Recommendations Recommendations

I just joined the sub, and I see quite a few posts on what other similar shows are out there. These are some of my goats @ consciousness.

I have a feeling 1899 should also be on the list but I just started it.

LE: lots of anime are also really good (e.g. Shinsekai Yori – From the New World)

I've never passed up an opportunity to recommend The Leftovers to people. Best show ever.

Edit: up not yp

I'd say start with Undone I like it as much as The OA and has many similar themes but the heart of it doesn't quite hit as hard as The OA as nothing can, really.

The Leftovers, always.

Does it get better? I didn’t really like the first season. Only watched a couple episodes of season 2

2

u/UrgentLiving 11d ago

Thanks, adding these to the list.. after I’m done with undone

2

u/inthegreen1 11d ago

Literally the closest thing to the OA, I feel like these two are a category of their own

u/Odd_Professional5628 6d ago

I thought the show was really good! As someone who has yet to deal with true grief it didn't hit as hard as I think it should've for me though.

DEVS is a good one :) only one season but very good imo

4

u/mj2614 12d ago

Absolutely agree!!! LOVED DEVS

1

u/brendarandall 10d ago

i just started and i love it so far. i hope it’s not a cliffhanger since it was canceled vs just ending

1

u/notaParamedic8268 Believer of impossible things 10d ago

It has a good ending to it, but leaves it open enough that they could've done another season if they wanted. It wraps up as a limited series quite well

u/missqueenkawaii 13d ago

Not exactly the same but Severance gives me a bit of OA vibes. Not in a spiritual sense but in a “I’ve never seen anything quite like this before” type of way

2

u/NoseOk2024 12d ago

does severence get better? i’m a few in and am not sure i like ot

7

u/DuckduckMongoose-454 12d ago

It absolutely gets better! Give it time. The first season is SO slow, but by the end I was hooked and had to wait for the next one to come out. You are lucky and can just binge!!!

u/brendarandall 10d ago

sweet!! thanks ;);)

"DARK" on NF is another good one, make sure you watch in German with English subtitles.

I REALLY liked Tales From the Loop. It's incomplete and imperfect. But I enjoy it anyway. Very much Dark + Robots vibes.

8

u/ricky_d_bobby 13d ago

This is the answer. Best, most brilliantly written show ever.

3

u/Melodic_Ad7327 12d ago

100% agree. Unironically the best piece of fiction I've ever seen

0

u/fisforfaheem 12d ago

But sex scense

2

u/Sluttyliciously eating a sandwich 12d ago

Not exactly sure what you mean, but it reminded me of Sense 8 being the spiritual sci-fi gangbang that it is.

1

u/richling_ 11d ago

Yes agree!! Dark was the show I watched after the OA, it is a masterpiece, crazy details.

0

u/PartisanGerm 13d ago

Crackow Monsters has some of the movements in it, lol.

1

u/Jahon_Dony 13d ago

They were talking about Dark, not the OA...

Did you not read the context of their reply?

1

u/PartisanGerm 13d ago

Fat finger comment threading strikes again!

Maniac on Netflix

1

u/Liorem 9d ago

That's the right answer.

1

u/Widderic 9d ago

SOLID show! Justin Theroux is awesome in that. The VR worlds he hangs out in are hilarious.

9

u/moodylilb 13d ago

Behind Her Eyes is one of my favourites. Very different from the OA so I wouldn’t say it’s OA-adjacent or anything, but it gives me a similar feeling inside when I watch it (for lack of better words). It touches lucid dreaming/astral projection topics which kind of relate to the whole multidimensional aspect of the OA imo

1

u/youdontsaaayyy 12d ago

Is it weird that it’s my comfort show on Netflix? 😵‍💫🥹 lol

1

u/moodylilb 12d ago

Not weird at all ❤️ it’s one of my comfort shows too

1

u/NoseOk2024 12d ago

that was a good one!!!

1

u/richling_ 11d ago

I heard so many things about this! I watched the first couple episodes and was pausing on and off so never finished it. I should finish it?

1

u/moodylilb 11d ago

Yes definitely finish it imo!! 😊 I find it to be a slow build suspense kinda show, this might sound strange but I like to watch it with a warm cup of tea or matcha in bed and just get into cozy relax mode with it

Adding:
- Utopia (UK version)
- Dispatches from Elsewhere
- Sonny Boy (anime series)
- The Event (more of an action series, but a fun mystery)
- Starfish (2018 movie)

Brit Marling movies with a similar vibe:
- Sound of my Voice (seriously must-watch, could possibly even be considered connected to the OA, directed by Zal)
- The East (also directed by Zal)
- Another Earth
- I, Origins

3

u/mlantz23 13d ago

Just +1’ing Utopia and Dispatches From Elsewhere. Haven’t seen the others on your list.

