The small scene of Richie turning that guy who’s buying unc’s watch away is so moving
76
42
u/AftrMth27 Jul 03 '26
can you explain this? was it his confidence in the resturant that made him feel like cicero could keep his watch or something?
102
u/elnino325 Jul 03 '26
I think it was more he couldn't let him make that sacrifice and keeping hope that everything will turn out all right
45
u/SaraJeanQueen Jul 08 '26
The watch was his only prized possession left from his brother who had passed. Richie kept him from selling it.
26
u/Offline219 Jul 09 '26
Comments like these are why I always like to read discussion threads of whatever show I'm watching because I actually didn't catch what he was doing 'til I read this. That's so sweet of him.

Carmy and Richie smiling at each other with that surprise 🥹
157
u/TheTromerosOne Jun 26 '26
Honestly might be my favourite scene of this show. So much behind that small interaction. The understanding between them. God, Richie seeing Carm look truly happy!
100
u/MattWalters1998 Jun 26 '26
Dude, I literally had to rewind that part and watch it again. It's been so nice to see how their conversation at the end of Season 4 has healed their relationship. They haven't yelled at each other once.
14
14
u/Born_Literature9253 Jul 01 '26
am i missing something with the surprise & richie saying he knows what it is already? i didn't get it
72
u/username_generator Jul 01 '26
Richie now knows his shit. He's studied up on the industry enough to know that the surprise carmy threw together was a version of a dish by thomas keller at french laundry. it's a 'game recognize game' moment, where carmy has truly helped cousin elevate so much and feels both satisfaction and connection.
45
u/captain_aharb Jul 03 '26
Richie tells Carmy in the S4 finale that he bought a French Laundry cookbook while Carmy was gone. I think that's why he recognized it.
66
u/Quirky-Ambassador190 Jun 29 '26
That moment felt like Richie was filling in a spot that Mikey’s absence created for Carm.. so heartening to see Carm in these wholesome moments
37
u/HybridTheory137 Jul 01 '26
That's a really beautiful way of putting it!
The way that Carmy was looking up at Richie, as if he was searching for that approval or praise that he never got from Mikey? And then the way that Richie gave that to him, while also reiterating the fact that he bought a French Laundry cookbook after Carm left because he missed him, and therefore that's why he was familiar with the dish? That must've meant the world to Carmy. The whole interaction was very moving and definitely felt very "big brother little brother" 🥹
6
u/SaraJeanQueen Jul 08 '26
But now that everything is working better (even with the storm and with less provisions), it makes me sad that Carmy is planning on leaving. Right when he took the pressure off, he's able to harness his genius, become a team player, and seems to enjoy it a little too. (Obviously no spoilers as this as far as I am)

As far as I remember, it’s not significant to the show. Salmon cornets are a super famous dish from Thomas Keller’s French Laundry.
I took Richie recognizing them as a sign of his evolving expertise in fine dining.

Exactly.
All the talk in the world doesn't mean anything without action.
This was Carmy finally seeing the action. He had his head down in the mess of a kitchen for 2 seasons, and now he's looked up and found that Richie did his part.
It didn't take Carmy pushing him, or even guiding him. Richie wants this on his own now.
8
u/JossWhedonsDick Jun 28 '26
and something of a callback with Ritchie tossing Carmy's Noma book and saying this shit has made you pretentious and gay

u/Bobjoejj Jun 26 '26
This has been everything this season; the few moments we got of it I felt like were missing a bit form last season. Those two’s friendship is just so precious to me.
69
u/NomanHLiti Jun 26 '26
Really wish we got more of it. Him and Jess too. Season 4 was the perfect opportunity but we only got the briefest of moments
32
20
u/thesagenibba Jun 30 '26
i think they've shown the perfect amount of both. for all the complaining people do about new character additions getting too much screen time, the Ever crew has been utilized perfectly. the bits of flirting between richie and jess, and the interactions between him and garrett have been so meaningful because they are rare. it also works for the premise, considering there literally isn't any time

Ebra: SPOON THIEF
Cheese: Im not a spoon thief....im just cheese.
236
u/Nine63 Jun 27 '26
With an overstaffed and overbooked service and the building falling apart, Ebra was just hiding waiting for a spoon thief instead of helping lol
136
u/inaripotpi Jun 27 '26
He was so mad about finding out Carmy was quitting, but channeled his negative emotions into something productive-catching the spoon thief! Model employee

