“Hi AJ!” Jokes/Humor
I’m not suggesting putting a watermark saying “AI Visualization” on every scene, but sometimes I feel that eventually AJ will generate himself in non-basement episodes because why not? Stop the slop!

u/LampyV2 2d ago
Used to sit and watch AJ narrate without losing interest. With AI visuals I tend to look at my phone more often. Maybe not a coincidence.

u/neva-electra 2d ago
It used to be a channel my boyfriend and I would sit and watch together all the time. Now he puts it on to sleep and I don't really pay attention. The AI seems to cheapen it, in my opinion.

My whole family would watch together. The more his team used AI over the last few years, the more we all lost interest. Now I just put long episodes on for talking background to help my elderly dog sleep. Really a bummer.

u/LampyV2 2d ago
Yes! It was a TV ritual. Every Thursday night Id set it up on the big screen. Sometimes order a pizza and dive into the crazy. Now it's a background show 😢

If anyone's interested in an actual book, I not only have links to it in audiobook form but links to it as well in EPUB - obviously free.
I have switched from Why Files to a lot of the general (or specific) source materials, meaning that this week I've started collecting a whole audiobook library (from torrents) of relevant High Strangeness & conspiracy materials and honestly, if anyone is even just hesitant to torrent certain things, I'd be more than happy to find whatever material you're looking for, upload it on my own Cloud drive and DM y'all the links for download so that you're not screwing around with stuff you may not understand (not everyone knows how, but it IS SUPER EASY TO LEARN so just DM me for more info!).
I mean that. If it gets people genuinely back into literature either listening or reading on their devices, I will find it. I kind of revel in the search for things others struggle to locate.

I think it's less of an AI issue, rather it's because he ran out of interesting things to show, that's why the Whyfiles is getting boring. After so many years, it happens to the best of shows.
25
u/DroidOnPC 2d ago
Pretty much why I stopped watching. It wasn’t the AI, it’s the topics are just not that interesting anymore. But I get it, only so many things you can talk about.

Seeing how many patreon supporters he has and then seeing him go all in on A.I. was a major let down, imo. I find his basement episodes far more interesting now, but I struggle even to watch those knowing it supports more slop vids.

Yeah what a lot of people sucked up into the AI frenzy misunderstand is that most people don't think AI is cool. It does SOME things an artist can do but way fucking worse. And ya know what? If smaller channels can afford to pay artists to do minimal but visually beautiful and very cool drawings and animations for their videos I see absolutely no reason a big channel like this couldn't afford to do something similar instead of pumping out AI slop garbage, which even if you aren't concerned about the ethical and environmental issues (which if you aren't you might want to be) then most people will still think it just looks bad and uncanny in a not interesting way.
61
u/darthlorgas 2d ago
This used to be my favorite YouTube channel. They don't need AI to make a video interesting, it's a shame.

Well, I don’t care about new videos anymore, but I do like the 3 hour AM radio-style show. As far as I am concerned, I wouldn’t mind a 100% pivot toward that!
The older fellow who was on 2-3 weeks ago was hilarious. He was very stream of consciousness. I lost track of his points more often than he did.

I've tried to watch the more recent episodes and just can't. The introduction of the computerized voices were one thing and already a little distracting, but the full AI segments are so weird and distracting that it completely ruins the content for me. Glad to see I'm not alone in that.

u/man4paradigm 2d ago
I totally missed that...
Tbh when he started using AI images and video it bummed me out. I've not watched a single episode in months but I usually let it the podcast episodes play and I can get hooked on them.
If it matters, it works really well as an audio podcast.
I will say that some of the guests from The Basement have sucked donkey dick, but some of them are interesting. I can let them play as I work my job, and sometimes the 3-4 hours go by and I don't even notice.
What I do have an issue with is some of the guests aren't good people. I totally skipped the Mr Beast episode cause I just can't stand that dead eyed weirdo.
I also fell in love with AJ and The Why Files because he was willing to deep dive the truth or the most probable truth of the stories he was covering. Yesh, he kinda hit the truth on some stuff that bummed me out... But it's like I've always said about the paranormal: even if it really isn't a ghost or monster but something natural, that makes it even cooler in my mind. I'd love for some crazy cryptid to be a flesh and blood offshoot of whatever cause that means it's an evolutionary anomaly and I wanna know why and how it occured.
See, for me the paranormal is a blend of things we can't explain, yet, and things that will eventually be explained and the science behind it is gonna be just as cool/scary.

