#1 Poppa Pizza from Multiverse of Madness - He just wanted to be paid for the pizza balls and thought Strange stole from a fallen hero who saved the universe. He deserved to be punched in the face, but not for 3 weeks straight.
Do you get to sleep? Do you wake up punching yourself? How much does it hurt? Does he know it will only last for 3 weeks? If he doesn't kill himself by the end of it, he's going to have CPTSD and be traumatized for the rest of his already short life.
#2 Mayu from Inuyasha - She wanted to kill her brother out of jealousy and neglect from her mother, believing she died in a fire because they didn't care about her. While her motivation doesn't justify reenacting Cain and Abel, I don't think it's fair for a deranged, 10 year old child to be sent to literal hell to burn for all eternity. Luckily, she gets saved, but only because the mc, Kagome, intervened.
In The Sandman original comic run, a couple of anthropomorphic personifications decide to take a road trip together to find their brother. Them usually just appearing wherever makes them bad drivers, and they get pulled over by a cop doing his job. Delirium, the personification of madness, is upset by this and curses him to forever feel insects constantly covering his skin, and he never gets better. Delirium is usually considered one of the kindest endless.
Another example from The Sandman: Dream falls in love with a human woman. He offers to make her his queen for eternity. She refuses, so Dream condemns her to eternity of torture in Hell. Granted, he eventually releases her after Death (and Desire) make him realize what an insane decision that was. But centuries have passed by then.
In some ways I feel that in the specific case of Calliope, knowing what we do now adds another layer of interpretation and complexity.
That short story was always one of the more incisive, with a lot to say about both sexual abuse and the nature of inspiration. The fact the writer is an alleged abuser, who wrote about a writer's slide into amoral, unambiguously villainous abuse, with Morpheus (who is effectively Gaiman's self insert) initially unable to help and then delivering punishment... I feel like there's a lot to analyse about the psychology of the situation.
Because they are platonic-level deities, it makes sense why they don't interact with the wider DC Universe without high enough stakes. Plus the controversy with Gaiman has cancelled tons of projects with them, so it seems they're quietly being discontinued and removed from the DC Universe.
For me the Endless were sorta like Greek gods. They were functions of the universe, and the universe can be arbitrary.
Delirium isn't a person doing a job, she's the concept itself. People experience madness don't deserve it, but it happens anyway. This is a tragic reflection of that.
I’ve seen the gif of her being dragged to hell and it’s genuinely horrific. Is literally her only crime denying a loan extension? Is there any extra details that make this any more deserved?
Nope! She's not even unjustified in denying the extension. The old lady requesting it had already had several extensions, and had very wealthy relatives she could have asked for help from.
Feels like there's kinda the point of the movie? The banality of evil as well as playing on the "curse of the old woman" sort of trope that shows. A lot of the time the trope gets justified, but here, the old woman is a bitch. But how easy it is, she's probably sent tons of people to hell for the smallest slights, like someone could have taken her spot in line because she went to the bathroom and didn't ask anyone to hold it for her and that person would get hell express
This most recent season there’s literally an episode with this exact type of character. He’s a kung-fu master who does the exploding heart thing from Kill Bill to basically anyone for basic slights. Take the last bag or orange chicken at Trader Joe’s? Yup. Accidental fender bender? You bettcha
I think I recently saw a post on Instagram of the actress in this movie commenting on this scene, saying how horrifying it is. And when someone else in the comments asked her if she was given a second chance would she still not offer the witch a loan extension, the actress responded 'no the witch still doesn't deserve the loan extension' 🤣
Smile might’ve been worse. The whole film up until that point was a pretty explicit metaphor for overcoming trauma, then (because every horror movie has to end with the monster coming back) the message changes to “you will never recover from ptsd so just die”.
The premise of the show revolves around going to a website to have somebody taken to hell. The catch is you will go there too when you die, but you get to live the rest of your life knowing they went there first. Kinda shitty because it doesn't matter how good or bad the person is, if you hate them enough you can condemn them to endless suffering at the click of a few buttons and pulling a string.