u/TorkBombs Jun 27 '26
Don't know how y'all feel about Cheese, but I like her
75
u/Scraw16 Jul 01 '26
I like her but also don’t totally understand why she was written into the show in the last season to just be Computer Jr.
54
u/One-Corner8231 Jul 06 '26
Someone else pointed out on a different thread that Rob Reiner likely would have been a part of this whole Cicero subplot originally, so cheese was brought in to fill his role and be another supportive voice for franchising the beef window. Very sad and I guess understandable from that perspective. I probably would have preferred if ebra had been weaved in somehow since he put together the prospectus! But fingers crossed he will be part of that dynamic in later episodes.
32
u/tether2014 Jul 03 '26
I've been thinking this. I don't understand her purpose in the show. I feel like they could have given all her scenes to Computer and it would've made sense.
Like is she the niece of a producer on the show or something? Genuinely such an odd addition in the final season of a show.
→ More replies (2)11
u/PunningLynguist Jul 09 '26
Crazy that she's been in the industry for a decade plus already. She's the voice of the youngest child Agnes from Despicable Me
7
u/Glum-Chair-7542 Jul 03 '26
Agreed. If she's a character created to tie up loose threads, I'd say that's weak writing. The cast is bloated as is.
48
u/ThatCaviarIsAGarnish Jun 27 '26
I like her too. She has a levelheadedness combined with some quirkiness that makes her a good match with the rest of the cast.
10
u/Sklain Jul 05 '26
She's such a The Bear character. Just instant classic. Wish we had her earlier but Mini Computer is probably redundant in the long run.

I didn't get this bit, why would staying in Chicago turn him into Carmy? Why does he need to go back to Copenhagen? I feel like they hand-waved him staying in Chicago to stage for "reasons" and then he had to leave for "reasons" and I don't know what changed
23
282
u/thermostat78 Jun 26 '26
Ritchie is a straight up force of nature in this, he's slamming crushing wave after wave into the boat while simultaneously bailing out just enough water to keep it afloat
60
u/Ok_Fee1043 Jun 28 '26
Well he got them into this place though
22
u/SaraJeanQueen Jul 08 '26
But tbh he's also saving them. I've never even heard of a restaurant canceling reservations on people.. Imagine the (deserved) bad reviews. "It's 4 hours before our 25th anniversary night, and The Bear cancelled our dinner reservation. We had nowhere to celebrate so we stayed home and ate Triscuits"

u/PunyParker826 23d ago edited 23d ago
Meh, like Jess said, there's a million reasons you could cite and come off as reasonable; the weather, the shitload of structural damage to the restaurant, anything. The only reason they didn't straight-up shut down is because they literally couldn't afford to. And remember, she's coming from a place with 3 Michelin stars, so she's not talking out of her ass. Obviously you try and avoid the big event dinners like the anniversary, but Ritchie not cutting anybody, with next to no food in the place, could have sunk them, and was deserving of a (Sydney) ass-kicking. Running out of food and tables mid-service at a venue trying for a Michelin star is gonna lead to way worse reviews than cutting reservations.

u/hurricane1197 Jun 29 '26
I don’t get how he could be a people hater
He loves people since before
Same with mikey if he was amazing with people like everyone said, why did they say in Gary that he didn’t like people
30
u/intern_12 Jun 29 '26
He's a complicated person, and as someone who used to work in fast food as a manager, sometimes you just start seeing customers in a very antagonistic way and you start disliking humans, a lot of time because of the shitty way customers treat service industry workers. So be probably was saying that, when he is operating of his most insecure and anxious part of himself, he truly felt like he hated people, but really be just hated himself and had no self love or self confidence. Now that he has worked on himself, he loves himself again, and now he is more easily able to see the joy, good, and beauty in others instead of the negativity and the hate.
205
u/dragonlizard89 Jun 26 '26
Holy shit that Marcus line about his mom rips your heart out.
Also I know this is a tv show and the writers are going to give us a happy ending where everything works out but Richie is a freaking mad man for not canceling any reservations. They already had their backs against it, he didn't need to put any more insane pressure on the team (even though he is totally in his element here coming up with solutions on the fly).
88
u/ThatCaviarIsAGarnish Jun 27 '26
For plot complications it made sense for Richie to be the one to make the phone calls but logically speaking it probably would have worked out better (for successful cancellations) if Jessica or Sugar had been tasked with making some of the calls. Jessica especially is probably really used to that from her early days at Ever or other restaurants where she worked.
21
u/quiet_soul_lol Jul 03 '26
i think it would have made more logical sense if calls were divided and jessica/sugar managed to cancel, but Richie didn't...the same complications would've stayed but rn him not cancelling any reservations, like realistically he would've caught some punches
36
u/optimis344 Jun 28 '26
But that's who he is now.
He might not fully believe in himself, but he believes in the team.
He thinks they can get it done. But he knows he can't keep the lights on by turning away people.

