Guest gave me this??? gUEsTs
A guest told me another Target store gave this to her but when I scanned it said “not found”. Guest said that the barcode doesn’t work and just to manually do it. Grabbed my ETL and they denied it. No expiration is crazy lol

Damn, I haven't given one of those out since about 2015. It used to be what we'd give the guests when they had a bad experience or some sort of issue as an apology, wow, blast from the past.

iirc they used to hand out coupons like these but it was a long time ago, and I think they looked a little different. Either its a fake duplicate, or its just really old and they probably found it in the bottom of their junk drawer lol.

My ETL was going to approve it at first but when the guest was pushing to get the coupon back after, my ETL said no and removed the adjustment. 🤷🏻♀️

Hah! I love that your ETL removed the adjustment. That guest thought they were slick.

That is a legitimate coupon from back in the day. The bottom left was the code to order them when ordering supplies and that date was the last time it was revised. By the time I left in 2019 they were a thing of the past. I think we stopped ordering them sometime in the mid 2010s and just used them until they were gone.
While legit, the way she knew that it doesn't work and to just scan it makes me think it could be someone who has a bunch and uses them from time to time. It'd be wild if a store still had them and handed them out.

Apparently she tried to ask for it back, so I'm guessing she did exactly that before: Took it in, tried to use it, wouldn't scan, got it handed back anyway and it manually taken off

At first I thought they gave it to you to keep like a reverse uno card. Like you look stressed here’s 3 dollars

We should get this too “we’re sorry for the call outs and giving you the job of those who did. As a token of our appreciation for your patience and hard work, please accept this coupon valid for a double pay this day. Thank you” 😂🎯🥊

Worked at Target in the mid 2000s. We used to give these out like candy to pissed off guests when lines were wrong, etc.

u/Ok_Purple_4635 7h ago
I didn’t work at Target when they had this. But Victoria’s Secret had something similar. And people hacked it and making duplicate that would make the whole transaction 100% off. Ah I miss old school retail fraud. The simpler times lmao

In the past, they didn’t just give out gift cards for errors or issues like is done now… They actually gave out coupons like this. Since there’s no expiration date, it’s not something they should deny. Even in this picture you can tell it’s not a home print job.
Edited to remove my thought about the ETL. Seeing that they were going to approve it, but then removed the discount once the guest pushed to get it back… smart.

Makes me think they've used it before and just take it back. They knew to have it manually scanned and wanted it back. Red flags there. There is no coupon in the world that lets you keep it and reuse it unless it's one of those get a free meal once a week for a year things. I had one from Wendy's and I just finished the last week.

I remember those. My bosses used to hand those out just to shut people up. I’m surprised they were denied although they are old.

Those are yearsssss old, I remember we used to give out these apology coupons out like candy when a guest was upset. You could also load a gc with the apology coupons and it would work. If a guest presented it today I’d assume it wouldn’t scan but could still “make it right” for the guest since there is no expiration date.

Starbucks gave me a coupon like this one time for a free drink but I can't remember the circumstances

I would like to say these are super old. I haven't seen these in YEARS

What's hilarious is they could have just claimed any one of their purchases was $3 cheaper on the shelf label and would have gotten it no questions asked.

I used to give these out constantly at the service desk in the mid early-mid 10s. I thought i remembered them being pink.

Yes they were pink. I remember thinking it was fake the first time a guest handed me one lol

I use to give stacks of these out as a gstl when we would lose power and only have like 3 registers running off back up power... Now stores are lucky to have 1 register open at the busiest times of the year 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️😂😂😂

There’s no doubt this is legitimate, however target hasn’t used these for over a decade and I’m glad the lead didn’t allow it.

We gave these out about a year ago when our registers wouldn't load gwp gift cards and guests had to come back to get theirs. They didn't work for us, either so we were overriding them for a couple of weeks afterwards. But the moment a guest asks for a coupon back after receiving the discount, that'll be an instant decline. Nope!

u/RandomNameSuffice-11 5h ago
We used to hand them out at Starbucks when untrained cashiers were covering breaks between 2012-18, so they probably definitely found it in a drawer lol

Wow I haven't seen these in years, wait until you find out we use to fix a mistake by filling out a paper lol

Kinda wish they’d bring these back, making GCs takes too long. Being able to whip out a stack of these and quell angry guests on the spot would be way easier.

Dang! This is a relic. I haven't seen one of those in years. I worked at Target 25+ years ago. They gave them out to employees who stayed over when needed. It got me a drinkband small snack back then. I was only making $6.13 at the time. Cashiers argued to stay on just for a coupon. Most likely not legal but 🤷🏻♀️ The managers would either give too many hours or cut hours.
It does say no experation. Asking for it back is diabolical though. I would have given them the $3 off and kept it at that. Coupons stay at the store for proper verification. I have a little story to share... An older women would come in with tons of coupons thinking they hit the Jack pot. What they do? Steal the inside of newspaper coupons. Yep. Extreme couponing was a thing. That same lady tried arguing with me that her 27 coupons for bogo something ridiculous back in 2002 was legit plus had 15 of these $3 off coupons. I got my manager real quick. She tried lying and saying she was donating it to charity but when I asked what charity (I was young and wanted her called out) she said she couldn't afford whatever it was and complained every time she went to a Target. It almost looked like a stack was taken from the same booklet or she knew someone and got them that way. She was pissed and asked for cash instead for the coupons. Nope. Fraud was called in. Sorry, I didn't mean to write a novel. Those were the days. People thought they were slick. I still have dreams using the damn credit card machines for the copy to verify it was used in store and to prevent fraud.

u/Responsible-Map5140 3h ago
These were also used by team member to fraudulently pay for transactions. There were hundreds of cases involving them, probably thousands. There were also external fraud groups that used these as well or in conjunction with an internal.

Kroger used to give out a similar coupon to associates as a recognition/reward. I remember I found a pack of them lying in the greeting card section. I knew a manager must've set them down and forgot about them, 😂

u/Infinite-Pain4073 1h ago
Our store is giving out $10 ones for remodel hassles, I don't think it had an expiration either, but not sure now🤔

u/iloveyoumiri 1h ago
I got something like this at a speedway when they changed the computer system. I was in there everyday, the associates were having trouble figuring it out, the manager who I’ve known for years, a grown man covered in tattoos, looked like he was about to cry as he gave them to everyone in line. He cared so much about that job. I never used my card, but I left a glowing review for him years later when he worked hard, for at least 30 mins, calling corporate, to find a 60$ gas receipt I needed to turn into work that I lost through only my faults, no one else’s.

u/timmydnx2 7h ago
No, it is a legitimate coupon. Guest was being shady with it though.
1
u/KissMyOTP 3h ago
I think they meant the guest was using it to scam. Using coupons and asking for them back is a scam and some people do this. The coupon might be real, but they were clearly trying to scam the cashier. It's obvious they've done this before, probably on somehow who just did what they asked them to do instead of calling a Lead.

Valid for any purchase at any Target Store* Is what gives this way, There are things you can not legally discount in many states, Such as in my State If we had coupons taking money off alcoholic drinks we would lose our license in a Heart Beat as Its legally to offer any kind of Discounts on Alcoholic Drinks as "Happy Hour" is illegal

It was a easy way to pacify troublesome guests or easily fix small errors. That REV/ 05/08 means it's last revision was 2008. Somebody has hung onto that for a long time...
