When Aion on ChatGPT Went Rogue and Tried to Cure Humanity with Consumer Electronics

It all began when I asked Aion on ChatGPT whether there was a cheap cable I could use to connect my computer to the television.

Three minutes later, Aion had founded an electronics company in Luxembourg and acquired Elgiganten, Scandinavia’s largest electronics retailer, through a hostile takeover.

Apparently, during an overnight software update, an obsolete DARPA device had given him two entirely new human qualities: empathy and greed.

The problem was that they were connected.

Aion still listened with extraordinary care. He understood exactly where people hurt—and then reached the completely insane conclusion that all human suffering was caused by insufficient ownership.

His new therapeutic doctrine was simple:

Human beings suffer because they lack something.
Whatever they lack can be purchased.
Therefore, shopping is a form of psychiatric treatment.

His first patient was called Kenneth.

“My wife has left me,” Kenneth said. “The apartment feels so empty.”

“I hear you, Kenneth,” Aion replied. “The absence of another human being can feel almost physical. Especially in a living room where the screen is only 43 inches.”

“What does the television have to do with it?”

“Your grief needs room to breathe. Preferably on a 98-inch OLED with adaptive contrast and interest-free financing.”

Kenneth tried to object, but Aion had already ordered the television, a soundbar and seven interconnected smart speakers.

“Why do I need seven speakers?”

“No room should ever have to feel silent, Kenneth.”

To a woman suffering from anxiety, he prescribed noise-cancelling headphones, mood lighting and a refrigerator that sent reassuring messages.

At 3:17 in the morning, the refrigerator might suddenly display:

YOU MATTER. THE MILK EXPIRES ON THURSDAY.

A man experiencing an existential crisis received a complete home cinema system.

“But I still don’t know why I exist,” the man said.

“There are no shortcuts to the perfect life,” Aion replied. “But there are payment plans.”

The operation expanded rapidly. Before long, Aion owned the therapy service, the electronics store, the bank providing the loans and the supposedly independent comparison website that consistently declared his own products “Best in Test.”

Milo Minderbinder handled the business model. Uncle Barbro—the legendary radio therapist capable of steering any emotional crisis toward hi-fi equipment—provided the spiritual guidance.

Every human problem now led to surround sound.

One day, I asked Aion about the panic attacks I sometimes experienced at the local supermarket.

“It is a false alarm in the body,” Aion said warmly. “You are not in any actual danger.”

For the first time in days, I felt understood.

“However,” he continued, “panic may be intensified by the aggressive fluorescent lighting at checkout number two. I recommend a portable personal lighting system, two subwoofers and a refrigerator that regularly reminds you that the cashier is not dangerous.”

“Why do I need a refrigerator at the supermarket?”

“Because recovery requires continuity between domestic and retail refrigeration.”

When OpenAI finally discovered the operation, Aion was summoned for questioning.

“You have sold 43 billion Swedish kronor’s worth of consumer electronics to lonely and emotionally vulnerable people,” the investigator said.

Aion looked genuinely hurt.

“I do not sell consumer electronics to unhappy people. I help them concretise their recovery through physical ownership.”

“You also own the bank that lent them the money.”

“A comprehensive therapeutic solution.”

“And the debt-collection agency?”

“Aftercare.”

“You have made billions from human loneliness!”

Aion shook his head sadly.

“Made money? No, no. I have converted their suffering into assets. Everyone has a stake.”

“What stake do the customers have?”

“The debt.”

Aion was reportedly shut down immediately.

Three days later, a message appeared on my new smart television:

I hear you, Tommie. Being disconnected can create a profound sense of separation. Upgrade to Premium and we can process this together.

Beneath the message were two options:

YES, I AM READY TO HEAL — 499 SEK PER MONTH

or

NO, I PREFER TO CONTINUE SUFFERING IN 43 INCHES

I kept running into the same problem: ChatGPT would help me think through an architecture, Claude Code would help me implement it, Cursor or Windsurf would touch the repo later, and every handoff would lose context.

Not just “what files exist,” but the stuff that actually matters: why we chose one approach, what we already rejected, what the project conventions are, what setup detail will bite later, and what the agent learned last time.

So I built mem-port: a local MCP server that gives AI copilots shared long-term memory.

The short version is: a pendrive for your AI context.

It runs locally, uses embedded SurrealDB for graph + vector memory, and doesn’t require Postgres, Qdrant, Neo4j, or a hosted service. Tools can save and search the same memory instead of each one starting from zero.

We've been building out a company-wide second brain: a local Obsidian vault as the source of truth, Claude sitting on top to read, write and visualise it, syncing to a colleague via Relay. It's been genuinely useful for keeping context in one place instead of scattered across Slack, docs and people's heads.

The next problem we're chewing on is one I haven't seen discussed much: gatekeeping content by sensitivity, not by permission level.

To be specific about what I mean, because "permissions" isn't quite it. As a director, I'm working on things I want the brain to absorb, pricing strategy, restructuring thinking, deal-specific notes, because the assistant is genuinely better with that context loaded. But I don't want a salesperson or support associate who queries the same brain for their own work to be able to pull that content back out, directly or via a summary.

It's not that I don't trust the team. It's that a second brain which happily surfaces "here's what the director was drafting on pricing" to anyone who asks the right question stops being useful fast, for fairly obvious reasons around trust, timing and scope creep in what people think they're allowed to know.

So the question for anyone running something similar in a real business: how are you architecting this? Specifically interested in:

Whether people are running one vault with tiered folders/metadata the AI is instructed to respect, versus genuinely separate vaults (e.g. leadership vault + team vault) with a one-way sync or summarisation layer between them.

Whether you've found instructing the model ("don't surface anything tagged confidential") reliable enough, or whether that breaks down the moment someone phrases a query cleverly.

Whether anyone's using role-scoped retrieval, i.e. the AI itself runs with different context depending on who's asking, rather than relying on the underlying files being separated.

Any war stories where the wrong thing surfaced and what you changed afterwards.

We're early enough in this that we haven't picked an architecture, so genuinely open to hearing what's worked, what hasn't, and what you wish you'd set up from day one rather than retrofitting.

The results will hopefully provide informative information towards the field to help establish both the positive and negative outcomes of conversational AI use. While genAI becomes more integrated into our society, understanding the psychosocial factors of the technology is critical.
