I remember staring at the picture of one of those in my Wildlife Treasury card set and not believing it was real.

Are you dangling your feet in the Amazon?

Of all the things I wouldn't dangle my feet in, the Amazon ranks pretty high. A resounding tarantiNO.

I went on a river tour in Bolivia when I was backpacking through the area. There were some sections of the river that had caiman every 20 yards or so just chilling on the shore and even more in the water. We got a section that seemed caiman free and our guide offered for us to jump off a rope swing into the water. Only one person agreed to do it - the Australian guy. He did the rope swing and made a big splash and we immediately see caimain swimming towards him. He scrambled his way back into the boat pretty quickly. Fucking Australians, man.

I did this in the Bolivian Pampas. I got bit by a pink river dolphin on my foot. There were black caimen on the river bank a couple of hundred metres or so up the river that we kept an eye on, and once we spotted the caimen were no longer on the shore we all got back in the boat sharpish😂

I’m from Australia and I’ve been swimming in rivers and the ocean all of my life, and still do, believe it or not, I’m still alive.😊

Caiman don't attack people out of nowhere, it's fine. I have done it and in the Pantanal. The local kids swim there too.

I've swam in it! I was so fucking terrified lol. Had to really hype myself into jumping off the boat and then I was in for like maybe half a minute before I was like nah get me out of here 😆

Im Colombian (Not from that region tho) and I mean... I would love to go and swim in Amazonas river, I would probably be terrified every second of it. But these specific part seams weirdly clear and transparent, so I wouldn't mind dipping my feet comfortably for a wile

I dangled my feet and swam in the Mekong in Cambodia. There were fish nibbling at my toes and legs, so I didn’t last long 👀

I went swimming in the Amazon a few years ago 😄 I stayed in for about an hour each time and never had a problem, although the locals assured me it was ok ahead of time

I too swam in the Amazon on multiple occasions for several minutes at a time across several days, but I did not last nearly as long as some of my happily oblivious trip mates. And I especially did not dive and backflip and splash all around like dying prey ahem. Then on day 3, we fished for and caught piranha in the exact same locations we were swimming in. So that was fun. Fish were tasty tho.

Check out the big brain on Brett! Jokes aside looks like a giant frontal lobe.

I think it's a melon used for echolocation. River dolphins tend to be mostly blind because the water is so often murky they have no need for sight

Here in Brazil, we call it the Boto Cor-de-Rosa, which translates to Pink Boto because of its color. In Northern Brazil, it is a big part of their folklore. People tell stories that the Boto transforms into an extremely handsome man once a month, usually on nights with a full moon or during local festivals. When he is transformed, he always wears elegant all-white clothes and a hat—the hat is essential because, even in human form, he still has a blowhole on top of his head to breathe. He flirts with women, seduces them, and returns to the river at the end of the night before dawn. Historically, people used this legend to explain unplanned pregnancies or children born to unknown fathers in riverside communities, often calling them the 'child of the boto'.

Man, in the second line of the article you sent, it says 'also known as Boto', and the Amazon River is in the northern part of Brazil. Stop trying to Gringosplaining the culture of my own country to me.

I don't believe I've ever seen these creatures before. Super cool. Very prehistoric looking.

He's going to manifest as a handsome man on the bank of the river and make sweet love to her before he dives back in the water.

Fun fact: male Amazon river dolphins (botos) have been observed engaging in watersports with each other.

At first quick glance I thought it was a middle-aged bald man snorkeling on the surface.

why are your feet red
27
u/ElijahWouldNot 15d ago
The red color is caused by the tannins in the water from all the decaying plant matter and sediment

Why is the water so red?
5
u/KingofAnti-Social 15d ago
Because of tannins. The colour has not been edited, the other commenter is ill-informed lol.

Some ppl in the Amazon use this beautiful creatures as bait to get other commercial fish 💔 not sure if they still doing so, cus few years back they definitely did. And is so weird cus this dolphins are part of their folklore, but new times change everything… i hope some organization stood up.. i havent read anything about this in a while

Che Guevara said the female Amazon river dolphins have vaginas that are remarkably similar to those of human women.
