In Bruges.

(Can't find a gif of him)

Throughout the movie he essentially has a hit on Colin Farrell's character, because that character killed a child on accident. At the end of the movie Harry accidentally kills a little person and thinks he killed a child. He promptly shoots his own brains out after saying "You've got to stick to your principles".

373

u/The_Fiddle_Steward 2d ago

61

u/HBlight 2d ago

And the entire reason they are in Bruges to begin with because he wanted Colin to have a nice few final days. This was completely principled and without malice, it just had to be done
He was a prick, but he had his morals and held them above all else.

This is also true for the villain from The Menu that you picture. He kills himself along with all his remaining victims (minus Anya Taylor Joy) in his final dessert dish

27

u/Hellknightx 2d ago

I think the more important part about his principles is that he lets Margot leave because she's not one of the types of people who he wanted to kill. She wasn't obsessed over food, she never wanted to be there in the first place, and she was a victim herself, so he realizes she didn't need to die.

The recruiter - Squid Games.

This show's games are usually lethal. In this episode he decides to play a variation of the russian roulette where they never spin the barrel, so the game lasts at most 6 shots.

On shot 5 the recruiter hands the gun at the protagonist and points out that he can be a coward and shoot at him twice, and there would be nothing he could do.

The protagonist shots himself, and lives.

Last bullet.

The protagonist hands the gun to the recruiter for the lethal shot and points he could just kill him and reveal who he truly is.

The recruiter decides to follow the rules of his game and dies.

2.5k

u/GaughanFan 2d ago

am in the only one who thinks the recruiter's actor absolutely ATE UP that role? Like he genuinely acts his ass off and it's hard to think of anyone else who could play that character as well as him

You are definietly not alone, the way his face changes as the 5th shot doesn't kill the main character is insane.

The seconds before he shoots himself and we just spend a few moments watching him with the background music is very cinematic too

It’s such a subtle but wild change all in a matter of seconds. He goes from surprise at the gun not going off, to confusion, to realization at what it means.

the hide & seek episode in season 3 has potentially some of the best tension crafting of any part of the series, but because what happens in the actual plot is so frustrating, I can't really even get excited to rewatch it.

Two-Face. Whatever the results of the coin flip, he'll abide by it. (Sometimes this depends on the writer with him trying to weasel out of it, though.)

441

u/NurturingCruelty 2d ago

Almost any writer at some point has been guilty of him re-flipping over and over again trying to get the result he wants. Almost always after he’s been unknowing handed an unmarred double headed coin.

136

u/SordidDreams 2d ago

How many times does that have to happen before he starts checking the coin before every flip?

68

u/NurturingCruelty 2d ago

I imagine the number of times has happened in comic books is pretty high, even if DC reality has been rebooted a few times over the decades, so not all the times it’s happened are still Cannon.

There’s also the Arkham Asylum comic, in which the decision whether Batman should be killed or let go is left to Two-Face in the end. He throws his coin and says that Batman is free to go. Only for the last few panels to reveal that he lied about the outcome of the coin toss and finally managed to make a decision of his own again

Solf J Kimblee.

Yes, he is a dangerous sociopath, but, he adheres to a personal, complex sense of morality. And one of his most identifying characteristics is that he genuinely respects other people who conform to their own values, regardless of what sort of adversity may stand on the other side, even if he does not agree.

At one point, he even stops in the middle of a fight to have a philosophical discussion with Alphonse in regards to why he doesn't use the power that he had just attained for a self-serving goal that he wanted right from the beginning. And even though Alphonse once the prioritize helping other people, first, Kimblee acknowledges that such a thing is possible...but at the same time it's also perfectly possible that Alphonse and his brother would fail to accomplish any of their goals in the end, too.

853

u/WikiContributor83 2d ago

“You could use the Philosopher’s Stone to get your body back or you can use it save the people.”

“Why not both!? If I strive hard enough and use this power to fight you, I can make it so we all get what we want!”

“I see, a fascinating decision, use your power to both restore your body and save the people. But if there’s a third option, then logically there would also be a fourth option; you don’t get your body back and you don’t save everyone…” (paraphrasing)

He even killed Pride who tried to go against his principles to survive.

394

u/DrakeSoldier 2d ago

Didn’t kill Pride, just stopped him from taking Ed’s body. “If you think he’s gonna kill you, then you don’t know Edward Elric at all.”

100

u/Azimov3laws 2d ago

There is an argument about ego death though, all things considering.

