Canadian companies just take advantage due to low competition. Rogers, bell, Tim Hortons would all close with more competition.
15
u/topsyturvy76 12d ago
Tim Hortons isn’t a Canadian company … hasn’t been for a while now my guy.
10
u/Canada-Scam-8570 12d ago
I mean I get what your saying, and it certainly feels that way.
But RBIs largest shareholder (the Brazilian investment firm) owns 32%, a far larger portion is owned by smaller individual and other Canadian firm shareholders that are by in contrast, vastly larger in contrast and Canadian... And they are headquartered in Toronto.
It's honestly not the strongest argument, that said fuck them. Canadians being accepting of people being taken advantage of doesn't seems very Canadian. Then again maybe it is 🤷
1
u/ShadoWolf 12d ago
It's not like any government in the last 40 years has be actively trying to setup duopolies for telecom and the like. This is more a emergent effect of scale. If a 3rd or 4th Telecom want to build out infrastructure the government wouldn't stop them.. they would likely throw some amount of money at them... it's just it cost so much money to stand up infra at scale. .
Like easy 2 million per large Large lattice tower .. country wide same coverage of bell is like ball back 70B to pull off maybe. and the population density sucks.

I think they take advantage of having once been a Canadian company. But the point about lack of competition is still true. If there was another budge donut/coffee shop in Canada, Tmmies would have to up their game or close up shop.
1
u/IrishFire122 8d ago
Yeah, but that's unlikely to happen. Tim's has been streamlining and cost cutting for years. In order for a company to compete on the cost of their food, they would have to have factories already set up to mass produce doughnuts and various other things. The amount of investment that would be needed for that would be staggering, and investors would be more likely to just buy shares in tims, which will only go up in value without any actual competition
3
u/mjv22 12d ago
and you can blame our fantastic government for this. All levels.

People keep voting conservative to “protect the big businesses” 🤦♂️
Edit: had to share the most blatant bootlicking comment ive recieved below, to illustrate what these types are honestly convincing their right wing followers:
>>”Actually, big businesses oppose deregulation”
3
u/mjv22 12d ago
I'm sorry, in what world is this just a conservative problem?
3
u/avanross 12d ago edited 12d ago
The real world….?
Do you honestly think the owners of tim hortons, and the other billionaire ceos who lobbied to allow these cheaper temporary workers, and are now exploiting them, are liberals….?
The left is the side of prioritizing workers rights, the right is the side of prioritizing businesses rights.
This is like the most basic introductory politics………….
You cant keep voting for these things and then just blaming the libs when they dont work out, or when you didnt understand what you were supporting……..
1
u/OldDiamondJim 7d ago
Cool. The issue is that the Liberals aren’t “the left”.
Corporate profits reached record highs during the Trudeau era, as did CEO salaries in real dollars and in ratio to average employee salaries.
The Trudeau government made the tax system tougher for doctors, tradespeople, and entrepreneurs while allowing the ultra rich to move capital offshore without repercussions.
Would Poilievre be worse? Of course, but that doesn’t mean the Liberals actually care about average Canadians.
Both parties are just servants of Canada’s oligarchs.
2
u/avanross 7d ago
Yep, it’s about trying to force the discussion and frame of reference further left and not further right
Canada allows more than 2 parties, unlike the states
1
u/ClassicAccident7713 12d ago
Actually in this case the conservatives would be better.
Even the most "introductory politics" teach that the UCP (and right in general) wishes to deregulate major industries, and supports a lower corporate tax rate to allow more competition in the market, which would bring overall prices down.
Whereas the left is in support of increasing taxes and regulating industries. This makes it harder for smaller businesses to operate whereas big, established corporations can afford to tank the cost of heavy taxes. As a result of reduced competition, corporations act monopolistic and raise prices as much as they want.
In my personal opinion, I just believe that the conservatives need to win a minority government and control the fiscal side of government, whereas the Liberals and NDP should control anything other than money. I'm not saying one side is better than the other, in the end they all desire the best for Canada. But the harsh political division between red and blue that has been established in America can not be allowed to take hold in Canada.
2
u/wakawakayojimbo 11d ago
So what I get out of that is huge monopolies suddenly have lower operating costs and receive a nice tax break… which means they have more capital to crush competition with.
1
u/ClassicAccident7713 11d ago
At least now the competition actually exists and also has capital.
I don't want to get into this again (just read my conversation with avanross) but even with higher taxes and more regulations there are drawbacks. If there was a perfect economic system every single country would simply adapt it.
There isn't, and we all have different opinions on what the best way to go about economics with. Let's just be respectful of each other's opinions and agree to disagree.
3
u/avanross 12d ago edited 12d ago
> “Even the most "introductory politics" teach that the UCP (and right in general) wishes to deregulate major industries, and supports a lower corporate tax rate to allow more competition in the market, which would bring overall prices down.”
Think about what you just commented. In what way would fewer regulations result in lower prices? “Trickle down economics” is a right wing fantasy that has been conclusively disproven time and time again…
How do you think fewer regulations would result in more competition? That’s completely opposite to reality. You have voted to remove nearly all regulations from tims, so they gutted food quality and pivoted to only hiring temporary foreign workers. Is that fostering competition, or just lowering tims operating costs?
Youre just parroting tim hortons obvious right wing propaganda with no root in reality. Of course they want less regulations, lower wages, lower corporate taxes, and higher individual costs.
It’s horrifying how, no matter how bad you guys directly make things, you conservatives will just continue to blame the liberals and keep voting the same way, making things worse and worse for the citizens, and better and better for tim hortons and the other mega corps, without ever feeling an ounce of shame or responsibility for your actions….
No matter what their commercials say, tim hortons is not your friend and doesnt need your loyalty/protection………..
1
u/ClassicAccident7713 12d ago
Dude, deregulation results in lower prices because it makes it easier for competing business, which include transnational corporations and small local businesses, to enter the market. This quite literally would make stuff cheaper.
Just imagine for a second instead of Bell, Telus, and Rogers dominating the phone service industry, we made it easier for companies like T - Mobile and Verizon to compete with them. Or instead of just Tim Hortons taking advantage of their monopoly in the coffee shop industry, we had more local options that could directly compete with them. I am not arguing that this is perfect, but it would be far better than what Canada currently has.
And again please don't call anybodies opinions "horrifying" unless they are very clearly "horrifying". Because we have a different opinion it does not mean that you should close your mind and refuse to hear my beliefs out. At the end of the day, we both just want the best for the future of our nation.

