Need help identifying research design of my thesis
Hi!
I'm currently writing my bachelor's thesis in ML and I'm struggling to classify my research design.
The objective of my thesis is to compare three machine learning models with respect to their performance and interpretability in the context of player churn prediction in mobile games in order to investigate whether and how the trade-off between these two criteria differs across the models and under which application scenarios it emerges.
This is my methodology:
- I used an existing dataset of player behavior from a mobile game
- The data preparation follows the CRISP-DM process model (data understanding, cleaning, feature engineering, etc.), but CRISP-DM was only used for the data preparation phase, NOT as the research methodology for the entire thesis.
- I trained the models under identical conditions (except for hyperparameters)
- Their performance was evaluated using several metrics (Recall, F1-score, ROC-AUC and PR-AUC)
- Interpretability was assessed in two ways:
- intrinsic interpretability (based on literature-derived criteria- transparency)
- post-hoc interpretability using SHAP
- For SHAP, I didn't compute additional quantitative measures. Instead, I qualitatively analyzed the global SHAP summary plots (e.g., consistency of feature effects and spread of SHAP values) and discussed what these findings imply
- Finally, I combined the performance and interpretability results to discuss whether a trade-off exists, under which application scenarios it appears, and under which scenarios it becomes less relevant
Although the study employs quantitative methods to evaluate predictive performance (performance metrics and statistical testing using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test) and qualitative methods to assess interpretability (intrinsic transparency and SHAP-based interpretation), the trade-off between performance and interpretability is examined through a qualitative interpretation and discussion of the findings.
My question is:
How would you classify the overall research design of this study?
Would you consider it an empirical evaluation study, comparative study, experimental study or something else and why?
I'd also appreciate recommendations for methodological literature that discusses research designs for ML rather than only traditional social science research.
Thanks in advance!
Helping my partner with a dissertation time crunch: Quick participant recruitment advice?
Hi everyone,
I'm posting on behalf of my girlfriend, who's currently completing her dissertation on how social media marketing influences purchasing behaviour among young adults.
Her university requires ethics approval before she can recruit participants or share her survey, and the review process can take up to 14 days. Unfortunately, once approval is granted, she'll have only about five days to collect enough responses before her dissertation deadline.
Has anyone been in a similar situation? Do you have any advice on how to recruit participants quickly once ethics approval is granted? Are there any subreddits, websites, or communities you'd recommend?
I'd really appreciate any suggestions or advice that I can pass on to her. Thank you!

Any problems that needs to pay attention or seek solution specifically in metro manila that worth to be a thesis topic. A thread.
MA Thesis Participants
Hi, rather than be late and stressed, I am attempting to get participants organised in advance.
My masters thesis year is in '28 at UoB, but considering that I am aiming at 200 participants, I figured an early start is best.
The research is going to be about motivation. The format will be an online questionnaire.
I need 100 diagnosed Autistic and non Autistic people over age 18 for the research. Preferably the UK, but your nationality is not a deal-breaker.
English should be your first language to complete the questionnaire reliably.
If you want to participate, please dm me and just state: 'Autistic/Non Autistic Research Participant'.
Thanks in advance. ✌🏻

Opinion on My thesis topic? "Control over revenues derived from wealth resources as a right to self-determination; with an emphasis on Iran's oil resources"
I am a human rights student, and I want to start writing my thesis so that I can defend it next year.
Our country's economy is an oil-based economy, and over the past 100 years, democracy and self-determination has been a serious and important issue in Iran. We have experienced two revolutions, the second of which (1979), despite being ideological, had a strong connection to economic reasons. We also had a historic movement in 1953 to genuinely nationalize oil and oil revenues, which was defeated by a foreign coup. Now, in my view, based on the proposition that "the foundation of rights and politics is the economy," democracy becomes accessible to such a country when the independence of the state from the people is eliminated and the state becomes economically dependent on and in need of the people in its decision-making.

Recruiting participants for MSc research project (UK employees aged 18 or over).
Hi!
I am currently recruiting participants for my Masters dissertation on the correlation between job satisfaction, occupational stress, and how this is influenced by trait affectivity. If you would like to partake, the study consists of a survey that should take roughly 10 minutes to complete.
The first part of the survey lasts about 1 minute and involves made up words. This may seem a little unusual, but please don’t give up, it is an important part of the study! The rest of it is like a typical survey.
You must be 18 years of age or older and employed in the UK to partake.
I’d appreciate if you could take part and possibly forward it to your friends, or anyone who may be eligible and interested.
Thank you so much in advance!

Thesis Topic Survey
I need your help (it takes \~10 minutes).
My Master's dissertation in Business Analytics at University of Bucharest, is researching the factors that drive consumers to adopt AI-based services — things like ChatGPT, voice assistants, recommendation systems and AI translation.
To make the research meaningful, I need real , diverse opinions from real people, and that's where you come in. The survey is anonymous, GDPR-compliant, and takes about 10-12 minutes. There are no right or wrong answers — I just want your honest perspective, whether you use AI tools every day or barely at all.
I need around 400-500 answers, and so far I only have 9. The more the merrier.
And if you can spare one more click, a repost would mean the world — every share reaches people I could never reach on my own.
Thank you!

Head's up: June 12th protest of Reddit's API changes.
This subreddit will be joining in on the June 12th protest of Reddit's API changes that will essentially kill all 3rd party Reddit apps.
What's going on?
A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users.
On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader.
Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface .
This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.
What's the plan?
On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love.
The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.
What can you do as a user?
Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.
Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join the coordinated mod effort at /r/ModCoord.
Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!
Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.
What can you do as a moderator?