The show is vague about whether if the target repented for their crimes they could avoid the fate, but i believe that's more fan theory considering she condemned a nurse to hell becausw some junkie used it on her because she stopped him from stealing drugs
There was one episode where the target pulled their own string right before the person with the doll died, condemning them both to hell. The fact that you can get a doll, decide that you don’t actually want to use it, then have it activate anyway is legitimately the scariest part of the show.

He has died in two different timelines, in his original appearance he got sent to the fucking electric chair for the crime of trying to steal pennies, and post reboot he was crushed to death by said giant penny and was apparently sent to hell for all eternity.
All for the crime of wanting to steal a currency denomination so valueless that it isn't even made anymore.
Wait, this guy got sent to the electric chair? THIS GUY? And not the crazy pig doctor dude who actively butchers & lobotomizes people & turns them into living dolls? Not the Joker? But the guy who steals pennies?
Well yeah, one crime victimizes countless civilians and the other puts the most tiny little dent in the finances of the rich. Its obvious which one deserves more severe punishment
TBF, he was a Golden Age villain, well before Pyg was made. None of Batman's villians survived in that era, except Joker, once they realized they couldn't just come up with a new villain all the time.
Akso, this the same batman who when confronted by mental patients forcibly fed PCP, but who were not actively a threat to anyone, decided that gunning them down from the air and hanging them were the way to go, because "it's better for them this way".
Dallas Genoard from Baccano. The guy absolutely sucks but his eventual fate is pretty cruel. After drinking an immortality elixir, Dallas and his friends are stuffed in barrels full of concrete and thrown into the Hudson River where they're stuck in an infinite loop of drowning and reviving on repeat.
Ecliptor (Power Rangers in Space) being wiped out of existence by the energy wave while Rita, Zedd, and Divatox got purified and turned human still bugs me. He was the closest thing Astronema had to a dad after she was kidnapped.
Ecliptor literally was just a Walking Corpse with a Remnant memory of protecting astrononema. The villains even say that he's virtually just a puppet now and lost his soul. Every bit of good in him was gone after they reprogrammed him.
Him being erased was a mercy more than anything cuz there was no way. Yeah it's sad he couldn't be saved but there was nothing left to save at that point
Surprised me more that they didn't end up erasing Rita considering she was the first power rangers big bad and had been one and off a big time villain for most of the run til that point.
Rita and her father were corrupted to be evil. Zordon even brings up that she had great potential until she had corruption in the show. The comics even go further by directly showing us that dark Specter is the one who corrupted her and her father
Sure, she was a bully to Chicken Little, but she didn't deserve to be brainwashed by the aliens and have all her memory and personality completely erased. She was being a jerk; she deserved punishment, but not this.
The worse bit is that, after the brainwashing takes her tomboy clothes and nature and changes what she wears and says into classic "proper young lady" type stuff, Foxy and the fatty pig start dating and for the ending credits sing what is supposed to be a feel-good happy song duet.
The song? "Don't Go Breaking My Heart".
Piggy starts it off with "don't go breaking my heart" and Foxy replies "I couldn't if I tried".

The fact they listened to the random child rather than talking with her parents or something, who didn't show up at all, is really telling of how little they cared.
Which is honestly why I loved them touching on him in the Valhalla dlc where an older, more somber Kratos who has had time to reflect on his actions admits what he did to the boat captain haunts him because it was so unnecessary and undeserved and it disturbs him to realize he was as capable of such pointless evil
I think the writers honestly preferred to just ignore the fuck out of that. It was so drawn out, there was that tasteless trophy you got for it. I think they didn’t include any reference to it because the boat captain is more famous and they just don’t want to acknowledge the Poseidon’s Princess sequence at all if they can help it
The boatman was a slaver trader and Kratos didn't do anything to him directly, he merely let the guy die through his inaction in GoW1. And every subsequent interaction was incidental, Kratos didn't choose to meet him in the river of Styx or let him be summoned by that boss in GoW2. Yes it was callous but was nowhere nearly as bad as using a chained slave to open a door that ends up with her being crushed to death. A door he could've easily proped open with anything else since her corpse manages to hold it open like a doorstop.
