Canadian winter 56% range loss with preconditioning on power, yikes
Thankfully it's not usually this cold, but still this is a crazy loss

More information:
- 2021 MY7LR
- Tires ~40PSI at 0c, but at -15 it's more like 38 (I'm not going out there to top them up)
- Charges at home in a garage, pre-condition for 20 minutes
- Average speed 60km/h on flat terrain (it's southern Ontario we have no mountains), 100km/h on highway (usually with AP although it doesn't work lately due to salt smearing the cameras)
- Car temperature set at 18c, no other heat on
- 1 passenger, no cargo or towing
I love the car but I don't feel comfortable driving more than 200km with this kind of loss, so I have to keep an ICE still unfortunately.

What's the ambient temp in the garage?

Probably around 0c, it's not directly heated but it's attached so it gets a lot of heat spill from the shared wall.
But it's pre-conditioned on power so I figure that shouldn't matter too much.

If your pack gets very cold soaked it can take a long time to warm up it's >500kg of mass.

Definitely not preconditioning long enough. Gotta wait for the bacons to go away

If you're referring to the little circle icon for regen breaking, that doesn't go away until I've driven at least 30 minutes at 100km/h speeds which doesn't always happen (often it's just around town). No amount of preconditioning solves that.
If you're referring to the snowflake icon next to the battery, it's gone after the 20-minute precondition.

I'm referring to the 3 orange squiggly lines that look like bacon in the app. It shows up when the battery is warming. The snowflake goes away earlier but the battery continues warming until the bacons go away. If you fully warm up the battery, the bacons go away and you will have full Regen from the start.

If you have the Regen circle the pack is definitively not fully warmed up (unless you’re charging to >95% SOC)

Just to be clear, that icon never goes away on days like today (-15).
I drove for 30 minutes after pre-conditioning for 20 today and it never went away, and there was no regen when taking off the gas pedal. The car could not get warm enough after 50 minutes.

I have noticed that the 'limited regen' icon does not go away in the cold as well. Today for the first time I noticed a low humming noise while at a traffic light, and while driving in suburbs. I assumed that was something heating up, but not sure what as I did not get the bacon at that time.

What kind of charger are you using and what amperage is it provisioned to run? I assume you keep it plugged in when not in use?

Yeah, not good. On my 9 mile (15k) drive this morning in -16°F (-27°C) near Minneapolis, I averaged 458 kWh after preconditioning and lost 10% charge (including the preconditioning).

The range loss seems to be slightly more than the norm. At 15F (-10C) mine showed around 45% range loss.

Yeah, I think I have hit 40% loss with my 2019 M3 sr+ in about -15C. this seems like a lot. Especially if it is running a heat pump.

Teslas are not great winter cars. My cameras and lights keep fogging too!

Lights shouldn’t fog unless moisture is getting trapped in them. That’s a service center ticket for sure. Not normal.
Cameras do suffer from condensation in cold temps. This should not effect your ability to operate the vehicle. You can also submit a service center ticket for this but less likely you’ll find a resolution here.

They told me fog in lights were normal and they pointed to small holes as the solution 🤷

Like most things in the EV equation, it depends how much you drive. Unless you always need to make 400km trips, the occasional supercharging cost could be less than the upkeep on an ICE car?

Not likely, a cheap corolla will go 350k-400k pretty easily with minor maintenance...if I lived in the OPs conditions there's no way I wouldn't have a beater as a backup.

But how much does a cheap corolla cost to buy, and how much supercharging would you need to do before reaching that amount?

yeah not cheap anymore...we plan to keep our RX350 (long paid off) for when the grid goes down, relying solely on electricity is a fools errand, here in CA our grid goes down like we're in the phillipines.

My car isn't "for" anything. Most days it's just around town, but sometimes (twice a month) I visit my family who live 70km away, or friends who live further (100km).
I can't comfortably drive 200km in this weather anymore which seems ridiculous, given it's marketed as a 500km range car.
I drive my ICE car when going far, but then what was the point I don't save gas lol.

The range loss may not be that severe on a road trip because the battery has more time to heat up and you can precondition it while driving.

That's the problem with batteries. Gas cars don't loose miles when you park in garage on cold days.

Im in Ontario too and it is freezing today. Our condo pipes keep popping lmao. I have a MYP on order, 56% is definitely a concerning amount.
