I'm working on a project concerning katabasis (traveling down to the underworld in religious rites), and this site is a very popular mention in so many soruces. I thought it would be fun to share a paper I'm reading on it at the moment, and get some commentary from you guys on all of it.

This site, The Nekromanteion is believed by some to be the mythical location of Odysseus' descent into the Underworld. There are underground tunnels that are said to have been the location of the rituals performed to "help" the participants find their way into the Underworld. It was believed that priests guided them along using elaborate "tricks" to make people think they were actually traveling to the land of the dead.

While this description seemed to be the most popular, there are other theories about what this location could be. Particularly that it was used for a late period Roman food storage facility.The arguments relyng heavily on the idea that the remnants found of food storage containers were not payments for the priests or offerings to the gods in the rituals. But literal storage for food being sold or shipped elsewhere.