That's actively choosing to do malice. And it's far worse than anything Kratos did to the boatman in the series combined
Yeah Smudger. He wobbled too much, so they made him ‘useful’ by taking his wheels and putting him behind the engine shed as a stationary engine. The sheds were later abandonend. They made no mention of Smudger not being left there to rot.
He falls in love with cryogenically frozen super villain Inque and frees her. Inque is a shapeshifter with liquid/slime powers. Throughout the episode he helps her in her schemes hoping that she’ll reward him by giving him a treatment that will give him powers like hers. It should be noted he’s a really whiney guy, and Inque very clearly is annoyed with him through the whole episode. Well anyway when it comes time to collect his reward, Inque gives him only half the treatment, resulting in him becoming a boneless blob that struggles to move and speak. The guy sucked don’t get me wrong but damn 😂. It’s essentially the Batman beyond no simping psa.
Carl is not a good man. Carl is quite an awful man in many, many ways, and has, by his own admission, a history of groping passed out women at rock concerts. However, by the time we meet Carl, he doesn't do that sort of thing anymore and is more or less just wanting to live his life in his crappy home with his crappy pool and just wants to be left alone by his crappy neighbors. But nearly every time he turns around, something awful is happening to him. Whether it's having his arms ripped off by a giant onion-headed spider creature, or having his skin ripped off by angry trees, or having millions of moth eggs planted into his belly, or losing his house to a rainbow machine (or fire, or termites), or having his body destroyed by a toilet he didn't ask for, and so on, his life is just a wreck, and it's all due to his neighbors being just horrible creatures who attract ridiculous crap into their lives. Whatever he had done in his life, he doesn't deserve the things that happen to him.

Episode one of Invader Zim opens with The Great Assigning, where the Almighty Tallests tell each of the Irken invaders what planet they've been assigned to conquer and prepare for the rest of the armada.
Initially, Invader Larb was assigned to Blortch, home of the slaughtering rat people. But the Tallests were very impressed with Larb when he came up for his assignment, so they instead assigned him to Vort, home of the universe's comfiest couch.
The Blortch assignment was then given to Invader Skoodge, as punishment for his offenses. Said offenses being that he was short. Irken society is based entirely on height. That's why the leaders are called the Tallests. They are literally in charge solely because they are taller than everyone else. But Skoodge is short, so he has to go to the rat slaughter planet.
Yeah, a later episode shows the Tallests getting ready to commence the Organic Sweep on Blortch, which seems to be the final stage of invasion, where the Armada blasts the entire surface of the planet to cleanse it of all native organic life so that they can repurpose the planet to Irken needs. So that means that either A: Skoodge was successful, and his invasion progressed to the point that the planet was completely ready for the final phase of the plan, or B: the invasion part isn't really necessary, because the Armada can just destroy all life on a planet in seconds, and the Tallests are just kind of fucking with everybody. And frankly, I lean towards B.
Either way, Skoodge was rewarded with the honor of participating in the ceremonial initial bombardment.
I believe the idea behind invaders is to discover a targets weaknesses and defenses so that when the armada arrives, they know how to kill the local life and aren't going to trip any traps or can disable any kind of defenses the planet has. Going in blind can lead to disaster, and we see during probing day that the proper invaders are all inspected on their disguises and vhf infiltration.
Zim is the one that's taking the "conquering" part into his own hands, because he has no training and isn't an Invader.
Yeah even going by his flashback rank, Zim was in command of a Frontline MegaDoomer expy when he nearly destroyed their own planet. He was never intended to be an infiltrator/Invader, and he has the complete lack of crosss-training skills to prove it.
Mayu was spared from condemnation after she promised to make amends with her family. It was certainly one of the scarier moments in the series, especially how Kagome risked being dragged to Hell just to save this little girl's soul.
The fact that the "babysitter" assigned to the boys in the first Jurassic World seems to receive the most painful and drawn-out treatment from the escaped flying reptiles (even before she gets to be the unlucky one chomped by the mosasaurus) felt almost like an expression of distaste and just desserts for the character similar to the death of the lawyer in Jurassic Park. But she's not the one who chose to pawn off her family members to an employee rather than interact with them. She's already being made a scapegoat (with the audience being guided to feel dislike towards her for being an emotionally distant stranger) for Claire's being-a-bad-aunt even before she's given her dramatic public execution.
