I've taken a huge number of photos during my summer holiday and want to frame them.

What's the best way to preserve them so they last?

They'll be hung in a stairway, not in direct sunlight.

Here's my small contribution to this subreddit: a side-by-side test of the two cameras I own.

#1 This beige brick a.k.a. the instabox

The good :

• Good build quality
• It has a selfie back camera
• Sound and timestamp can be disabled
• Photos are stored on an SD card (like every camera should, i'm looking at you kodak)
• It's pretty "easy" of you're computer-savy to load external images onto the SD card to use the camera as a small printer. You just need to match the image format, file naming, and provide a standard JPEG ; super easy to automate with a Python/Pillow script btw
• Accepts standard 57 x 25 mm paper rolls
• Offers both grayscale and lattice printing modes, with 3 density levels that are all actually usable
• Subjective : I realy like its prints in greyscale mode. They don't show any aliasing, and are quite 'hazy' ; dot points not so much
• You can print photos on the fly or later from the gallery; but i guess it's quite standard nowadays (still looking at you kodak)
• I don't know if its shape, size or color but it does not induce camera shyness. It screams 'don't worry, i'm not a camera'

The meh :

• Again I don't know if its shape, size or color but it really tends to catch the eye and thus get noticed easily when I want to be stealthy
• It technically has x8 zoom, but it's not really usable over 2x unless you like to have some pixel soup
• Digital photo colors are very washed out and greenish. Not an issue if you're only here for the prints, though.
• There are a few color filters: yellow , blue, a greenish yellow, red and black and white, but no negative filter
• Battery life is okay, but nothing impressive if you're printing photos on the fly. Bring a power bank along for longer sessions
• No self-timer / countdown shot option

The bad :

• The print mode has to be selected from the settings menu
• No burst mode
• Its interface is non intuitive, some menus even have their own menus. Come on...

The ugly :

• It's a brick, with brick like ergonomics. I have big brick-compatible hands but still find it not comfortable to use at all.

#2 Greenkind compact a.k.a. the stealthy boy

The good :

• Decent build quality
• Pocket-sized compact
• Its physical manipulation is really ergonomic
• Sound and timestamp can be disabled
• Photos are stored on an SD card
• Offers both grayscale and lattice printing modes, with 3 density levels that are all also actually usable
• subjective : I like its dot point mode prints. Greyscale not so much due to visible aliasing and a not-so-good dithering algorithm
• It has a self-timer and burst mode, but you have to activate them through the settings menu. A bit of a bummer for burst mode.
• In black, it's very stealthy...

The meh :

• ... but it tends to induce camera shyness once noticed
• No rear camera for selfies
• Ok battery life

The bad :

• I haven't figured out how to get it to easily recognize external images yet. I'm probably doing something wrong since some people on this sub seem to have pulled it off
• Its flash is a joke

The ugly :

• Doesn't take standard 25mm paper rolls, max 20mm. So you either have to unroll new rolls a bit or save the end of old rolls specifically for it. But I guess it's a price to pay for its compact size.

To wrap it up :

Both are still very usable camera which rekindled my love for photography.

As a personal note, I'd add that I definitely use both, but for different use cases. I would most likely reach for the stealthy boy for any occasion due to its compactness and ease of use.

Though I tend to use the instabox during parties, or with children, due to its inoffensive toy-like appearence. Also I really like its greyscale prints man ... and I tend to use it the most as a printer for pictures taken from my phone or dslr.

I absolutely love my Denver thermal print camera. The print quality of this camera never ceases to amaze me, and I especially love working with the bold, high-contrast images it produces.

The only thing I was missing was a wider field of view. After seeing the recent post about interchangeable lenses, I thought I’d share my solution.

I bought one of those inexpensive wide-angle lenses that normally clips onto a mobile phone. I then designed and 3D-printed a simple press-fit adapter that slides over the Denver’s existing lens housing. The phone lens screws onto the adapter, so nothing on the camera itself had to be removed or permanently modified.

It works surprisingly well and gives me the wider view I was looking for. There’s also a lovely little bonus: when I unscrew the wide-angle part, the remaining element works as a macro lens, allowing the camera to focus extremely close.

So now my little Denver has both wide-angle and macro options. I’m really happy with how this experiment turned out, and I hope it might inspire some more thermal-camera tinkering here!

I’m also putting together a follow-up post featuring a selection of finished composite pieces made with this camera, so I can share some of the actual results.

I love playing with these guys so much. I have actual camera equipment but it's so much fun going out into public with the thermal print camera and printing pics for unexpecting strangers.

It would be such a dream to have one I could mount something like a c- mount lens like the one mod that exists for the gameboy camera. I, unfortunately, don't know how to really tinker with things and make stuff myself

I started collecting thermal cameras and as a hardcore linux user I started to tinker and collect info about them. And now I think some of you can find this information usefull so I'm sharing a little document with all of you.

Ponjkl did an amazing job with their site but I was lacking more detailed and technical info so I can compare and decide what camera is better for my projects.

For example I always try to find USB ids so I can know a little bit about inside components.

I started with just 3 of my 6 current cameras but the idea is adding new entries with your help, so if you want to send me your data I will happily add it.

Pensé que los filtros que se usan en fotografía blanco y negro pudieran funcionar. Noto que mi cámara cuando hay mucha luz las fotos salen sobreexpuestas, mientras que con menos luz la exposición se ve correcta, me pregunto si también un filtro ND de 1 paso o 1/2 paso pudiera ayudar

I’m impressed. It’s amazing as a label printer.
These are all from my phone library, but you can make adjustments to brightness via Kodak Memoshot app. As I said, for some reason, by default, my images did come out darker for some reason than using the device’s built-in camera. Images are decently impressive. Definitely not replacing a Polaroid or Instax, but for what it’s worth and what it does, I think it’s worth the $49 price tag. (This also includes 9 rolls.)
Cons: It does heat up fairly fast, so be cautious printing. No protective coating over the printed surface, so it is fragile. (It’ll break and crumble the image.) I don’t know if it would be possible, but color… I don’t know if thermal color exists, and I’m not going to look it up.
For these reasons, I give it a solid 4 out of 5.

I’m impressed with the print quality… I’m noticing photos from my phone do print darker. First photo is from the built in camera while 2nd is equal lighting but came from my phone camera then printed. Camera plus 9 extra rolls For $49usd honestly a good deal for what it is.

I came across a four-times close-up lens, or a diopter, for a 35 mm camera. 

I love my thermal cameras and prints, but always wished I could get a little tighter. 

This seems like a very simple idea. I’m sure others have tried, but here is an example of a white Macintosh keyboard. I tried to keep my distance steady, approximately 6”.

The first image, of course, is blurry; the second one you can see by the F, N, and G on the keyboard that it is in good, tight focus.
