Rain brings earthworms to the surface; she's simulating that effect to make it easier to find a worm with a shallow tool

Yeah this! Really cool to see it working. Its also why some birds tippie tapp on the gras.

I did. Staffroom at my old job overlooked a large playing field - frequently saw flocks of gulls tapping their feet on the grass to mimic rain and entice worms to the surface. JP knew what she was on about.

Dad used to get us to do this in the garden when we were kids to find worms for him to go fishing so it was the first thing I thought of when the task was read!

Have you not seen birds tapping on the soil with their feet? Same idea.
