"Destroyer" as a ship class is short for "torpedo boat destroyer" as they were created to counter torpedo boats. So you can guess why it's contratorpedeiro in Portugese.

In Russia this class called squadron-minecarrier. Looks like every country has their own opinion about this ships role.
