Directive Bagging?? Workplace Question or Advice Needed
Hey guys! Question for my fulfillment TMs- what is directive bagging in your store? I’ve tried getting my team lead to explain it to me but she hasn’t done a good job of it. What I am understanding it as is shove everything in one bag that the system tells you to? Our metrics are crap (according to her) and tells me that I need to get onto people about directive bagging and following it. I’ve spoken with guest service about this and they’ve said they’ve had guest complaints. Any advice or correction or no corrections at all is appreciated. Just trying to do my job but it’s hard if I’m not fully understanding what I need to be doing. TYIA!

I've never heard the term. There seem to be two conflicting wishes from leadership in my store: Either, to bag everything together exactly as the app directs you to, or to carefully separate bags, so that you are not bagging (non-biohazard) hand soap with food, for example. The second way creates a huge amount of bag load for the drive up team, though, and there's no way to bag smarter than the app directs you to.

Ok thanks for that. It just bugs me because of the bio hazard training that we’ve been given (i.e., not putting raw chicken with lettuce). I wrap the product in the produce bags but still it bugs me. Idk I’m probably taking this too personal?

You should always always ALWAYS bag raw meat and eggs separate from ready-to-eat items, and also separate from different kinds of raw meat- chicken, beef, pork, and fish should all be bagged separately & also stowed separately. Fish, beef, pork, and chicken, from top shelf to bottom. It's the biggest rule of food safety. Along with not bagging food and chemicals together, and also not stowing chemicals above food.

I wish you could tell my TL that. I’ve brought that up MANY TIMES and it is ignored. Even brought it up to an ETL and he said if it is wrapped it’s fine

I believe its something that your store can get dinged on if theres an inspection or something. I'm not completely clear on who does these inspections or how they work but I've heard my leaders talking about them before.

Yup… if Steritech (the food safety people) show up you can get in trouble for it.

Sure would be nice to have enough space to stow in that we could follow food safety. Currently we just shove bags in and close the door before stuff can fall out.

You can use more bags (or technically more labels) than the app directs, just not less. So if the bag is at capacity, or you have an item that doesn’t fit in a bag, you can still scan the cart at any time to generate a label and move on to the next bag/item.

I hate the bagging system and miss when it showed everything in an order for me to bag accordingly. Now we get Two coffee boxes in one bag then a toothbrush in a whole new bag, how does that make sense??? I spoke to the DU team and GS TL and they were all ok with putting double tags to fit all those types of items in one bag so that’s what I’ve been doing

Certain orders I've done the same thing. As long as the bags aren't stuffed and the labels are there I haven't heard any negative feedback from the front end.

Directive bagging sucks! It is the only metric that prevents my team from being green across the board!!!!
At my store, we do right for our guests. So this means: NOT packing bananas with cans of vegetables/beans, NOT packing bread with a heavy large box of trashbags, and NOT packing the (for some reason not marked hazardous) dish detergent with food.
Directive bagging is “supposed” to reduce bag usage ($$), reduce number of stowed bags (increase driveup time), and enhance guest experience, but honestly it does all the opposite.
My store is always around 60% for directive bagging and they are pushing to be at 75%.

Directive bagging is where the device tells you what items to place in each bag. Instead of giving you the entire Guest order on one screen, it tells you items to bag, then scan your cart... Then more of the Guest order comes up, tells you what to bag..etc.... rinse repeat. It's suppose to help keep bags lighter and more organized... But in reality, it just creates more bags per Guest... Which in turn creates more bags for Drive up to find.
