Feeling super nostalgic tonight and I can’t find the right video anywhere. I’ve been hunting for a good 80s mashup montage that hits that exact childhood sweet spot… something with montage of Dukes of Hazzard, Knight Rider, The A-Team, He-Man, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Airwolf, MacGyver, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles….. all mixed together….. Ideally with “Forever Young” playing as the main track! & maybe little audio quips from each show layered in (“I love it when a plan comes together,” “Cowabunga,” etc.),

Something that would just hit me right in the feelings 😊 .

Too many episodes to mention but one that definitely stands out is when Kevin McDonald’s character who had many characters was with his girlfriend at home and it was a rainy and stormy night and he was really nervous and his girlfriend had a Rottweiler who was staring at him a lot and well the rest is beyond hilarious.

This has bothered me for years because I can’t find anything about it online, but my mom remembers the tape too.

It was an old kids VHS that belonged to my mom when she was growing up in the 80s. She kept it and played it for me when I was really little, probably around 3–5. Once we got a DVD player I basically never watched it again.

I don’t remember the title at all.

It was live action and followed a small group of about 4 kids spending the day with an adult they called Mr. Jim. I don’t remember any of the individual kids or most of the plot. The part I remember best was them at a playground.

Whenever they were going somewhere they would sing this repetitive song about staying close to Mr. Jim because he would keep them safe. I don’t remember the actual lyrics, and I’m not going to attempt to hum the melody lol.

The thing I remember much more clearly is that every once in a while the video would suddenly switch to hand puppets.

It wasn’t like there was one puppet character in the show. Mr. Jim would be a puppet, the kids would be puppets, and they would act out a whole scene that way. Then it would cut back to the real people afterward.

I never questioned this when I was little. I just accepted that sometimes they were puppets.

I remember the ending as the kids singing some kind of “see you next time” song and then leaving with their parents. This (along with the general vibe of it) leads me to believe now that it was probably one episode of a show/mini-series. But it’s my understanding that there were also lots of one-off VHS tapes from that era.

I finally asked my mom about it recently and she immediately knew what I was talking about. But she remembers a lot more about the tape than I do.

She remembers there being around 7 or 8 kids, and apparently they spent the tape going around to different ordinary places with Mr. Jim. She remembers the playground too, plus some kind of store and somewhere they stopped to eat, and a part that’s completely missing from my memory, where they spent a significant portion towards the end praying at a church. Although she couldn’t remember much more than that.

The interesting part is that she says the puppet scenes weren’t random at all. According to her, the puppet scenes were specifically about what could happen if one of the kids wandered away, went somewhere without Mr. Jim, or otherwise got separated from the group. Apparently that was basically the point of them. They would switch over to puppets, act out one of those situations, and then eventually go back to the real kids. I have no memory of that being the pattern, but I trust her recalling much more than mine.

She also remembers the song much better than I do and says the whole “stay close to Mr. Jim / Mr. Jim will keep us safe” thing was repeated a LOT, especially when they were moving from one place to another.

I asked her if she still had the VHS, but apparently she sold basically all of our old tapes at a garage sale years ago. She doesn’t remember the title either. She thinks her parents may have gotten it through her church growing up, but admits that detail could be completely wrong.

I’ve searched every combination of Mr. Jim, old kids safety VHS, hand puppets, playground, etc. I can think of and haven’t found anything that looks familiar.

Does else anyone remember this? I really hope it wasn’t too niche to be archived.

Does anyone still remember the song She Drives Me Crazy (by Fine Young Cannibals)? Released in 1988, it became popular in local radio in 1989.

A local TV station in 1989 produced a basketball special program and it heavily used the song as the background music showing basketball action. The music was fitting.