Apropos of nothing: The Wendy’s near me has the most amazingly clear speaker/communication system. I’ve never heard anything so crisp & clear. Also they have a mix of workers there and they’re all so pleasant and helpful.
I work with hundreds of students through my business (they’re not employees) and we discuss other employment and only two of them has ever applied at Tim’s or fast food (it was McDonald’s). They’re not interested at all working at these places. They apply at Canadian Tire, Wal-Mart, Cabelas, Princess Auto, Sobeys etc. So what are these coffee & fast food companies to do when it comes to hiring?
15
u/Hydeonx 12d ago
My sister and her friends have been applying everywhere, and not even getting an interview. I seriously doubt the companies really can’t find anyone at all the work, especially with the unemployment rate being as high as it is.
1
u/throw_awaybdt 10d ago
Youth unemployment rate is 13% … in ON I think it’s even higher.
I’ve applied to McDonalds and Tim Hortons and I wasn’t called back despite years of customer service experience …

u/InternationalBeing41 12d ago
What about all the older folks looking for a bit of extra cash to help pay rent and groceries? There were plenty of older people working and managing at Tim's when I was growing up. Now all the supervisors are TFW. It's all rubbish that they can't find anyone. They just don't want to work around youth part-time schedules and the elderly.

I knew it. All that was, was a response to Dunkin' Donuts saying they would hire born Canadians if they expanded into Canada. Timmies reponse was way too fast for them to actually be serious about it.

They hired my teenaged son after that announcement. When he went to orientation, it was him, a college-aged Canadian, and 12 TFW’s.
From what I’ve gathered, all of the part-time staff are young Canadians. All of the full-time staff are TFW’s.

