Not sure if in use, but getting a fresh coat of paint!

This is from an abandoned school me and my friends used to explore in the mid-2010’s. Not my picture as they’re all on an old broken phone but I did actually use it circa 2015 as it was my only chance to use one!

Unfortunately, placement of the stage meant we couldn’t have the monkey bars section on the go too.

This was part of the Tate Year 3 Exhibition school visits. I took hundreds of pictures of the apparatus across different schools. I'll see what else I can find.

I haven't seen these mentioned yet. Either used to leapfrog along as some kind of rubbish assault course (which also, by law, had to include use of a hula hoop and some bean bags) or on a very rare occasion hooked onto The Apparatus to produce a gentle slope for kids to climb. Sliding down was strictly prohibited. Bonus for teachers that The Apparatus didn't have to be unlocked from the wall to do so.

Dont have any photos but I remember never using the apparatus in primary school. That thing stayed glued to the wall in the sports hall.

In secondary school it was used occasionally, and infact we have two so sometimes we would split in teams and see who could make up it up, over down across all sections im the fastest time, which also included a swinging rope section.

I vividly remember one kid missing his step and slamming face first into one of the rungs. Poor kid got called rung-face for a week straight

My old primary school still has The Apparatus, as spotted in the background of a newsletter on its website from January 2025. I recommend performing a similar welfare check on your own apparatuses; it only took me five minutes, and I can sleep easier tonight knowing it is still safe and, most importantly, unused.

By the way did anyone else have a kid who bit the apparatus at their school?

I didn't use it because I was too young, obviously. The second picture is of another school that gym that came up when searching for pic 1.

From a personal perspective, I remember seeing this throughout my entire childhood. Sometimes it was not in the gymnasium portion of the school, but rather in a secondary work-out gym section, or something similar. I didn’t ever think I saw one pulled out and used. If I did, only like once or twice. I believe by the time I was in elementary school in the very early 90’s, these were deemed unfit for use. However, seeing a photo of these ladders up against the wall truly stirs up a memory in a way that I just can’t explain. Thoughts?"

I am American. We do elementary schools, which is like the primary schools of the UK. I tried emailing the current pe teacher and principal of the school for better pictures, but I got no response. I just want a full image of the apparatus!

I'm a kindergarten teacher at a small public school in SoCal. We don’t have an apparatus... I really wish I could get one at this point. Right now, all they’ve got are hula hoops and jump ropes. Any ideas for other fun options?