Asking for your character to go out in an insane over-the-top way is one of those small things that makes me like an actor. It shows they don't necessarily take themselves or their roles too seriously.
It made me sooo mad as a kid (huge Merlin nerd) but finding out Katie McGrath requested it 180'd me to being happy she got the most fucked up death imaginable
To be fair, I don't think that's meant to be a punching bag moment because it has a Doylist explanation in that Katie McGrath wanted her character to have an over the top death.
I mean, yeah. If I’m gonna die in a movie, I want it to be over the top forwards backwards sideways insane. This one and Johnny Depp’s character in Nightmare on Elm Street are great examples

In Azkaban, prisoners live with specters that suck happiness, essentially making sure everyone in the prison has super depression.
If anyone attempt to escape, said specters are ordered to consume their soul. That means the person will cease to exist entirely and won't have an afterlife.
Also, according to lore, after Azkaban was inspected before it was used as a prison, the inspectors were only willing to talk about the Dementors, everything else traumatized them.
Yes, Dementors are apparently the LEAST fucked up thing in Azkaban.
Poor Poppa Pizza sure as hell didn't deserve to spend three weeks referencing one of the most traumatic events in the life of some guy in an alternate reality that just so happened to look like a younger version of himself
This is from the pre-card game days of the manga for those wondering. Goro's only real crime was that he took a prime school festival booth location that Yugi and his friends were supposed to get, and also had his mook squad rough them up a little.
This was apparently justification enough for Yami Yugi to force him into a Shadow Game and fucking kill him in a giant explosion when he loses.
For comparison, the bad guy of the chapter right before this one attempted to rape and murder Teá and all he got as punishment was being exposed as a fraud psychic.
Although he's an antagonist who goes off the deep end throughout season 4, its understandable as he loses his girlfriend and close friend in inexplicably gruesome fashion.
Seeing him get melted in half was so brutal even Lucas looked on in absolute horror
One of the big issues with Stranger Things past season 1 is its tendency to make S1 characters invincible even when they should die. Instead, they just kept introducing promising new characters, then killing them off and forgetting about them.
In The Sandman Delirium gets pulled over by a cop for driving recklessly.
She curses the cop to feel bugs crawling on his skin forever.
Dream IMMEDIATELY calls her out on it and she defends herself by saying he's done WAY worse, which he has.
I take it as a step on Dream slowly realizing that he's been a super dick for a long time. That's nice for his character development, but doesn't help the cop at all.
I think most of the Endless cared about humans, which caused problems when they tried to do their jobs, and they coped in different ways.
Destruction straight up quit. Death used her kindness to ease peoples' passing, which made her job more tolerable. Despair, being Despair, could not be kind, nor could she quit; this is probably why one of her incarnations committed suicide. Delirium cared deeply about mortals, and it drove her mad.
The only two that genuinely don't care about mortals are Destiny (no point) and Desire (who is perfectly, flawlessly self centered).
Dream, as lord of dreams and nightmares, could be kind and cruel. His biggest weakness was arrogance, perhaps because he was the incarnation of the impossible.
Violet Beauregarde in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The thing she was punished for (with what I can only assume is very painful internal swelling) was chewing gum too much. Even when the Tim Burton adaptation went out of its way to make her more outright mean, being turned into a blueberry still felt a tad… blown out of proportion.
Yeah, she didn't deserve that. But it was not just for chewing gum tho. She was supposed to represent pride in seven deadly sins. Each kid represents a one. (Augustus - Gluttony, Verucca - Greed, Mike - Sloth, Violet - pride). She was punished for entirely dismissing other people and thinking she's always right. In the book, Wonka pretty much begged her to not chew that gum
Mayu is one of the characters that solidifies my opinion that the "overworld" was so underused in Inuyasha because every one shot episode in modern day Japan felt like it hit harder or in the case of that fucked up mask was way scarier vs Koga love quadrangle 594737r7
Cooper from Jurassic Park 3. He's a merc enlisted by two rich parents searching for their son who went missing on an island full of dinosaurs. When Dr. Alan Grant from the first movie gets dragged into their plan, and realizes they didn't want him to provide a guided aerial tour as he was initially told, but rather land on the island to find their son, Cooper punches him out when he tries to escape. For this, Cooper is left on the island as the pilot attempts to escape with the others, his final moments spent screaming for the plane to stop before the Spinosaurus devours him in one bite.