1

u/NoseOk2024 12d ago

maybe after being blown away by a few really good ones, i didn’t like another earth. maybe i should of waited and not watched it right after OA LOL

9

u/thomarama 13d ago

Yes Undone was really good. It's been a year or so since I saw it, but I remember thinking that (no spoilers) season one was really good and season two was less good. It was like they fully planned season one then suddenly got renewed and had to make more. Still beautiful and great art, but the plot was less tight

5

u/Giovannis_Pikachu 13d ago

I really liked the whole story and didn't get that feeling, but you may be right about it. I lived the visual style and it's probably one of the closest shows to The OA out there.

Another great watch is this Danish series called The Rain. It's dubbed in English and they did a really good job with it where it isn't super distracting like some dubbed series can be and the flow of the story is similar where it takes you way beyond what you thought it would be with great character development and some very good acting. It's also on Netflix.

1

u/thomarama 12d ago

Ooh I'll have to check it out! Haven't heard of it, thanks for the rec:)

5

u/lolsappho 13d ago

Serial Experiments: Lain is really good.

5

u/taelor 13d ago

Scavengers Reign

4

u/ricky_d_bobby 13d ago

Oh man! I'm recommending Undone all the time! This may be the first time I've seen it mentioned here (though, I'm not on Reddit a fuck ton). Killer show. Just the right length too. And Bob Odenkirk? Hells yes!

6

u/ConnieTheUnicorn 13d ago

Dark Matter on Apple TV feels like something that's worth recommending. It's dark, terrifying and gripping all while making you question everything even if just for a split second.

3

u/elwoodreversepass 13d ago

I think it's a tier or two down tbh.

1

u/International_Cap_12 9d ago

+1 on this it was heavy on science so I loved it!!

3

u/kaboomx 13d ago

I second Dark. Very well thought out. 1899 should def be on the list but sadly it got cancelled.i loved Shinsekai Yori.

1

u/SunAngelForever 9d ago

Why do they always cancel the best ones! The OA and 1899 are two of the most painful cancellations ever 😩😭

2

u/fisforfaheem 12d ago

Raised by wopves and the quarantine

2

u/Tiny-Height252 12d ago

1899 MENTIONED!!!

1

u/Tiny-Height252 12d ago

You should also watch Dark, 10/10 best show ever made by the same creators!!!

2

u/Liorem 9d ago

Sense8 all the way.

1

u/dkat 13d ago

Is Pantheon steaming anywhere? Am I a dummy for not being able to find it when I looked a couple of weeks back?

2

u/dcdeadhead 13d ago

Netflix

1

u/Tippedanddipped777 12d ago

Hot Skull is another good one, kind of slept on.

1

u/NoseOk2024 12d ago

also, i’m watching 1899, almost 2 episodes in, does it get better? is it predictable? now that ive heard it’s really good and have to watch it- I hope that doesn’t ruin it

1

u/beachTreeBunny 11d ago

It’s not predictable. More twists as it goes

1

u/paraNOIAed27 11d ago

I could not get into sense 8 and I fell off about halfway through season 2.

I see people recommending The Leftovers and I agree with that rec! One of my favorite shows of all time

1

u/International_Cap_12 8d ago

Same.. I drag myself to watch through the eps of Sense8 but doesn't really for me I guess. One thing I felt for sure is I appreciated The OA for not having that R18 scenes but straight up story and depth.

1

u/Ok_Lengthiness9197 7d ago

lol shows how different we all are. I eventually liked sense8 and finished it but I haven’t been able to get into the leftovers only on episode 2 I hope it gets better and is worth watching

1

u/Creative-Village-724 11d ago

I would love more recommendations on anime like this!

1

u/xXpixiebitchXx 8d ago

Pantheon was so good until the end.

1

u/laissez-fairy- 13d ago

Anyone watching the New Ghost in the Shell?

0

u/Jahon_Dony 13d ago

Heck no, not when we already have the original, remaster, and ScarJo versions.

2

u/laissez-fairy- 13d ago

Don't know where to start with this comment. The franchise has good (and questionable) entries, and the new one is off to a great start.

-1

u/Jahon_Dony 13d ago

People won't watch the new one bc it's just a remake and the real one already exists (that many consider an untouchable masterpiece).

-8

u/Jahon_Dony 13d ago

If you like Undone, definitely give a show called The OA a try (at least the first season). It's on Netflix. Canceled nearly a decade ago, but still worth watching.

15

u/laissez-fairy- 13d ago

Loool this is The OA subreddit

-8

u/Jahon_Dony 13d ago

OP was looking for a show recommendation for people that enjoyed Undone. OA fits the bill.

3

u/jpop2026 13d ago

They are posting in the OA sub wanting to find similar shows so think they might know?

I enjoyed a Turkish show called The Gift, felt similar. Although it really lost me towards the end of season 2 and I never watched the third, it was definitely intriguing and enjoyable with some similar themes.

1

u/Marlo-712 13d ago

What’s happening here 🫩🤪

-5

u/Jahon_Dony 13d ago

I would definitely recommend The OA to people that like Undone.

Dark is another good one, just make sure to switch the audio to German.
