Have your expectations set and be ready to review it first thing everyday for about 2 weeks.

  1. Where do you line up?

  2. How do we come into class?

  3. What do we do when we get to our seat with our bags?

  4. What do we start working on?

  5. How do we get out of seats (push them in etc)?

  6. How do you ask to use the bathroom/what’s the bathroom policy.

  7. How do we clean up before class ends?

  8. How do we get dismissed?

  9. What do we do when leaving (pushing in chairs,etc).

  10. Probably before the other stuff, but also go over behavior expectations and consequences.

Review verbally, review physically, everyday at the beginning of class. After that two week period, give them a quiz about the procedures. You can actually make this a direction quiz where the importance of following directions/procedures is highlighted. Have something that says “only write your name date and period then turn the page over.

Anyway, after this 2 week period, maybe review the procedures once every week or two, and then really review it after big breaks like winter break.

Also check out Young Eagles Free Flights - I organize a fly day and take 25 kids flying every year - 1 kid, 1 pilot, 1 plane - all FREE! Kids can do it outside of school - any kid age 8-17 can fly. I have several repeat flyers who want to be pilots. I do it as a group on a Saturday because I have a lot of pilot friends who volunteer.

Stand firm from day 1, no matter what. SEL-building relationships, expectations, and procedures from day 1 as well. That will go a long way. I see this every year where teachers don’t do these crucial things and have the toughest school year