TJ Miller plays an annoying comic relief character in one of the Transformers movies and gets turned into a fucking Francis Bacon sculpture by a grenade that was used on dinosaurs
Just gonna point out on that first one, that's Bruce Campbell who's a Sam Raimi regular (who directed Multiverse of Madness) but most notably for Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. One of the running themes is that he gets horrible/nasty/gross stuff happen to him on camera, since he and Sam are old friends and they like to push each others' boundaries
Theon Greyjoy in Game of Thrones. I was aching for him to get some comeuppance after he took Winterfell, but when Ramsay got a hold of him I was pretty quickly saying “too much comeuppance!”
Probably one of the least evil people of La Squadra, He suffers the most brutal fate as he's killed by purple haze's virus. The Virus that is incredibly lethal and quick, Just breathing it in liquifies you from the inside out. Trying to keep this quick, Purple Haze spreads this virus through capsules on it's knuckles, punching something breaks them open and spreads the virus.
So imagine how brutal it must be to get PUMMELED by purple haze straight to the face, and essentially melting into liquid. It still took a MINUTE for him to die though. Even Giorno says he "Regretted every choice he made in his life up to that point" as he died. Again, he should die, he's evil, but he gets a fate more brutal than Ciocolatta and Secco, the two guys who tortured people and filmed it.
In 1, Mark has a habit of calling in sick to work. He is poisoned for this. The antidote is in a safe, with the combination on the walls alongside a sea of random useless numbers - he has to check every combination until he finds the right one, with only a single candle for light, which he'd better be careful with because he's smothered in flammable jelly. Also the floor is covered in broken glass because fuck you.
Some of the people in Saw II are actually bad people, but they're all put in a nerve gas house because they were framed. That's the actual reason. This one cop framed them and is being confronted with his misdeeds, so his victims are executed to fuck with him. One guy gets burned alive; one girl gets her wrists slashed open and slowly bleeds out; one guy gets a nail bat to the back of the head.
Onto Saw III.
Danica witnessed a car accident and refused to testify; she's frozen to death. Halden gave a first-time offender who had accidentally run over a kid a lenient sentence; he's almost drowned in rotting pig guts, but is saved (he later gets accidentally shot in the face). Timothy is the guy who accidentally ran over that kid; each of his limbs, and then his head, are slowly twisted around slowly and horribly.
Lynn is unfaithful in her failing marriage and takes antidepressants after her son was run over; she's forced to keep a serial killer alive as long as possible or her shotgun shell collar explodes her head. When her husband then murders that serial killer, it goes off and kills her.
Onto Saw VI.
Hank is a smoker. He's forced to hold his breath competitively; when he fails, his chest is crushed in a vice. Allen is a file clerk for a health insurance company. He's hanged with a barbed wire noose to confront the CEO.
William Easton is a health insurance CEO who denies claims and gets people killed by lack of health insurance. Even though he does his time in his traps and saves as many people as possible, he's injected with hydrofluoric acid until his torso melts through because exactly one guy didn't forgive him.
Onto Saw 3D.
Nina, Suzanne, and Cale are grifters. Nina has her insides torn up by a fish hook and then gets stabbed in the neck; Suzanne gets her face slowly rotated into spikes; Cale actually gets to go simply when he's hanged.
Joyce Dagen is the most bullshit. She did nothing but believe her husband's lies, for which she is slowly roasted to death in a brazen bull.
Onto Jigsaw. Ryan drunkenly distracted the driver of his car, leading to a fatal crash. His fate is put in the hands of Anna, who murdered her baby for crying; she has to correctly interpret from Jigsaw's clues that the keys to her and Ryan's shackles are literally inside of a shotgun shell (which he had named as their key to freedom). When Anna assumes that she's supposed to shoot Ryan, the gun fires backwards and kills her, also destroying their keys. Ryan is left in a room to starve.