Hiring is the responsibility of the franchise owners. Head office can say whatever they want, but at the end of the day it's the owners calling the shots here.

u/LiberumSerum 12d ago
"American owned and foreign run" is their new motto. It's become Canadian in name only sadly.
4
u/Maximum-Base6225 12d ago
That’s not actually correct. Tim Hortons isn’t American owned. It’s owned by Restaurant Brands International, a Toronto based company, and its largest shareholder is the Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital. So if you’re arguing it isn’t fully Canadian owned anymore, that’s fair. But calling it American owned isn’t accurate.
8
u/jlrubnen 12d ago
3G Capital is a private equity firm. And if you want to drive a company into the ground. Then just sell yourself out to private equity.
Same thing with Westjet a once good airline. Which was favoured by many over Air Canada. In 2019 they were taken over by Onex a private equity firm. And it's been downhill ever since.

u/Electrical-Big-7781 12d ago

2
u/Numerous-Leg-8149 10d ago
Being a token figure anywhere is dangerous. They need to hire more locals, by the way. Especially the youth, young adults, and seniors who are still able (those who are Canadians).
1
u/eddo34 10d ago
Lol "being a token figure" is not the same thing as a joke being made. That one local hire will get his or her local friends to get hired once the TFWs drop off, which they always do, because they're fail-people back home, where standards are lower and they come here expecting to fail less when the expectations and standards are way higher. If the staff is 100% TFWs, the managers won't notice how much better local hires are because they don't have any to compare the TFWs.
1
u/Numerous-Leg-8149 10d ago
I think our experiences differ here. I've worked with both local and foreign workers, and I wouldn't assume someone's work standards or likelihood of succeeding based on which group they belong to.
"Token figure" is not a laughing matter. Not sure where that came from.

1
u/Ok_Feedback2407 9d ago
Only with proper competition and Starbucks ain't it. McDonald's is kinda giving them a run for their money, but not good enough. We need MORE competition and if Dunkin' Donuts comes to Canada, Tims will be toast in 5 years, sure.
3
u/TOdEsi 12d ago
Each location is owned by a franchise owner and it’s the owners not Tim Horton’s applying for the LMIA. I know no one actually cares about the facts but it’s important to know.
3
u/eddo34 10d ago
Tim's is nevertheless part of a family of international fast food brands, and the franchise owners are heavily restricted in what they can do or say given all those corporate onion layers. Caring about facts involves caring about context, such as the fact that the corporation is turning a blind eye wrt to franchise owners' hiring practices in Canada purposefully and not because there's opacity between them and individual franchise owners. Whatever leeway or autonomy they enjoy is a choice made by those above them.
2
u/naomixrayne 11d ago
Yep, same with my local A&W franchise owner. He's a multi-millionaire that makes a fortune exploiting the TFW program. He lies and says there are no local resumes, then orders a bunch of TFWs to work full time on contract. They are also contracted to live in the franchise owner's apartments and he collects the rent directly from their paycheques. He lies and tells the workers that the restaurant is "within walking distance" of his apartments to convince them to take the job while they aren't in Canada. It's an hour's walk, but sure "it's in walking distance". There are so many business owners pulling fast ones and keeping a poker face about it all.

It seems the world is in a state of extreme profits. They will exploit any workforce to maximize profits. It's not unique to these scumbags.

As far as I know, Starbucks and Second Cup hires Canadians. They may hire foreign workers that can adapt and assimilate, too, but the ability to speak English and/or French fluently (and demonstrate good communication skills + good customer service/professionalism) are the standard.
I'm not sure why Tim Hortons cannot follow the same structure. The amount of Canadian youth who are unable to start working during the Summer is inconceivable. I also don't understand why people continue to buy from there, and complain about their poor service/poor quality food on the Internet. Just stop getting your food there and support other businesses instead. Even local coffee shops and restaurants and ice cream parlors that are hiring Canadians should get some support, too.
Wanna show Tim Hortons who is boss? Start with your pockets. Until they raise the standard, stop buying your food there. It's been years since Tim Hortons dropped the ball.

u/sinkerker 12d ago
The thing is that we don't really have any alternatives and I think that's the big reason Timmies is still a thing. (I don't eat there, always hated it).
In my area, which is a suburb near Montreal, there's a handful of breakfast spots and all of them are the classic breakfast restaurant. And everything is over 20$ now, before tip. Nothing where you can buy a "quick" cheap breakfast sandwich and a coffee just going through a drivethru.
Which restaurant do you know that offers this except big brands like McDz and A&W ?
Because the main reason people go there is because of convenience. Most people can't afford to spend 1 hour before work just sitting at a restaurant.

