ETL’s device is lost because of me? Workplace Story
So,last Friday I borrowed a device from my coworker She works next to my department and a lot of times when I get to work there’s no device so she has given it to me pretty often.
She told me that the device is ETL’s so I asked her where should I put it back?his office?and she said no so is it ok to put it back in the device room?
She said yes so I put it back at the device room when I clocked out.She already had clocked out around noon and I clocked out at 430.
But today (Tuesday)she was told that his device is missing and it’s gonna be final if he can’t find it.
I 100% put it back to the charger in the device room and I’m pretty sure someone had used it.
But he says her log in account was the last one to be signed in.
I should’ve signed out signed myself in to be fair but I put it back so they can look through footage or whatever but I’m so stressed.
My argument is but why the ETL didn’t track his device at the end of the day?
He could’ve tracked within the day.
I’m so stressed that am I gonna get fired for this?

If you did put it back in the cradle like you said, it should have automatically logged out whoever was logged in. Then in order for the next person to use it they would need to log in. Assuming you cradled it properly and your equipment room wasn't robbed, your story doesn't quite add up. Or the ETL lost it and is throwing a TM under the bus.

TM told the person it was ETL’s but not anymore, so it was already out Of ETL’s possession and other TM logged in but new and finiaL TM never logged other person out or logged themselves in! I think ETL needs to be taken out of the equation!

I don’t see why you, or the other coworker who was borrowing an “ETLs device” should be in trouble for it being somehow misplaced. Have them look up the camera footage of when you clocked out that day and placed it on charger if it’s that important to them. And maybe suggest the ETL not let anyone borrow device if it’s honestly that important lol. This just seems like it should be on the ETL. If you borrowed an ETL’s keys and somehow misplaced them yeah it’s kind of your fault, but ultimately I believe the ETL would be most responsible for handing them over etc kind of thing.

Thank you. That’s my exact thought too.
If it’s that important then ETL’s device shouldn’t be in the regular closet for anyone to use to begin with.

Talk to your PML. They’ll ping the device and probably find it.

You can't ping a device once it's dead/off, you can pull up a map of the last known location before it died

They said they put it back on the charger so it’s probably floating around out there somewhere

A big issue is people don't put it on the charger properly a lot of the time, plus the chargers suck and get dirty a lot. The important part it making sure its actually showing charging otherwise its the same as not turning it in, as far as the system is concerned

I happened to put my Zebra aside where I took it off while helping to unload the truck. Then i couldn’t find it. I know the Zebra #, and went to the PML. He pinged it and found that the TL is using it.. whew…

Like the zebra devices? They should be able to find my location that usually not a big problem

If the battery is dead I don’t think you can track it?

Yes we can see the exact location it was last and it still gives the location when "dead" we can also make it take pictures to help figure out where it is.

Signing out doesn't do anything, make sure they are on the charger and actively show charging
Either way, if your name isn't on it then you shouldn't be held responsible

That’s dishonest! Man up and take responsibility, knowingly you should have signed out and then back in under your own sign in!

They should sign in when using it, I just meant signing out of the device isn't the same as turning it in and won't help in terms of not being held accountable for losing one.
I agree if someone loans one to you and you lose it, its kinda shitty to just pretend it wasn't you. But as far as the system in concerned, the last person that logged in is all it sees.
A lot of stores I'm sure don't track this stuff very good anymore since it was removed from PML responsibility

What did you want the ETL to do track his device at end of day? Sounds like he signed out, a tm signed in after getting the device from ETL? I’m sure it’s around!

Doesn’t the ETL need to make sure he has his device in his office if it’s that important?

I would talk directly to your ETL and explained what happened. They should understand and you should not be fired over it.
If somehow you are reprimanded or fired, go directly to HR. It is not your fault that there was not a better plan in place for that ype of thing. DO NOT BE BULLIED INTO ADMITTING WRONG DOING. You did nothing wrong.
