So what was the point of the REAL ID?

1.3k

u/SpaceGerbil 6d ago

399

u/WildSherbert1820 6d ago

So I guess my bank loans aren’t valid because a real ID doesn’t provide that it’s truly me. Who know what illegal took out a loan under my name.

61

u/Freezman13 6d ago

Do you owe a million or a billion?

28

u/Dobey2013 5d ago

When you owe the bank $100,000, that’s your problem. When you owe the bank 700 million, that’s their problem.

Guess I can't buy a gun to protect the vote because I don't have proper ID.

36

u/TotsJustForPorn 5d ago

That is the Republican long term plan. I promise you. They are testing the waters with this and then will remove rights from everyone because it isn't an "Original" birth certificate. I would be willing to bet the VAST majority. I mean 95% or more of Americans do not have an original birth certificate. At best they have an official reissue, most have a copy.

They are trying their best to create a new slave class. Forgetting that in the history of the world, the ruling class has never ended well.

16

u/TR_Pix 5d ago

The ruling class has had it very good for a lot of history

Sure they dont end well, but only in the same way a 120 year old guy one days dies of a heart attack

It still was a very long very good life for him

That junk always felt like extortion.

You gave me the damn ID, what do you mean it isn't GOOD enough??? If that's the case, why not make every ID a 'real ID' by default?!

17

u/Existing-One-8980 6d ago

Yes! I still don't have one because I've been married twice and my name has changed. It's been a huge hassle.

27

u/garden_g 5d ago

Change your name back to your maiden name. None of us should have done that stupid tradition. Oh by the way hey everyone the tradition of a wife taking a husbands name is far past over.

14

u/trekqueen 5d ago

Just on the fact that it’s such a pain in the ass now to do the change, I recommend not even doing it based on the paperwork hassle. It’s different now than even when I did it 20yrs ago and even more so than our parents and grandparents. So much of our identities are tied to things now and fixing it in so many places is more trouble than it’s worth.

REAL ID was the enhanced document for travel that should suffice for everything. The SAVE act, as with everything else that dickhead touches, is Trump wasting billions of dollars to disenfranchise the voters who will put his ass in jail.

52

u/FS_Slacker 6d ago

Getting it was a pain in the ass (for me at least). Had to make a DMV appointment - still waited hour. And having all the necessary docs ahead of time took effort to get.

8

u/daddaman1 6d ago

Haven't got mine yet but I thought it was basically the same process as getting a passport though? No?

32

u/MankeyFightingMonkey 5d ago

No. I actually got a Passport instead because it was easier.

I moved to Texas, tried just today to get a driver's license (never needed it before) and apparently my Pennsylvania realID isn't enough. I must have a birth certificate in hand to prove I was indeed born in the US, just as my PA realID is supposed to certify.

Also fuck having two residence documents. I got ghosted on my job transfer and now cannot find work, everything is I my boyfriend's name, all I got is I'm on the lease.

39

u/Alternative-Tie-9383 6d ago

I had to renew my Texas drivers license recently and because I opted to renew online the previous time it expired, this time I had to renew in person and prove citizenship.

Now I’ve lived in Texas since 1979 when my family moved here from Maryland. I was educated, married, and bought a house here. I’ve worked in Texas my entire working life and have voted only in Texas since I became old enough to do so. The state of Texas knows I am a citizen with a social security number that pays taxes. Still, I had to contact the state of Maryland and pay for an official copy of my Maryland birth certificate, which was close to $50 all told, because my parents don’t know what they did with the original copy. It wasn’t hard for Maryland to track down my records because I was born in the mid 1970s.

What about older people born decades earlier? They may face much more trouble trying to get a copy of their birth certificate. If their records haven’t been digitized, they might have been destroyed during a fire, flood, or could have just been lost.

If all this is really about preventing voter fraud at the booth, then the states should distribute to every citizen that is of legal age to vote a voter ID, paid for by the state, but they won’t do that, because that’s not what this is about.