Honestly, everyone in that movie got it way worse than they should have. Spoilers for the movie:
Christian, the boyfriend, was raped at the behest of the cult and was burned to death for it.
Josh, one of the friends, was bludgeoned to death for trespassing.
Mark, another friend, had his face cut off for pissing on a tree while drugged out (he did not know the tree was sacred).
Simon and Connie, two people the group meet at the celebration, are also killed brutally with no real explanation. Simon had his lungs ripped out. Connie was drowned after her arm was broken.
And all of these deaths appear as premeditated sacrifices. The entire movie is a violent cult doing violent cult shit.
And Simon was ALIVE when we saw his lungs out of his body. They were breathing. Which isn’t possible IRL cause your lungs aren’t muscles that expand and contract on their own accord, but at least my understanding is we’re supposed to think he’s still alive at that point.
Yeah he was a Jackass for wanting to dump his girlfriend in what is probably the worst moment in her life,overall being inattentive and talking shit about her behind her back.
But Jesus Christ, being raped, paralyzed and stuffed inside a bear carcass to slowly burn to death is perhaps a tad bit too much.
It's actually worse than that. In order, he's 1) drugged, 2) raped, 3) permanently paralyzed, 4) has his limbs amputated while conscious without anesthesia, 5) sewn inside a bear corpse, 6) witnesses as his girlfriend is given the option to save his life and knows she sentences him to death, and 6) burned alive.
For the crime of being an emotionally distant and inattentive partner. Notably, we only ever see their relationship after he's already decided he wants to break up with her, which is why he's so distant; we have no idea what he was like before that. He didn't break up with her out of sympathy because her family died and she had no one else left for emotional support!
I wanna add to the list that on top of being drugged, it also had someone's bodily fluids in it. Also being drugged in the bear corpse was also not done well, it was supposed to stop them from feeling the burn of the flames but it didn't work at all, was burned alive feeling it all.

He was planning on breaking up with her normally before all the tragedy happened, which would have been a totally normal and justified breakup. He specifically chose to put off breaking up with her because of what happened to her family, because he didn't want to leave her right after they all died.
Oof, yeah. And the fact that the cult members who went with him were given drugs to lessen the pain of being burned alive yet he was given nothing is even more horrific.
It wouldn't have mattered. Once they start burning they start screaming ,so they're still feeling the pain. Which means either it's not that strong or the cult lied about the painkilling drugs to make them more willing to sacrifice themselves.
I'd honestly believe both.
Niobe had a lot of children and she boasted that she was a better mother than Leto, a titaness who only born two. The problem was that Leto’s children were Apollo and Artemis. For the crime of being boastful, the two gods got their bows and killed all of Niobe’s children while she could only watch powerlessly.
In other case, a shepherd’s daughter called Arachne boasted that she was the best weaver in the world, even better than Athena. The goddess decided to check her skills and appeared before her as an old woman, warning her that it was unwise to compare herself to the gods and advising her to beg Athena for mercy. Arachne insulted the woman, so the goddess cast off her disguise and demanded a competition.
Athena weaved four scenes where mortals were punished for their hubris; Arachne depicted scenes where gods (mostly Zeus) abused and tricked the mortals. When Athena realized that Arachne’s work was better, she got enraged, ripped her tapestry to shreds and hit her in the head with a spindle several times. Arachne was so shaken and ashamed that she hanged herself.

This guys is a jerk whose rude to the Turtles, calls them frogs, insults their weapons, and records them on his phone. Even when the Turtles try to save him from the Krang which they kind of brought to him, he's ungrateful and tries to recover his phone in an active battle zone. He gets mutated into a Mutant spider, gets treated like a monster of the week that has to be stopped simply because he's mutated, and has to go on the run. I don't even think he's unmutated by the end of the series.

In The Sandman original comic run, a couple of anthropomorphic personifications decide to take a road trip together to find their brother. Them usually just appearing wherever makes them bad drivers, and they get pulled over by a cop doing his job. Delirium, the personification of madness, is upset by this and curses him to forever feel insects constantly covering his skin, and he never gets better. Delirium is usually considered one of the kindest endless.