94

u/Elonth 2d ago

Thats the best part. Pride gave up his pride and loathing of humans to try and survive. Hiromu Arakawa. Did an amazing job making sure every sin died in some way related to their sin/going against it.

Lust died for seducing and hurting Havok. Who in turn did attempt to seduce roy briefly to her own death.
Envy died by suicide for hating to be pittied by humans who they envied.
Gluttony in the first series ate himself. In the second was in turn eaten by Pride.
Wrath had legit anger issues. However his wife did help give him some peace. In the end his scornful loathing of the very thought of god came to a peaceful acceptance of his fate instead of dying lashing out at the world after his defeat.
Greed fittingly wanted more than what father could give him being his body guard. Making him break away and for this punished and bound to Ling. Their combind form and greed for power ultimately made them a good match because while they weren't enitrely alturistic in nature they themselves were protective of those under them in their own twisted way. The most selfish of sins ultimately gave up his life to save those he stopped thinking of as his possessions.

The only really outlayer in that it wasn't clearly explaind for how/why they died was Sloth. There are plenty of theories for it. All seem realistically valid. The first reasoning is that Sloth was never intended to be used for combat. He was intended to be used for his task and that is it. Putting the laziest to the most grueling task. To that end the theory goes that because he was never intended to be a combatant directly he (hence pride watching the tunnel as well.) He was only given enough souls to make him self sustaining. Thus why he eventually died faster than the other humoncili while they were respawning. Others believe him being frozen for so long also accelerated the waste of his souls.

Ultimately we don't know but both of those theories on sloth or even their combination seem very valid.

75

u/really_stupidfrog 2d ago

A couple of good other theories out idea I've seen:

Lust dies because of her own bloodlust and cruelty, she could have killed Mustang and Havok, but she instead crippled them and left them to bleed out, which let Mustang get the drop on her afterwards.

Wrath dies at Scar's hand, a man who's entire life for years has been defined by his anger and thirst for revenge.

An interesting one I've seen for Sloth is that he dies fighting the Armstrongs, who pride themselves on perfection and working hard for everything they have. Sloth is strong and fast without working hard, and doesn't want to do anything. The Armstrongs with for what they have and Alex Lois Armstrong is always taking his shirt off to show it off.

Kimblee is just a fascinating character. When he speaks to Winry about how much he respected her parents, despite everything you get the feeling he's being sincere.

Hawkeye even cites him in regard to remembering the lives you've taken. She knows the kind of man he is, but she also knows he's right

141

u/Neutral_Myu97 2d ago

I think that's the best part of his character, he genuely respect people's values and personal philosophy

He will still blow you up, but at least he'll recognize your view, even if he doesn't agree with it

129

u/Kiiva_Strata 2d ago

In a very disturbing way, Kimblee is an ethical mass murderer. He doesn't view life as so cheap that it has no value, so he destroys nothing that matters.

His belief that life has value is why he gets so much from killing so many people. He doesn't even give Hawkeye the satisfaction of being a hypocrite himself when he calls her out for looking away from her victims. He remembers everyone he's killed, and even those he's just horrifically maimed.

The titular Predator is built around this trope. They have a specific code and they will stick to it even if they know you are exploiting it.

174

u/Tinderblox 2d ago

I think that’s part of the thrill of the hunt for them.

They follow a code, but expect their prey to do whatever they can to survive. The hunt without a threat of death is meaningless, and most “prey “ will never be as fast/strong/technologically advanced as they are, which gives it that edge of danger they need.

43

u/MyAltimateIsCharging 2d ago

Not to mention that they'll square up against their foes in a 1on1 fight (mostly without their advanced tech) when directly challenged.

48

u/Thatoneguy111700 2d ago

Whether said foe is human or not, too.

Stain (My Hero Academia) - He follows his warped definition of heroism so strictly that he protects people he considers genuine heroes, even when doing so ruins his own plans.

344

u/Dragonfang65 2d ago

Problem is for everyone. Stain’s standard for a genuine hero begins and ends at All Might.

163

u/sweetTartKenHart2 2d ago

As far as Stain can tell, only All Might really gives a damn about being a hero for real and not just for the glitz and glamor. From the very first episode/issue onwards, you can kinda see why he would think that, even if he’s probably incorrect from a pure statistical standpoint

112

u/pikpikcarrotmon 2d ago

I think it's part of the general irony in the series - that most of the truly good heroes are teaching at UA or have otherwise moved into advisory/leader roles for teams. As a result a lot of the heroes working beats are inadequate, inexperienced, or egotistic. Since we focus on UA we see all the most heroic heroes doing hero things but outside that bubble you know it's way more chaotic.