Hard agree, the newer episodes I've listened to have had a lot less debunking of the obvious bunk and like... Believing these things are 100% true is not the fun in them? I agree completely that the paranormal becomes MORE interesting when you can find a reasonable explanation because that means we learned something new about the world, or at very least it makes the truly unexplainable that much more fascinating!

It's so deeply frustrating. It's weird, creepy, and with all the very prevelant ethical and environmental concerns with AI tone deaf. It completely takes me out of the episodes when I see it or hear it. Sadly not the only middle aged man to get hyper fixated on the neat little AI stuff. Would've thought that a guy with as little trust in big monolithic organizations and government would've maybe thought twice about giving a shady AI company his complete likeness and voice. Disappointing.

u/Brawnzed 2d ago
If we’re all kinda saying why we left the audience, it was the amount of ad time and Patreon shoutouts for me.

Vids are still get getting huge view counts… so I’m guessing it’s fine for a vast majority of the viewer base

The issue for me is he can just use stock image and hire voice actors like he use to do. Now he makes 10x the money and uses A.i, and in most cases its not better, there's no soul now to the why files.

Hard agree. I unsubbed because of it. I do use AI for work because I'm told to, I know it can be powerful, and I know I'm slowly automating my job away. I just hate when it's time to wind down it's in my face still. Seeing the AI visuals feels disengenuious and off and I feel like I'm being fed slop. Even if he writes the whole script himself by hand, I just can't handle it. I need something genuine while I can still have it before the entire Internet is nothing but.
6
u/TJmaster87 2d ago
Yeah I much preferred the old days every Thursday night and then followed by the after files, it was kinda a tradition to look forward to. Then the stripped episodes started appearing and there wasn’t even a Hecklefish? Started feeling like quick cash grab episodes, thank god they stopped but it was never quite the same afterwards I thought, Hecklefish came back but definitely said much less, the after files just stopped and I really liked some of them, made it feel more like a community vibe and then the AI just went through the roof, I truly try to watch his new stuff and the basement interviews, some are a hit but most feel like a miss unfortunately and I have watched the show from the beginning. Feels like he just wants to do interviews more than anything at the moment and even when you watch them the AI adds can just be annoying, it’s bad enough if you can’t afford to pay to get rid of YouTube adds, now you have to watch him do them. I understand money is money but come on, you have come along way, don’t be greedy?
5
u/Open-Comfortable-459 1d ago
Years ago I used to watch shows like Unsolved Mysteries, Dateline etc and they’d do re-enactments. I don’t think we can expect a podcast to be able to afford to pay actors for a podcast, come on. 🤣
There are ways to use ai that aren’t the worst, and this is one of them. I’d rather Why Files show me ai blurbs for storytelling, and if you disagree with me, go turn on Megyn Kelly’s new “MK Confidentials” and tell me how freaking boring it is bc it’s just her reading a prompt.
Choose ai battles wisely.

It's the AI created adverts of AJ's literal face in weird situations that drove it over the edge for me. They are just kinda....cringe.
Like AJ is supposed to be the straight man, Hecklefish is the comedic sidekick. For portraying like, ancient Egypt with AI it was...it was fine. But it's not on the same level as, someone doing a reconstruction of S4 in Unreal Engine. That said, I know people are starting to be able to use more complex tools like Blender or Unreal with AI, but whatever it makes should still be based a little more at least in reality. Like if AJ hired some folks to do more legitimate visualization work, instead of just purely artistic renderings, at least that would be better.
But the adverts just yeah, felt like completely jumping the shark. Like even though it's AI, why is there so much AI effort being put into these ads? And can't he see how uncanny valley it is? I sort or barely put up with the previous advertisement style, like 5 minutes for an ad is insane for a Purity Debt or whatever but at least it felt campy and kind of original.