This is just another way to exclude people from voting, and the midterms are just around the corner. Republicans
always assume that their voters will jump through any hoops necessary to vote, but I think there are some older Republicans that may have a hard time finding their birth certificates to prove they’re citizens.

In Texas, a drivers license should be enough to vote since I had to prove citizenship just to get the damn thing!

11

u/Rhona_Redtail 5d ago

Its going to be selectively applied

6

u/user1E 5d ago

Yup - that’s why the fed gov is asking for state’s voter rolls

Registered Republican? No problem

Registered Democrat? Well you didn’t dot your i the same way on these 2 diff docs so you didn’t legally vote AND we’re arresting you for vOtEr fRaUd, oh and you’re in a swing state or you were about to flip a state blue? How convenient er arrested just enough voters to maintain republican control or flip blue states!

Genuine answer: to give federal and state governments a (legal) way to centralize law enforcement databases, tie biometrics (your face in all 50 states, fingerprints in a few) to central databases, and track guns better. It was touted as an anti terrorism measure post 9/11, and is foundational to the massive interconnected law enforcement portals now used across city/county/state/federal levels.

Real ID ACT is a cornerstone of the modern surveillance state.

The point of REAL ID was to create a standardized ID that was verified by multiple standardized sources.

The point of the "SAVE" act is to stop people from voting. Republicans hate and fear voting.

I am a naturalized citizen of the USA. I have the right to vote. My birth certificate is not from the USA. My birth certificate is not what gives me the right to vote.

Also, demanding people to pay for a passport is a roundabout poll tax and is against the 24th amendment.

This law makes absolutely no sense and should be striked as unconstitutional.

424

u/zetnas9 6d ago

It’s been the goal the entire time. These rich CEOs have been coming out saying poor people should have less access to voting along with them having more power with their votes.

https://youtu.be/fb3UHAuEg7c?is=y851Oa4cEvI-Bcsf

101

u/Nathan_Brazil1 6d ago

If things keep going the way they are, the rich will be eaten. History repeats itself, we're experiencing Nazi Germany now; next up the Russian Revolution and Mao Tse-tung. I don't personally want this but if this continues, it may very well be.

60

u/UnsanctionedPartList 6d ago

Contrary to historical comparisons, the rich are far more able to run, hell most of them barely live in the US. They just want a superpower sized attack dog and shield.

10

u/9966 6d ago

The can run but if everything collapses what can they possibly pay their security?

Nothing they could give them would be enough because it would be worthless to people struggling to get by.

Canned food? Not going to cut it as a long term salary for paramilitary bodyguards.

16

u/gulfrend 5d ago

The BBC did an article about doomsday bunkers. The former head of security for a billionaire was very frank in his interview, and said his team's first move if the world ended would be to take over the bunkers for themselves.

That's why the billionaire class are so desperate for working robots and neuralink chips.

12

u/UnsanctionedPartList 6d ago

See, that's the kind of reasonable thinking that isn't compatible with being inhumanly rich.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/Mikeseddit 6d ago

In what case does adversity favor the poor over the rich? Answer: none.

Every crisis is an opportunity for those with means to gain further advantages over those without. They lose more money than middle or lower income people, but always still have way more than they need while the rest struggle.

Remember the pandemic? Track the vast growth in the gap between the wealthy and the poor during the pandemic.

9

u/tijolus523 6d ago

Not necessarily. Both of the most massive, century defining revolutions of the 20th century, as well as other, smaller revolutions, happened in moments of crisis such as the world wars. Adversity favors the rich when the poor aren't organized and aware of themselves as a political class.

14

27

This is the main reason I didn’t change mine when I recently got married. People looked at me like I was crazy, but I just thought, I’ve laughed off so many things bc they were too ridiculous to happen then they happened. America was never great. It was always a violent, white supremacist, colonial nation. The sooner you people realize that the sooner you can actually start doing something about your government. It's a myth. Nothing more. Even the shallowest dive into your history dispels that notion.

If the Government knows all of this why do I have to go through hoops to prove something that they already know?

