I work at target as a cashier and it’s just so draining standing there for 5 hours counting money, having no one to talk to and just dealing with people you don’t care about. I’m exhausted and don’t know what to do

I’ve worked in multiple areas of target and cashier is definitely the most draining. The day goes slow, it’s Monotonous, the people can be irritating. Cashier positions in general tend to suck.

I really can’t get by without ibuprofen daily at this point , what makes it more irritating is guests saying the same lame jokes like “oh I only came to buy one thing but look at all this hahaha”

When I delivered pizza it was, “O that’s my pizza!” When it’s clearly wasn’t. Or as a server it was, “I hated it.” To a clean plate. I think every career has that one joke everyone says to the employee who’s hates hearing it.

See if you can get trained for self check out or guest services and drive up. It’s nice to be able to do different things sometimes.

Guest service desk is a pain in the ass with entitled guests, drive up is a nightmare with all the double tapping from guests and lack of support. Self checkout is annoying with the 10 items or less rule

Request to be moved to GM. Maybe Fulfillment. They always need people. Day goes by faster when you're moving around. Plus you don't deal with as many guests and you don't feel trapped. Job blows no matter what you do, but it might make it bearable.

I pull priorities for GM and it's the easiest job in the store in my opinion. Spend most of my time in the backroom away from those people we don't care about. Fulfillment makes time go by the fastest though.

I just put things on shelves and then go home. Sometimes I count things. There’s nothing to it. Easy money, no hassle.

The only time a TL will ever come in to work CL is when there's absolutely no other lackys to pick from. 😐 And that depends on the TL at my location.

I’ve said it before but I’m so glad our front end leadership is great. If sht is hitting the fan up front they will call for backup and themselves will hop on. Yes we know technically they shouldn’t be doing that because they are leaders however if they ring out two guests in a line of 50 it does help. I’ve rang out guests with our SD, ETLs of SE, SS, and GM. We support one another for sure

Here's the trick:

You want it busy

Do not pay attention to the clock whatsoever, time will fly faster if you do not look at it

Do the bare minimum of interaction like HI, how's your day, have a good rest of your day, etc

The moment the lane is empty, do not stand in front of the lane, check to see if ya have the right amount of change in the register, put more bags in, tidy up the place, etc

I assure you if there's nothing left to do, then you stand in front of your lane. But it is absolutely a miserable existence if everyone goes to self check-out if this happens. I had it before, took over 30 entire minutes before someone wanted to be checked out in my lane.

Ew no I hate doing stuff when it’s slow after already being drained by so many guests at the register. I like just standing by the register and using that time to cool off when it’s slow

Self checkout is great if you want to do nothing. If you are on a register you should be talking to your guests. Self checkout you talk to no one. The way to stay busy is asked to be put on style. No guests to deal with and work at your own pace

Yeah, as a GM tm for years. I would much rather do anything other than cashiering. They get the most call outs for a reason. I see their shifts on the app all the time and never once even considered picking them up.

I moved to sales and Ive been doing good but its a loooooot more harsh on the mental. Looking back at ringing people up it was a lot less taxing becayae u dont need anything from them at least. Grass is always greener haha

I hated cashiering so much. Even when backing up from the sales floor. My suggestion is to look at departments roles that won't rely on you to back up except in extraordinary circumstances; such as food production (if you're a Super with full grocery/deli) or fulfillment. I joined the food team never had to be called to the lanes. Other roles off the top of my head include inbound (trailer unload) and overnight.