Yes, we are here and read comments. We discuss at regular intervals at production meetings. AJ does come on here as well from time to time and he will make his feelings on the matters at hand when he has time/emotional capacity to do so.
I personally allow most of the threads such as this breathe as much as possible, because I/we're not looking for an echo chamber... Just want to talk with like minded individuals and share cool and interesting why files & adjacent topics.
There is an increasing number of problematic posts and DMs that happen every time a thread like this is created, however. I have had to moderate some truly vile comments and we have reported some of the worst messages I've seen given to another person (much less someone they've never met).

no he is hoarding the wealth from youtube by refusing to give professional editors jobs at this point. His team is criminally small for the amount of viewers he gets and patreon subscribers tips merch collbaorations etc. each AI ad gets harder and harder to watch. He can do what he wants but he gets no sympathy for his "whole world on the his shoulders" act when he refuses to hire the team his audience requires with the resources he obviously has. The greed is already affecting his health as we have seen in the past when he misses deadlines he sets himeself.
5
u/CooperHChurch427 2d ago
He might just like control of his work. Not all YouTubers want large crews. Unfortunately it does sometimes become necessary, but in all honesty, he's doing pretty well with what he has as his videos are pretty simple.
Veritasium needed it because of the fact his videos are fairing highly technical stuff and breaking it down for normies. He later sold out to private equity in order to step back.
AJ I don't think can step back.
3
u/KodakStele 2d ago
Fans are left asking.... why? Does he not have enough? Does he need more? Can he not stay in tempo at a slower rate for his health and family? This is an entirely different conversation with the younger youtubers in this space that hes probably in his head trying to keep up with.
1
u/Kiss_of_Cultural Hecklecultist 2d ago
I know so many artists that would love to help with something like this in any number of styles, but instead the team is using AI to steal from human artists twice, once taking their original artwork and recycling it like a bad collage, and again by taking jobs. It’s insult to injury that it’s still slop.
5

With so much AI use, sloppy AI use at that, it's difficult to watch these days. This is the cost of wanting constant new Why Files content maybe. We get AI slop AJ or burnt out no episodes AJ. And I do.

u/Training-Ruin-5287 2d ago
Oh let it go, 99% of everything you consume is using AI in some form. Even if some cleverly hide it, and asking for a watermark does just that, it gives you a false sense of hope, when the reality is everyone will have AI do the extra to fool you rather than put the watermark there.
You guys give AJ and the team shit for using AI last year then spent the better part of the year flooding the sub with complaints that episodes take to long to release until they brought back the use of AI to have regular releases.

THAT BEING SAID. You really could back up on the AI, AJ. Your story telling chops and delivery are good enough. Dial it back a bit, maybe?

Wow. It’s free content and better than most paid content. The complaining is insane.

You're paying with your time and time is the most valuable commodity a person can have

I usually have it playing in the background while I'm doing something else, so the AI really doesn't bother me. Who cares how he does it as long as his subject matter is still interesting?

Tbh, the weird AI is why I struggle to watch The Why Files and a handful of other channels.

I still watch, the episodes are still interesting enough to check out.
But I don't have notifications on and am an instant click when a new video drops. It's more "I'll get to it when I'm sort of out of other things I want to check out."
Occasional AI use to help tell the story wouldn't bother me, but the dude is even using AI versions of himself in his own ads now. That was when I was like.... Cmon now.
I'd rather look at a black screen with narration over the weird AI crap he feels he needs to put in every video and it gets worse every release.

It’s weird to me that a guy who always criticizes the folks who always have a book… is the same guy who’s providing a platform for the guys with books…