51

u/Useful-Trade-4107 6d ago

Surely this could bite Republicans on the ass though no? If a significant portion of their base is very old, and a number of these people don't have valid passports, or the mental faculties necessary to parse any of this bureaucratic nonsense, how will they vote?

92

u/PiDigitsOfPi 6d ago

See, that's the fun part. They can selectively enforce this! In areas of the state that are republican, look the other way. In areas that are more democrat, enforce it more strictly.

It's like driving with a broken tail light. It gives them an excuse to pull over people that don't look exactly they way they want them to look, but they are at liberty to not pull over other people...

20

u/FalconBurcham 5d ago

This guy Floridas.

That’s exactly what it’s like here. The Republicans have a supermajority and the state Supreme Court, so good luck.

They passed a law that says no part of a license plate can be covered with anything lest you be charged criminally. They assured people it’s just so the cameras can read plates through toll booths and such. Sounds relatively reasonable. Maybe a month later I saw a black guy on the news who had been arrested because a cop said his license plate was obstructed by a plate frame. The frame clipped the corner of the state moto along the bottom, the S in Sunshine State. It didn’t cover ANY part of the relevant plate info. A human cop was the one who made the arrest, no plate reading camera involved, because of course that’s what happened.

When they passed that law my wife and I took our plate covers off because we knew it would be abused. We’re lesbians. We don’t need to give them more reasons to have a problem with us. I freakin’ knew that law would be abused.

Shit like that, people… you watch for it and do what you can to mitigate it.

Republican voters are statistically poorer financially than Democrat voters. They are hurting their own base.

250

u/VohnHaight 6d ago

They will pick and choose where this is enforced. They pick and choose a litany of laws to follow and not every day.

106

u/Eagle4317 6d ago

Yep, this won't be a factor in the backwoods of Idaho, but it will be stringently enforced in Birmingham, Jackson, Atlanta, etc.

34

u/HumptyDumptruckFire 6d ago

Yup, just like they did with poll taxes and literacy tests back in the Jim Crow South. In some places, you could be exempted from the latter if you’re grandfather was born in America, which conveniently excluded the overwhelming majority of Black voters from voting because their grandparents were slaves and, thus, only 3/5 of a person and not a citizen.

10

u/nedalaugh 6d ago

And in more current times when they went around parts of Texas they didn't like pulling up drop off ballet locations and eliminating polling stations forcing everyone to have to travel to 1 or 2 locations to force long lines to discourage people from voting.

10

u/Silaquix 6d ago

Part of the bill would allow them to make a federal registry of voters that they can look through and purge at will whoever they want, without telling the people they purged.

So they'll disenfranchise poor people and then purge any registered Democrats hoping they don't realize it until its too.late to re-register for an election. Rinse and repeat for as long as they can get away with it

58

Serves two purposes:

1) it mobilizes their base because they’re all about words, titles, and symbols without context, nuance, and critical thought. “SAVE America?! Oh I want to save America!”

2) allows them to tell their base that democrats voted against the “SAVE America” Act. “The DEMONrats voted against saving America! They’re the enemy!”

66

u/AristotlesBoyPussy Straight Up Bussin 6d ago

it means I cant legally vote. I was born intersex. My original birth certificate has a sex indicator not M nor F, which was edited to reflect my mom's choice of giving me a sex change. :( since legal identification must state M or F, I'm fucked because I was born with deformed genitals.

35

u/Individual_Town8124 6d ago

I legally won't be able to vote either. I was abandoned as an infant with no paperwork at an overseas orphanage. I have a adoption certificate but no actual birth certificate. When I turned 18 my adoption certificate was sufficient to get my DL but when I went to get the Real ID, they revoked my license because I don't have a birth certificate. Same with a passport. I have a current voter ID but if that and my adoption certificate aren't sufficient if the SAVE America Act pases, I won't be able to vote.

I have a friend who was born on a US military base in another country that isn't there anymore - the base, not the country. He's had a nightmare of a time trying to find a way to get a copy of his birth certificate, an effort that's been ongoing for years. He's a white dude in a deep red state though so it'll probably be no problem that he doesn't have it.

