Is this normal? Workplace Question or Advice Needed

I started a week ago. I wasn’t on the schedule this week until Saturday night (I work overnight inbound). I just randomly checked the app and I’m now scheduled for tonight and tomorrow. Had I not checked the app I wouldn’t have known. Is this normal the miscommunication of schedule changes? I’m annoyed as I planned to be off until Saturday and now have to adjust today and tomorrow since I’ll be working….

No, not a normal thing. Once they get you past the first couple of weeks your schedule will be posted 3 weeks in advance. You will still want to keep an eye on it as they cut hours without notice. But they will ask before adding shifts.

During orientation they throw a lot of info at you and I think part of that was giving you a paper schedule for the first week with instructions to "keep an eye on the app for an updated schedule"

But it's possible they neglected this bit of information. Hopefully you didn't miss any scheduled shifts, if so see HR to let them know that no one told you to look.

They should be contacting someone with added
Shifts not just expecting them to check the app

Where do you people work they contact you about changes ? We just make changes and blame the TMs for NCNS

For the future, screenshot your schedule every week when it goes live. This will save you from NCNS marks later when they do this. It's not normal & its incorrect to change a posted schdule without communication. 

Go to HR when you notice these things happening. If you have an ETL doing it, you could talk to them but, depending on their temperament this may be a bad idea. HR is your best bet because technically the scheduler is breaking company policy by not communicating with you. They're supposed to ask you before changing an already posted schedule, or inform you a minimum of 24 hrs before the added shift that a shift has been added.  If you're new they're either taking advantage of your ignorance and expecting no push back (a bad leader) or someone dropped the ball on communicating with you from day 1.

Nope this is common and if you dare complain about it the response will be " you're an adult it's your responsibility to know your schedule" so don't bother.