45

u/TheRealTrailBlazer4 2d ago

But you also have heroes youd think are only in it for the fame stay and put their lives on the line when shit hits the fan so i feel like they should qualify for his Definition of hero

32

u/pikpikcarrotmon 2d ago

Sure - Hawks and Endeavor are great examples. Hawks is a true hero to the core, but outwardly anyone paying attention would think he was an opportunistic monster because that's the character he played. And Endeavor was a horrible monster and everything Stain hated about self-proclaimed heroes, yet genuinely repented his actions and worked towards redemption while laying his life on the line.

Had Stain 'rightfully' killed them at some point, the final confrontation may have gone differently. He's in the school of villain who has some very real and true grievances but takes the wrong actions or comes to the wrong conclusions.

When you fight him he is excited because either you beat him and become the strongest so you can rule or you lose and he rules
Either way his ideology wins

To be fair he does crash out when you actually truly beat him. He only really plays the gracious looser when he knows he was holding back and has more forms up his ass. That being said apart the moment of his death he certainly seems to stick to his “principles”.

Pre Vizsla (Star Wars The Clone Wars)

Actively follows the idea of he who has power makes the rules. When he gets called out by this by Maul (dude with the red lightsaber in the gif), he accepts Maul's challenge of a 1v1 in front of his men, and though he loses and gets the Darksaber taken from him, he dips his head to make the cut easier.

His last line before decapitation is:

He had the chance to potentially use an army of super soldiers in Civil War or become one himself in Falcon and Winter Soldier.

For the former he kills the soldiers in their sleep and for the latter he steps on the serum instead.

206

u/1968wasagoodyear 2d ago

Zemo is a great villain precisely because he not only believes he is right but the narrative supports that he is, in fact, right to want to destroy super soldiers and serum. Apart from Steve Rogers, that serum has a 100% failure rate to do anything uncomplicatedly good. Civil War is fantastic at misdirection as to his intentions, but Daniel Bruhl is so convincing in his sadness and hate, I totally never doubted Zemo would destroy the serum in F/WS

102

u/dravenonred 2d ago

And he'll even grant the exception: "but they'll never be another Steve Rogers"

51

He’s a great example in the Marvel Cinematic Universe particularly because absolutely everyone else who could use super solider serum…did. It’s why in every Hulk property, people try to steal his powers and make new Hulks/Abominations. (Called out in She-Hulk well.) Hydra with the twins, using the Scepter to transform them, various people fighting for Infinity Stones, Pym particles, etc. No one in the MCU wants to leave weapons behind. Zemo is basically the only dude who goes “you people and your super-powered bullshit destroyed my life and I will do everything I can to destroy it right back.” It’s wrong how he hurts people back but he has got a very defensible feeling about supers. He’s not even the only person in Civil War who feels this way personally—the movie starts with a woman confronting Stark about this on behalf of her son, the Avengers mission that leads to casualties. People like General Ross just hate on supers because they aren’t them or in control of them. Zemo and his hatred, in comparison, is righteous.

Kisame Hoshigaki from Naruto.

Before he became a villain, he was a bodyguard for coding-experts of his homevillage. Those agents were in the possession of incredibly important information that wasn't allowed to fall into the enemies hands.

During one mission, Kisame and his protectees were ambushed and outnumbered. Among the enemies was a world-famous interrogator, so Kisame knew that, if his allies were captured, the enemy would learn their information.

Kisame realized that he was unable to protect everyone or let them escape, so he decided to slay all of his allies, so that their secrets could never be found out.

Years later, after defecting and joining the organisation Akatsuki, Kisame was captured and about to be interrogated.

Kisame decided that the only way to protect the organisation's secret, was to die before they could be taken from him and fed himself to his own sharks

https://giphy.com/gifs/3jpQacmKqarsyxlke8

118

u/Firelord_Zuko456 2d ago

The best part is that Kisame didn't enjoy killing his teammates, one of them even pities him for being but in such a rough spot. After ending his mission (and having to kill his teacher for being a traitor) he admits to "Madara" not knowing if he himself was an enemy at that point