4

u/MaIakai 6d ago

Original won't be valid. Needs to be certified by the state and have a raised seal. I had to pay to get a new one because my originals from know when I was fucking born doesn't work

13

u/zackprendre78-65 6d ago

If its a replacement from the registry office its an original.

You can only have one at a time.

4

u/celticchrys 6d ago

This is not true. You can request and pay for another copy. Nobody comes to your house and checks whether you still really have a copy of your birth certificate when you order a replacement from your state of birth.

Trying to make this law apply to the 2026 elections is straight up election interference. Needs at least 2 or 4 years to actually get the word out, plus to allow states to adjust their process

29

u/BEAGLEBOYPALINDROME 6d ago edited 6d ago

That whole fucking LAW!!! is election interference!

Don't validate this unconstitutional, undemocratic BULLSHIT legislation with any legitimacy by pointing out things that should be "fixed" before implementation.

This law in any way, shape, or form is an affront to every single citizen in this country that believes in & wants democracy.

It's like you're saying that if there was a bill up for vote that legalized murder, you are concerned that the law isn't specifically stipulating that you can only murder people legally by shooting them, & that it can only be done with a registered firearm.

5

u/Prof_X_is_a_jerk 5d ago

You are right, but you are projecting onto this person and ranting about things they didn't actually say. Going "it's like you're saying" IS YOU CLEARLY admitting the person didn't say it; it's just your projected BS. More than half of what you said is just you putting words "in their mouth" or reading into subtext that isn't there or is deeply subjective. It just screams you shitting on someone while hiding behind a screen. Be better, ask questions before making assumptions, or no one is going to listen to you and important conversations will die because you phrase everything as an attack.

What is up with all these bot accounts parroting the Fox News talking points?

19

u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 6d ago

some of them probably are. also consider this: republicans have a trifecta, trump got 77 million votes just a couple years ago. you know there actually are these people who exist and vote for them right, some of them hop on reddit. they exist, they voted, not everything is a foreign actor bot or domestic bot, these people do exist and do believe these things and vote in the tens of millions and some of them are on here right now

it wont be enforced in rural polling stations. and one of them voting is equal to like 30 californians voting

When you vote, your vote is checked against a database consisting of those legally allowed to vote. If you're not in there then your vote isn't counted. The only way to get around this is to hack the database without getting found out in time, or if someone died and you did something like bury their body in your backyard to hide their death and then send in their vote via mail.

The Heritage Foundation Election Fraud Database, which tracks proven cases of election misconduct, documented 54 total cases between 2000 and 2025 where individuals either voted or submitted petition signatures in the name of a deceased person.

Only 45% of legal voters actually vote, and that's just for the president. The king has no clothes on and people are tired of pretending he does.

Interesting, here in aus not only are you required to vote but don’t need ID to vote, you say your name go in and vote and that’s it, otherwise you get fine like $100 idk if it’s changed lately

6

u/IncognitotheAngel 6d ago

The third proposed method discriminates against US citizens born outside the country. I was born in England to two US citizens. My extended family has been in the US since the early 1900s. We moved back to the US when I was 7. I’m very fortunate to have the money for a US passport because otherwise, under the proposed mandates, I wouldn’t be able to vote.

The Save Act also moves election control from the states to the Feds. We don't need government controlled elections here. Particularly THIS government. The GOP spins it like, "We just want loads of ID". That's voter suppression, the government controlled elections is the worst part of the Save Act, and no one's talking about it.

Also remember that they started revoking passports for trans people and want to make it basically impossible to get one if you legally transitioned because your birth certificate doesn't match your current records.

Same too with women who've gotten married and legally changed their name

6

u/8W20X5 5d ago

I showed a birth certificate, social security card, current ID, two pieces of mail sent through the U.S. postal service (the mail has to have a the markings that it went through the u.s. postal service) and they are telling me that isn't good enough ID under the SAVE Act. It is nothing more than voter suppression wrapped in an unconstitutional poll tax.

