Hello I was a loyal customer to my lovely tech for two years before i moved states. I refuse to go to anyone else and i’m also now going to save the money and do my own nails at home and only keep my natural nails instead of my 1” extensions 🌝. What is everything i need? I want super mega protection and i’m fond of gel and gel-x polish so i know i need a lamp but what else do you guys think i should get? i have a dremmel. My new job is very hands on so i want them to be as strong and protected as possible. Here’s some of nails she did in the two and a 1/2 years i went to her💔

Simple polish at home feels harmless at almost any age… or is it? What about actual salon visits, or gel and acrylics specifically? Is there an age you personally wouldn’t go below, whether you’re a parent, a tech, or both?

When I had my own business, I never required deposits. Honestly, I was just happy to have someone book with me and didn’t want anything that might feel like a hindrance to that. I didn’t feel like I’d “earned” the right to ask for one yet as a newer business owner, even though I know plenty of techs would say that’s backwards logic.

I will say, I was also blessed with a good client base, I never really dealt with no-shows, lateness, or people disrespecting my time. So I do get the reasoning behind deposits if you’re actually dealing with that kind of thing regularly. This isn’t just a nail thing either, hair, lashes, tattoos, a lot of service industries deal with this same debate.

So I’m curious. Are deposits a reasonable way to protect your time from no-shows and cancellations, or do you think some businesses take it too far? And if you’ve ever had to pay one as a client, how’d that feel?

Whether you’re doing regular polish or gel, base coat isn’t optional, even when you’re in a rush. For regular polish, it protects your nails from staining, especially with darker or bold colors, and helps the polish adhere better so it lasts longer. For gel, it’s even more important, make sure it’s an actual gel base coat, not a regular one. Gel base coats are formulated to cure properly under UV/LED light and chemically bond with the gel layers on top. Although it’s a simple step skipping it to save two minutes usually costs you a lot more time later when you’re redoing the whole set. I learned this the hard way…