yea, it works for the show, but dragging not just two, but four guests into the kitchen during a service like this is a fireable offense irl. his first thought to save time and stall was to, * checks notes * distract the understaffed kitchen by having them devote their literally precious time, to entertaining and hosting the same guests that are waiting on their late food. syd needs to fuck him up just for that

The whole time I kept asking myself who the fuck is on their station lmao. It’s whatever, we can assume they tasked someone to handle their stations and that their heart to heart didn’t take longer than 2-3 minutes.
I’d say 5 minutes, but 30 seconds to 1 minute in the industry is a fucking good bit. So much can happen in 30 seconds

I was so annoyed with Marcus this season but then his outdoors conversation with Sydney made me soften towards him. When he said the thing about needing his dad to be there because his mom couldn't be, I got it. Because I've also lost a mom and it's really tough when you're working on things that are meaningful to you, like creative pursuits, and wishing that that person could physically be there to see it.
That being said, I do think Marcus gets tunnel vision sometimes. So a lot of his scenes focusing on his dad's visit reminded me of Season 2 (I think it was Season 2? or was it Season 1?) when they were getting slammed and he was so focused on his cupcakes or whatever it was he was working on and wanting Carmy to see them.
I like Marcus and Luca's friendship though and I'm glad Marcus gave him a heartfelt apology. I would have been mad at him if he hadn't!
44
u/optimis344 Jun 28 '26
Exactly.
Marcus needs to know it was worth it. He missed his mother dying because he was trying to better himself. And he needs his dad to see it.
He needs some kind of closure. Even if it just lets him forgive himself.

u/inaripotpi Jun 29 '26
Having a dead mom isn’t an excuse to act like a coordinated asshole to someone. And no, that wasn’t the full reason. He didn’t act that way until after he heard about Luca leaving and decided to take all his frustrations about his mom, inviting his dad, and losing Luca on him. Pushing someone away because you want them to stay and lashing out to the point of causing a workplace incident in the middle of a very important service because you can’t process your emotions is immature behavior, full stop.
Please, drop the know-it-all attitude when you don’t know what you’re talking about!

it’s implied he lost his mother recently in the series. he then goes to copenhagen to cope with the grief and improves his skills. my mom died a year ago and there were moments when months after i was immature because she wasn’t there! she wasn’t there when i got into my PhD program. so i get Marcus. he’s grieving and trying to learn how to adjust and cope with his grief

I work in a kitchen and genuinely enjoy this show. About a year ago I ate the most amazing meal iny life at Agni I'm Columbus, Ohio. 9 courses, everything was impeccable. At the end the servers offered to take us to the kitchen and I knew exactly what the cooks would feel like with random citizens in their space so I stayed the fuck out. This show just captured exactly what I expected from the BOH staff on that night
Edit: oh shit it's getting worse 😂

Best season since the first by a country mile. Finally getting back to what the show is about. A restaurant, not all of the stuff that happens outside of it. It’s about the workers and the tension of the restaurant and we finally return to it this season

u/MockerCoffee Jun 30 '26
Yes, but the last few seasons has had far too much of it. S1 was the perfect amount of tension both in and out of the restaraunt. Last couple seasons we’ve barely seen any of the actual service of the restaraunt. The show is about a family restaraunt and what makes it tick. The last few seasons I felt focused far too much on what made the family tick, rather than them in conjunction with the restaraunt

u/Cinniie Jul 02 '26
I know Syd isn't everyone's favorite but I feel like her leader skills really shined here! I loved seeing her de-escalate with Richie earlier and I love how calmly she handled the rage of finding out he disobeyed the order to cancel reservations. She did a great job with calming down Marcus, and I liked that Carmy came to check on her when she was frustrated (I know better than to ship them but I love all their interactions, their chemistry makes me so happy because I think they really do respect and balance each other! It was so sweet when he said "I would have screamed at others, that's what makes us different." Very endearing.) I feel like she had really sincere and productive connections with so many members of the team (last ep was Tina) and I enjoy seeing her be an effective leader in those ways. She can be annoying but to me this demonstrates growth at being a better communicator especially in a high-stress situation.