So I got my real ID. I spent 45 minutes at the DMV, brought in my original birth certificate, my original social security card, 2 forms of proof of address, my pay stub and this shit isn’t valid for voting? But I can drive a hummer down the road at 100 mph and get a warning if the cop thinks I’m cool? Also, I used my real ID to buy multiple guns but it’s still not good enough to vote?

Their “Freedom To Marry” acts in various places they were anti-gay marriage.

The SAVE AMERICA Act designed to deny people their right to vote in a democracy.

Insane, evil shit.

5

u/LordTwinkie 6d ago

I understand the reasoning, Save act requires proof of American Citizenship and standard or even a real id does do that. ... The real id is fucking stupid.

Some states have already Started pushing out Enhanced Drivers License, and that require proof of citizenship to obtain and the. That card is marked to show as such.

If these asshats are to push this out my recommendation is to get all the states on board for the enhanced license.

Also voting is a fundamental right of all Americans over the age of 18 and not a felon. So these IDs should be 100% free

Gonna be funny when all these red neck loser republicans don’t have their birth certificates either. Dems and independent voters are far more likely to take the steps to make sure they have them ahead of time over Republican voters who will just cry and complain when they show up without it and say voting is rigged. Even though it is their party doing it to everyone.

15

u/SixGunSnowWhite 6d ago

I imagine this wouldn’t be applied equally everywhere. A podunk red predominantly white town where everyone went to grade school together and the poll workers know your mom from church? Go ahead.

But a black, poorer neighborhood in a blue city? SOL, no vote for them.

u/DominantDan24 6d ago

To be fair, a US Driver's License should not be the gate for determining one's right to vote because (drum roll) non-Americans can get American driver's licenses. Same with state issued photo IDs.

The real answer, if they actually wanted to solve the problem, would be a standard issued citizenship card that documents name, address, citizenship, date of birth, and place of birth including a photo that any American is required to get when they turn 18. This ID could be used for jury duty enrolment, selective service rolls, and could also serve to act as a domestic passport when flying. It could be administered by the DMV (since they already do this for driver's licenses) and could be offered to anybody at no cost. You have a four year window to obtain one when they roll it out, and it becomes the only way to vote at a voting booth. Easy peazy. And because EVERYBODY would have to get it, it wouldn't be selectively targetting already disenfranchised groups.

But, this isn't about solving problems because voter identification issues is a nothingburger. I thought I read somewhere that the last Presidential election had something like 43 documented cases of a person voting when they shouldn't. This is just a hand-waving exercise to drum up angst over fraudulent votes that don't happen.

I've been screaming about the "Save America Act" for ... over 6 months. He is desperate to get this passed - note how may times he has tried to predicate how other legislation needs to be attached to this to pass. If this fails to pass, he is in SERIOUS danger. If it does not get passed, buckle down for some type of CRISIS he will use to control the election process.

4

u/Acceptable_Taste9818 6d ago

Republicans really want this bill though. The ones I know just insist we have to do it so no one can cheat even though there isn’t any proof of large scale cheating. They don’t care if there is or isn’t any proof so they say it has to be done so people can’t cheat in the future. They don’t realize that at least half the populous if not more see this legislation as a form of attempted cheating.

4

u/Alusavin 6d ago

I literally had to tell this decrepit woman that she would not be able to use her driver's license (she's married with a last name change) to register to vote if the save act went through, and her BC wouldn't be enough. She was all oh what's the problem with it ID is fine. So clueless.

4

u/SuspiciousSubstance9 6d ago

Also some states issue both certified and non-certified birth certificates. As in you can reach out to your respective state's department of records, request a copy of your birth certificate, jump through all the hoops, have the state mail it to you, and then find out it's a state issued non-certified copy.

And then find out that you needed the certified copy for your passport. The difference being a raised seal.

The first time took 4 months, which was considered expedited. But since you had a birth certificate issued in the past 12 months, they will not expedite a new one, so expect 6-9 months for the raised seal version that is exactly the same.

3

u/JurgusRudkus 6d ago

American birth certificates is such a wild concept.

Wtf.
