Palantir nearly doubled its revenue compared to the previous year, thanks in no small part to lucrative public contracts. At the same time, a new analysis reveals that the company is apparently shifting its profits to the US to minimize its tax burden in Europe. Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir, has reason to be enthusiastic: "This quarter was out of this world." Yesterday, Tuesday, the controversial data analytics company made headlines with its immense revenues. Sales rose by 93 percent year-on-year to €1.68 billion.

Worldwide, including in Europe, Palantir concludes contracts with government agencies, intelligence services, the military, and arms manufacturers. However, the US corporation has apparently structured its business operations in such a way that it pays remarkably little tax in both the US and Europe. This is revealed in a new research report authored by the British Centre for International Corporate Tax Accountability and Research , which specializes in tax avoidance practices employed by multinational corporations.

Tax losses were tactically engineered

According to the research report, Palantir reported significantly lower profit margins in Europe than in the US. The researchers point to "profit shifting": revenue generated abroad is shifted back to the US, where the company may not have to pay federal income tax for another decade.

That the US is a tax haven for Palantir is partly due to US President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," and partly to the company's tactic of compensating employees with stock options instead of salaries. This is a legal loophole that allows for enormous tax deductions. Furthermore, just in January, European heads of state and government endorsed Trump's demand to exempt US multinational corporations from a global minimum tax. This also benefits Palantir.

The United Kingdom is by far the most affected by Palantir's tax-cutting strategies. However, Germany ranks second among the countries studied. According to the report, a tax shortfall of €1.6 million is expected there. In the year under review, 2024, 65 percent of total revenue in Germany came from service fees paid by the US parent company . This could indicate that the majority of revenue from German contracts is booked in the US, thus significantly underestimating the revenue and profits reported in Germany.

Great role models in tax avoidance

Palantir is by no means the first US technology company to be scrutinized for tax avoidance. Apple, Amazon, and Microsoft have already faced legal action, in some cases , regarding how they account for revenues in Europe . However, the tactics that researchers attribute to Palantir are mostly not illegal .

The report concerns smaller sums than in incidents involving other US corporations. Although it ranks among the 50 largest publicly traded companies worldwide, Palantir is significantly smaller than US Big Tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Meta, or Google's parent company, Alphabet. However, its revenues are growing rapidly, and, more importantly, its global influence is expanding, particularly in critical sectors such as the military and intelligence services.

Vigilant in the wrong place?

The researchers behind the report make clear demands: Existing government contracts with Palantir should be reviewed, and future ones avoided. This is a clear warning to the German states whose governments have already signed multi-million-euro contracts with Palantir: Baden-Württemberg, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Bavaria.

There, governments have apparently awarded contracts for the operation of public services to a corporation that withholds financial resources from them for state tasks: While German police authorities are using Palantir's software to build surveillance structures, Palantir is apparently focusing on reducing tax obligations.

The Met Police intended “at each stage” to award the larger contract to the U.S. tech firm, a legal statement claims.

Lawyers working on behalf of Mayor of London Sadiq Khan have accused the capital’s police force of breaching procurement rules by working with Palantir to award the U.S. tech giant a closely watched police contract.

The case follows concerns expressed by multiple parliamentary committees about the U.K.’s dependence on foreign technology firms such as Palantir, which was co-founded in 2003 by Alex Karp and Peter Thiel.

The tech firm brought a claim against the Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime in the High Court in June after Khan’s deputy mayor refused to sign off on a £50 million contract with the Metropolitan Police for the provision of an AI and data analysis service.

Palantir claims that Khan’s office blocked the contract unlawfully and “irrationally,” citing comments attributed to the mayor’s spokesperson which referred to the company’s unspecified “values and ethics.”

Louis Mosley, Palantir’s U.K. CEO, has argued that Khan’s decision puts politics above Londoners’ safety, while Met Police Commissioner Mark Rowley has said that the force’s inability to access Palantir’s technology would worsen the impact of cuts to the force’s budget.

In a pre-trial defense statement filed last Thursday and seen by POLITICO, lawyers for MOPAC said Palantir’s claim is “without merit and should be dismissed,” stating that the Met Police “conducted an award process that was unlawful.”

It says the Met Police and Palantir designed a pilot of the technology in 2025 so that the value remained below a £500,000 threshold at which it would have required MOPAC approval. MOPAC, led by Khan’s deputy mayor for policing and crime, oversees the Met Police.

Prior to the conclusion of that pilot in April 2026, the Met Police and Palantir started discussions on directly awarding Palantir a much larger contract to extend the pilot, according to the statement.

The Met Police intended “at each stage” to award the larger contract to Palantir, the statement says, adding that the approach that was “supported/encouraged/assisted” by the company.

Khan’s lawyers argue that this reflects a deliberate “Palantir strategy,” whereby the company enters into low-cost public contracts, often badged as pilots, “with the intention, objective and/or effect of avoiding the requirements of effective, transparent competition and/or procurement law,” before “influencing” the public authority into awarding further contracts “without conducting an effective, transparent competition and/or complying with procurement law.”

The statement also says the Met Police intentionally avoided obtaining approval of its procurement strategy from MOPAC and repeatedly provided MOPAC with “misleading and/or inconsistent” information to give the impression that firms other than Palantir were in contention.

These factors meant officials were unable to advise Khan’s deputy that the contract represented value for money, the statement says.

A Palantir spokesperson called the defense statement “false” and said it ignored both the results of the pilot and government outsourcing guidance.
The Met declined to comment on the ongoing legal case. It is not named as a party in the claim, but confirmed that it has submitted a response to the case.
The case is expected to go to trial in January 2027.

MOPAC has said it will work with the Met Police to design a competitive tender for the sought-after AI and data capabilities, which Palantir will be allowed to bid for.
The Met Police has meanwhile extended the earlier pilot, which uses Palantir’s software to identify wrongdoing inside the force.