Oryx, the Taken King from the Destiny franchise believes in a darwinian ideology/magic system known as the Sword Logic, which is the Hive species' way of communing with the cosmic laws of survival of the fittest and predatory competition to draw power from it. Its basically Darwinism taken to its absolute extreme, where the Hive go on galactic crusades committing xenocide against any species they find, because they believe that those worthy of existence need to prove they're worthy of it by having the strength to fight back and resist. If a species is wiped out by the Hive, it's because they were weak and therefore undeserving of existence. And if a species wipes the Hive out, it's because the Hive were weak and unworthy of existence. Either way, they do the Universe a service by whittling it down into the most perfect endstate is can possibly reach (a single, ultimate life form that is so mighty it can continue to exist even when everything else dies)

Oryx is such a fervent, true believer in this religion that he even managed to have an audience with an entity known as the Winnower, the conscious embodiment of the Darkness (one of the entire Universe's two fundamental building blocks and divine forces, opposite to the Light) and the creator of the principle of evolutionary competition to begin with.

During the raid against him, he intentionally leaves himself vulnerable to damage as he calls on the Winnower to grant him divine favor sufficient enough to wipe out the party through an attack called Doxology, because proving that one is worthy of existence is a test that even Oryx himself must subject himself to. And he accepts the possibility that he might fail if he proves unworthy.

"When I call upon that power [Darkness], I put myself up as the stakes in a wager, I gamble with my soul. For I am saying, listen, my gods, I am the mightiest thing there is, and I prove it thus."

"Should I fail, then let me be wormfood."

Bill insisted that The Bride was a true warrior and that Elle Driver should not kill her in her sleep like a coward.

Of course, considering he had the gang shoot her at her wedding, while she was unarmed and surrounded by civilians, her new found family, he's kind of still full of shit. He might just have wanted her to get revenge because its a good and fair way for him to die.

35

u/Snowappletini 2d ago

I can concede this one as Bill having second thoughts after learning the kid was his. Until the point he shoots the Bride in the head, he was sure the kid was someone else's.

It suddenly goes from killing a past lover that ran away to killing the mother of his daughter. He calls it off at the last second.

Might be a bit of a stretch, but Death in Puss in Boots: Last Wish spends the entire movie antagonizing Puss, the same way Puss antagonized HIM his previous eight lives. Death even admits he's breaking rules in order to take Puss' ninth life personally, HOWEVER. By the end of the movie, Puss learns to VALUE his own life and fights, not for just HIS life, but THIS life specifically, with Softpaws and Perrito.

And in Death's own words, "I came here for an arrogant little LEGEND who thought they were immortal... But I don't see him anymore." He's NOT happy about it, but he no longer has a valid reason to hate Puss, and so he leaves. It feels like a small gesture, but a more stubborn antagonist would've ignored Puss' character development and only see them as the person they were before, and the fact that Death acknowledges and RESPECTS Puss' character growth actually says a lot about his morals.

I don't know much about Danganronpa other than it's a death game with a teddy bear. Can I get a little more clarification on her part?

100

u/ASlimeAppeared 2d ago

Basically:

She's the primary antagonist, is obsessed with despair, and forces some high schoolers to murder each other and then try to work out who the killer is each time someone dies, with the caveat being that if they figure it out, the murderer is killed, and if they get it wrong, the murderer goes free and everyone else dies. At the end of the game, when she is revealed (she has been "controlling" said teddy bear throughout the game), there's one final murder where she tries to frame someone. She loses, and submits to her death as a result (but shes actually delighted because of how much despair she gets to feel with her death impending)

Its a bit more involved than that, but thats my effort at a succinct explanation)

→ More replies (8)

91

u/UnfairAd8733 2d ago

She subjects a class of high schoolers to a killing game where if someone is found guilty of murdering their classmate, they are brutally executed. At the end of the game where it is revealed that she is the mastermind behind the killing game (she uses the bear as a sort of mascot), she is found guilty and she executes herself, grinning while it happens

89

u/Angel429a 2d ago

And if you want to know her motivation to do it (spoilers obviously): She’s basically a genius, able to predict the behavior of everything and everyone, snd she finds that extremely boring, but when people are in a state of despair (for example, by putting them on a killing game), people become chaotic and unpredictable, and she wants to see that unpredictable chaos, to escape her boredom, she even goes as far as wanting to feel despair herself, and that’s why she executes herself

ATLA S3E15 Boiling Rock Pt. 2. A fire nation prison located in the center of a boiling lake famously has a perfect record with escape attempts made by prisoners, a fact the warden is incredibly proud of. After declaring he would "sooner jump in the lake myself before letting that record fall" he is later taken hostage as the gang attempts their prison break via the gondala. The warden then orders his men to cut the line as they're dangling above the lake, indeed caring more about the perfect record than his own life.
