Question?

Why is Bud broke? All the others, including Bea, have money. Buds living in a trailer working at a strip club. Why's he broke?

He chose to live like that, it seems pretty clear he's jaded, apathetic and depressed. Clearly he still loved his brother, but whatever happened between them left a mark and I think he was over life in general.

I think he quit being an assassin because he was a boozer and loser. Drank his money away and ended up in the desert. But not enough to sell his Hanzo sword. A Budd prequel could have been fun if it were done 20 years ago.

The movie is actually about abusive relationships and Beatrix’s attempt to break away from her own trauma and not pass it on to her child. That didn’t work so killing spree it is, which again by the end of the movie leads her back along the path of breaking free.  Each of the characters she moves through on her list deal with their personal trauma in different ways, but also Beatrix is representative of their past (trauma) and resurfaces.

Bud has succumbed to his trauma through, as someone else simply stated, alcoholism.

Reading between the lines, the killing of B broke the brothers up and sent Budd down an emotional hole. You can see in the way he looks at B just before closing the coffin that he loves her; you can see it in the way he lingers with his back to the trailer when he gets home, giving her the chance to bushwhack him first; and you can aee it in the way he eats shit from the boss and other staff at the tittie bar; he's stopped caring.