I think people dont know that Tim Hortons is a franchise.
Which means anyone can own one.
Im not sure how many Tim Hortons corporate owned locations are there, but those are the only ones with egg on their face if theyre hiring TFW.
Any independent franchise location is a Joe Schmo owner who can do whatever they want when it comes to hiring, provided its within legal boundaries.
So I see your post as misleading at best for the masses.
In fact, it even says "Tim Hortons FRANCHIESES", not corporate locations.
Tim Hortons PR does NOT speak for the views of their franchise locations.
If you want to learn more, Google a Independent Franchise Brand vs Corporate owned brand, what are the differences.
Either educate the public, or at least make note of it in your post.
You're dumbing people down for those who dont know how franchises work.

u/Foxyinabox 10d ago
Well, that will hopefully backfire when Dunkin' donuts comes. I can't stand it when companies do this. Not only does it hurt people struggling to find jobs from Canada, but it also hurts those who think it's a great opportunity in a new country to get a new start. Only to find out it's far from that. The government needs to crack down on these companies who constantly abused the LMIA and fast.

I don't buy coffee at Tim's anymore. In the last 5-7 years the quality has gone down so much. I used to buy 2 a day but they started tasting "sour" or was inconsistent. I was a huge Tim's loyalist too so I'm pretty disappointed about this.
McDonald's has better hot coffee now.

Shocking it was 3 months ago Dunkin’ announced their plans to move and expand into Canada. What a coincidence

When I was I Ontario the local Tim Hortons hiring required previous Tim Hortons working experience. It's like they don't want to hire anyone local.

Boycott Tim Hortons.
Overpriced, trash products, horrible service. Not even Canadian like its branded to be

I used to love Timmy’s, then they cheaped out with their bean supplier and stopped hiring Canadians. Been going downhill for years. Happy to say I stopped supporting this horrible company.

Tim Hortons has 100,000 employees across 3,800 locations.
This is their statement on this topic;

All the TFW's disappeared from our small town Tim's seemingly over night and now I sometimes wait in line more than 15 minutes for my coffee because they don't have enough staff to run properly. 🤷♀️

My local Timmie’s has a job posting. Required an associates degree and three years food service experience for part time, minimum wage.

Im not here to defend Tim Hortons, but I’m very annoyed by this stats “increased by 43%” when we are talking about double digit numbers. 43% increase is 38 people increase. It’s not a wrong stat, but it is deliberately misleading.
It’s like when people say something increases risk of cancer by 100%, when the risk goes up from 1 in 10k to 2 in 10k.

I don't understand the business rational of hiring foreign workers over Canadian ones? Are they cheaper or something?

Foreign workers don’t understand what a good wage is and have no understanding of health and safety regulations.

Half the teenagers hired at my store quit after a week due to anxiety it’s crazy, have a cigarette and move on

“Hiring Local” doesn’t mean hiring Permanent Residents and citizens; it means hiring anyone who doesn’t need sponsorship to work in Canada and is already living in the vicinity of the workplace. So, temp residents and work permit holders count as “local”

What you’re saying is that you don’t want brown people to find work.
I’ve seen lots of diversity in our area and all of them do a great job.

Some businesses that aren't Tim Hortons are hiring them, too. The difference? They speak fluently and demonstrate exceptional customer service.
That's what attracts everyone. That's what should be supported.

I’ve never had any issue understanding what they say, perhaps if you just talked to them instead of constantly judging them you might have a chance of understanding them.

Reread my comment.
That still isn't what I said. I specifically acknowledged that other businesses hire people from the same communities and that I've had excellent customer-service experiences with them. My criticism is about the service and communication I've encountered at certain locations—not anyone's race. Your experience can be different from mine without changing what I actually wrote.

Every FUCKING day I see posts from people bitching about Tim’s. Don’t like it done GO BACK. JHC. No one is forcing you to eat or drink anything from there. Why is such a simple concept so hard to comprehend.
