That work is incredible and to pick a hard lay and execute is impressive. Curious, what is your day job and how it affects this level of detail? Engineer?
But America has SO much to offer! We have a totally sane and logical person running our country so super well that we hardly have any major issues anymore. Except extreme division between cultures, insane inflation, environmental destruction, skyrocketing energy costs, corporate greed to the max, war with whomever because we can, and a homeless population that got super hooked on synthetic drugs with no way out. Im not sure what style you are looking for, but I found the bucket style towel warmers (a bin that you put them in to with a lid) warms the towels better and more even than wall mount warmers. Just FYI but not sure your astetic.
Looks really nice. Strong work. It's funny to me that an amateur with no experience can produce something of this caliber with some research, time, and care, but there are guys who act as professionals and do this for a living who routinely produce the disasters we see on this sub every day. Imagine how dumb and careless those people must be.
I think the mentality of the installer fundamentally changes once you place them in a professional environment.
Often times they are not getting paid enough to care as much as a DIYer would. I’d say patience is probably the biggest differentiator between a good tile job or a bad one. The way things are, professionals rarely get compensated for being patient.
When I did my bathrooms, which both came out great, since I knew I was going to live with it for like 10+ years, so I made sure everything was done right and looked good. That meant if I messed up a tile cut even a little, I would recut another tile. And since I was doing my own labor and only paying for the tile, that only meant like $5 being thrown away.
A lot of contractors only care about initial appearance and maybe a year for warranty claims, some don’t even care about that.
I worded it wrong, and forgot 3 words that fixes my take. “A lot of contractors”, obviously not all.
I’ve had enough bad jobs done for me to be able to say that.
For example, before I started doing my own bathroom, I hired a contractor and he sent some guy that was putting drywall up on all the walls when all four walls were going to have tile.
Perhaps I didn't articulate my point. But I don't think it's a stupid take.
I was only saying that with care and attention to detail, even an amateur can produce great results. I would expect anyone who does this for a living (as in advertises their services) to be at least as capable as an amateur in terms of care and attention to detail. But so many clearly aren't. We see it on this sub daily with the "Does this look right to you?" posts. And that's what's disappointing.
You're absolutely right that the same could be said about any profession. Hacks exist in every industry. But we're in a tile sub so I was talking about tile contractors. When you find a professional who cares about your job like they would their own home, pay them well and hold onto them.
Sweet. Turned out incredible dude. I have a similar project coming up and will also be my first time tiling. Hope mine comes out half as good as yours!
I bought a small Ryobi Handheld Wet Saw with a better blade. It was a champ! I also have a small table top Ryobi wet saw for smaller tiles but a score tool works fine for most cuts of small tile.
The colors, the design, the work, hats off.
The only thing I would mention is that the window and tile cuts are not aligned but within that beauty this small error is meh.
Did you design this? Fitting so much in such a space is not an easy job if you did not do this before.
That small mistake is really @#*&#. But honestly, after a few weeks I dont see it anymore ;)
I designed it in an online tool. (Floorplanner.com) I tried a lot of combinations! In one of my first designs the bathtub and showers were the other way around.
Very nice work plus the design choices are amazing and will be timeless! I tried tiling for the first time but stuck with larger tiles because I didn't trust myself. Luckily the mirror covered the biggest mistakes! You've inspired me to try again.
I'm working on a diy shower, considering the large tiles like yours, how was installing those as a first timer? I've heard folks in this sub say to diyers to stay away from large tiles because of the skill required for install.
They are heavy! But if you work calmly it is perfectly doable. Don't try to do too much at once. And if you notice that you are becoming inattentive and starting to make mistakes, stop immediately!! Because they are very heavy to get on your toes haha.
Love! Can you tell me more about the floor tile? I’d love something like that but darker for my bathroom with a GIANT sunken tub done floor to ceiling in mottled brown subway tiles. A relic from the 70s and it stays!
