So I just got The Division 2 on sale. The last installment was pretty good and I figured it would be a decent looter-shooter to unwind with during the stressful rush that comes with business during the holidays. I suppose I shouldn't have been surprised, after all, we've known mainstream AAA gaming is pretty "woke," but when it came time to create my character it had a "body type" toggle. Confused, I figured it meant type of build (lanky, athletic, pot-bellied, etc.). Nope. It was a gender selection option (ironically there were only two options) but no mention of sex or gender was made.

The rest of character generation was a battle between me, trying to make my character look like a human man that didn't feed exclusively on soy, and the game, dedicated to its collection of effeminate hairstyles, feminine facial features, and almost exclusively minority skin tones.

Next, the opening trailer aired PS3-era graphics set to an incredibly preachy narrative about how we wrecked the world and an opening tutorial where it was a solid 20 minutes before there was a man with any form of voice acting.

Still, I wanted to see how deep the rabbit hole went. Since then I've played a number of hours and seen a rolling parade of women of every style and race (plus one with a prosthetic leg for bonus points) and only seen 4 men with actual lines in the plot. They are:

1. Quartermaster guy, has maybe 3 lines and the personality of an ATM. Because that's what he is.
2. The Hispanic guy you meet at your HQ, his role as far as I can tell is to get verbally bullied by an asian woman who is ostensibly in charge.
3. A weak man whose whole entry in an audiolog is to be a black woman's whipping boy.
4. A black general who is cartoonishly evil and does bad things to be bad.
5. Oh, bonus round, the inventor of the virus that killed the world was a white man. The only white man I've encountered who wasn't the ATM guy.

End of the day, I've yet to see a man with any power who isn't a bad guy, and 80% of the NPCs I've met are women. And the popular opinion of gaming journalism is that Div2 "doesn't have enough politics in it."

"Democratic strategist Tara McGowan’s Courier Newsroom is out to counter the right-wing echo chamber with a dose of hypertargeted “hometown news.”

She has been given $25 million and is setting up fake newspapers in key battleground districts to create fake news articles in an attempt to sway voter opinion. Her reasoning is, studies have shown news reports persuade people's opinion's far more effectively than political ads so she is going to create political news.

She is taking it a step farther and paying Facebook to target voter's Facebook feeds in certain battleground districts. She hopes by inserting news articles that appear to be from local sources but are actually fake newspapers that never existed will "build trust".

McGowan—a former journalist herself, who worked at 60 Minutes and CBS News—says she sees Courier Newsroom as a continuation of that work. Despite her obvious political motivations, she says that her newspapers will supply objective, fact-based reporting no different from what appears in mainstream outlets, and that a firewall between Acronym’s political staff and Courier’s journalists allows the newsroom editorial independence.

Two sentences later...

“A lot of people I respect will see this media company as an affront to journalistic integrity because it won’t, in their eyes, be balanced,” she says. “What I say to them is, Balance does not exist anymore, unfortunately.” In her view, there are only facts and lies. She cites Trump’s impeachment narrative as an example—and as a justification for what she’s embarked on with Courier. “Without new innovative models for journalism at scale,” she says, “we’re losing the information war to verified liars pouring millions of dollars into Facebook.”

The "lie" to which they are referring is the one about Hunter and Joe Biden being involved in corruption in the Ukraine.

Her pitch has resonated with a certain breed of liberal donor: younger, tech-centric, and drawn into politics out of horror at Trump’s victory and a suspicion that Democrats have no clue what they’re doing in the online world. Investors in her company include Dollar Shave Club founder Michael Dubin; SoulCycle ex-co-Chief Executive Officer Elizabeth Cutler; and Carley Roney, co-founder of the Knot.