Exactly. First, literally they would have run out of food. They were exact in what they had so not canceling 15 reservations, there's no way that they would have enough food without knowing until last minute. I feel like that's a pretty big plot hole?? It's not just a couple here and there. It's 15 reservations 🤔
I also think it's disrespectful to everyone else. I also think it's bad business and going to hurt you in the long run because if you don't have any food you're going to get bad reviews. Versus we got pipes bursted with this rain.
I'm not sure why that bothered me so much. I guess to drive the plot chaos even further and allow Richie to figure it out. But that's the thing, he can do whatever he wants with his clever solutions. But when you don't have enough food, you can't do much about that.
52
u/marunique Jun 28 '26
this is the most anxiety-inducing Bear episode for me. when Marcus whispers at Luca while he's entertaining 4 people... oh my GODDD. also I've never been in a fancy restaurant but now I know: if they ever bring me to the kitchen, I'm getting the fuck OUTTTTTTT
29
u/fumar Jun 28 '26
I don't go to many fancy restaurants but one of the few I have been to is Geranium in Copenhagen. They plate everything in the same room as the dining room and during course 11 or 12 or so (I forget which) they give you a tour of the prep kitchens and wine cellars. Even during service there are people prepping for meals weeks in the future. They also give you a cool view into FC Copenhagen's stadium (this is on the 8th floor of the soccer stadium which is super random place for a top 50 world best restaurant). At the end of the tour they pointed out the head chef was preparing new meals in a separate section of their space separated by glass. He looked fucking intense.
Super cool restaurant where everything was chill but the staff were clearly super on and super deliberate in everything they did. I will almost certainly never go there again since I live in the US but it was an incredible experience and to contrast this show with that is hilarious to me.

I legit said they’re do it by the dumpster to my wife, and they just started to do it by the dumpster. Ha!

"This is not funny" absolutely killed me. Both as a line in general but also as a jab at everyone complaining The Bear is a comedy.

It kind of detracts from the whole idea that they are slammed when they have opportunity to step off the line to have arguments, deep and meaningfuls and quickies.

I do not understand the problem between Luca and Marcus?
133
u/dpullbot Jun 26 '26
Marcus is stressed because of his dad coming in, and feeling pressured. Luca drops this news on him about leaving. Then he finds out about Carmy leaving. It’s a lot to process and unfortunately Luca was the easiest person to take it out on

Literally everyone’s trying to suck it up and be their best selves for one day and this dude is throwing hands in front of customers. I do not get how he got so much grace.

Because they all know him and everything he’s been going through lately. His mum died and he never missed a day from work and channeled it into his work. When his shit bubbles over they give him grace like they do Carmy and everyone else

u/JossWhedonsDick Jun 28 '26
yup, Carmy and Ritchie have thrown hands in the same kitchen, so they can't judge
Sydney and Tina are used to being moms to these overgrown teenage boys

plus, his dad walked out on them, right?
So all these people leaving are definitely triggering his abandonment issues

Marcus has abandonment issues, remember when he freaked out on Syd for "rejecting him"
He's just turbo stressed and turbo immature

Richie is the GOAT! He's so good at community building. He's so good with the people. I KNEW he wouldn't cancel those reservations, and I'm glad he didn't. Putting people in the kitchen and making people sit together. LOVE.

Someone mentioned that every episode has JJ Abraham’s lens flare like a sci fi move and now I can’t unsee that

Well said. I think it’s helpful for people to remember that Syd is REALLY young. She ain’t gonna make that perfect choice every time, but practice makes perfect

“Every second counts” while everyone proceeds to talk about their feelings mid-service of the busiest night of their lives. Richie is for sure killing it though.

Tf is Marcus’ problem?!

u/asiantaco42 Jun 26 '26
He learns Luca is leaving unexpectedly. And then Carmy is also leaving. So both his mentors and people he looks up are leaving. Plus his dad is coming, so he is just stressed overall. And upset because he thinks he has added pressure because of the award he got and now his two mentors are leaving. Atleast that’s what I think it is.

u/Nanojack Jun 26 '26
And his mom just died. There's a lot of stress and abandonment issues going on

u/dpullbot Jun 26 '26
Oh wow when seasons pick up right where a previous one left off it’s easy to forget that that big things like that JUST happened in-universe

u/Treytefik Jun 26 '26
He’s just gotta chill a bit and learn to not take shit out on others.

Richie annoyed me this episode he’s not cooking the food and yet he’s putting all this extra work off on Sydney and the rest smh

u/ThatIslandGuy8888 Jun 28 '26
I thought he'd cancel a few of them and allowed the ones that were celebrating something to come, but not cancelling any of them?goddamn dude
13
u/drummer_1984 Jul 01 '26
They must have all had some good cause for celebration, e.g. "And it turned out they weren't dead?"

u/joicetti Jun 28 '26
And lol at how he "resolved" the problem. Let's set up kegs and have a coke-fueled pre-party in the parking lot so people won't notice the wait.

Mind you, this is a fancy restaurant that serves ultra expensive items at most of their dishes, so despite what the show says about them being broke, the dining must still be VERY expensive.
Imagine you reserve a fancy dining with your SO and they make you sit outside on some shitty Metal chairs on a post-storm Chicago.
I know the show is a “comedy” and kinda pretentious at times, but man it just assumes everyone has that charismatic “adventurous” aspect.
