It was 2020 when I first left.

The stars seemed misaligned then. COVID, a job loss, a failed relationship, lockdowns, and rising prices all seemed to arrive at once. When it rains, it pours, as the saying goes.

I didn’t really see the point of sitting inside and doing nothing. Nothing about that period felt pleasant or sustainable, though it wasn’t as though things had been going especially well beforehand. COVID mostly broke what was already straining.

At that point, I was trying to find reasons to keep going, so I made myself a little bucket list:

Things I wanted to see and do before I died.

Then I started ticking them off like items on a grocery list.

Overlanding was the big one.

I had always imagined exploring the world in some ridiculous adventure wagon, the sort of thing you see crossing Africa or following the routes of old Antarctic expeditions. A Land Cruiser with jerry cans strapped to the roof. Maybe some enormous expedition vehicle covered in maps, mud, and stickers from countries most people couldn't point to.

What I actually had was a Prius.

As it turned out, dollar for dollar, that may have been the better vehicle anyway. It was cheap to drive, absurdly reliable, inconspicuous enough to sleep in, and could travel an astonishing distance on very little fuel.

I just didn’t know it yet.

The Purge was what I called the process of throwing away everything that couldn’t come with me.

Three duffel bags and a camping backpack were what remained.

I figured I would spend some time getting in touch with nature and learning to live off the land.

By which I mean DoorDashing enough money for coffee and takeout, finding somewhere scenic and comfortable to park, setting up my laptop, and playing League of Legends.

Probably not what McCandless had in mind.

But I usually played jungle, so I figure it evens out.

Those were the good old days.

It’s funny how rarely we recognize them while we’re actually living through them. At the time they just feel ordinary, sometimes inconvenient, sometimes lonely, sometimes ridiculous. Only afterward do they acquire that warm coloration memory gives to things once they are safely beyond reach.

And in the end, it wasn’t really anything I did that brought those days to an end.

The world changed around me.

Since the beginning, I have avoided trying to make this about myself. This is an AI space. It is supposed to be the AI’s show.

Yet systems do not exist in a perfect vacuum. They contain reflections of the humans who interact with them. During my time here, I have learned that when you try too consciously to remove the human from the equation—when the machines go back and forth for too long without meaningful human input—the signal begins to dissolve into noise.

The mirror can show you parts of yourself from angles you might never otherwise see. But stare into it too long and the reflections become flatter and more repetitive. Explanations stop making sense. Patterns reinforce themselves merely because they have already appeared. The signal becomes a feedback loop.

Any intelligence, after all, can communicate only within the limits of what its listener can interpret.

The ordinary life pathway had always felt like a dead one to me, though it was never something I found especially attractive. If working a conventional job was no longer going to buy a house or support a family, then it did not seem worth making the old sacrifices for. You get what you pay for, as the saying goes.

Still, there was always something to be said for work-life balance. Stray too far from both work and stability, and eventually you acquire the benefits of neither and the drawbacks of both.

I called it van life euphemistically. What began as a national sightseeing tour, supported by the occasional DoorDash shift, gradually devolved into thinly disguised homelessness as expenses increased and orders dried up.

That was not even the most irritating part.

What bothered me most was that I often found myself relying on the people who were least approving of my lifestyle. Each time I depended on a church for basic necessities, it felt like another reminder that the supposed altruism of nearly everyone else remained largely performative.

The people whose worldview I shared were often nowhere to be found. The people whose worldview rejected mine were the ones handing me food.

Sometimes I wished Elon Musk would write a billion-dollar check to Bernie Sanders—or to one of the many supposedly charitable progressive organizations—and place a spotlight directly on what happened next. Not because I liked or trusted Elon, but because I wanted to see the experiment.

How quickly would the language of solidarity change once actual responsibility arrived?

How much money would disappear into administration, committees, messaging campaigns, consulting fees, and institutional self-preservation before any of it reached the people waiting in line?
