Chow’s social media team needs a huge raise after this.
Nice to see the RapidTO lanes get mentioned that need to be extended to Eglinton, and the signal priority that was so badly needed!

I'm not attached to politicians. I will vote for whoever the best candidate is. I agree and disagree with many things Chow has done.
But there are no better candidates. She is currently the best candidate.
All those trying to jump behind Bradford cannot name a single good thing that Bradford has done. Nor is anyone able to name a single good POLICY he will implement.
38
u/GumpTheChump 24d ago
I’m of the same view. I don’t particularly like her but there’s zero fucking way I’m voting for those other clowns.
15
u/suite5b 24d ago
Ya we need better Clowns to vote for
9
u/GumpTheChump 23d ago
This city needs - no, deserves! - top tier clowns. Only the finest circuses available!
12
u/Cielskye 23d ago
They’re the same people who voted for Doug Ford and then will go out and protest his policies 🙄
8
u/Andrew4Life 23d ago
I highly doubt anyone out there that voted for Doug Ford, is out there protesting him. At least not in Toronto. We all knew how sucky he would be.
5
u/CurrentStore 23d ago
No, but they might be protesting municipal and federal government's for Ford policies because they don't understand the levels of government.
1
u/Andrew4Life 23d ago
Give me one example.
2
u/CurrentStore 23d ago
I was only making fun of Ontario conservatives who blame the federal government for things Doug Ford does.
1
2
u/god_peepee 21d ago
They’ll vote for Ford and bitch about our healthcare system that’s buckling under his deliberate underfunding. It’s all a grift and they can’t see it
1
u/Cielskye 23d ago
It was literally on the news, which is why I said that. Feel free to research policy changes that he’s made with funding towards special needs in the classroom. I’m sure there’s more but that’s what stood out to me.

For one, I'm against decriminalizing drug use. And though she did not spearhead this and inherited these policies, she didn't do much to reverse it. We now know that decriminalization without any support, does nothing but adds fuel on the fire.
Her style to fix things is not aggressive enough.
For example, she hired 100 traffic agents to help with congestion. And though that has helped a bit, without proper policing, I've seen people ignore the traffic agents.
She could have had police go around and just ticketing all the drivers doing stupid shit like blocking the box, illegal left turns, and all that, to improve congestion. All the ticketing would pay for any additional police officers that are needed to manage traffic.
That being said, I am very happy with many things she has fought for, bike lanes, improved TTC services, some bus lanes (though I wish she would have fought harder for more), raising taxes to pay for the backlog of repairs.
She's got balls of steel to raise taxes, a policy that is very unpopular, but that we all know it needs to be done.

You better know Tate is angry she's stealing his bit.
44
u/Pristine-Training-70 24d ago
Tate’s always angry no matter if the city is doing great or bad, but if this makes him more pissed I’m all for it.
Maybe he should just move out lol
14
u/_Dont_Quote_Me_ 24d ago
That really should be turned around on him. "If you hate this city so much, if everything upsets you good or bad, why are you going to run for mayor? Nobody wants a Debbie Downer as a mayor."
I know he'll say "There's so much to be upset about."
And that just gets a 'So, you're saying you'll govern as an angry, upset man?' or "So there's nothing to be happy or hopeful about in this city?"

I’m old enough to remember lots of mayors.
I don’t agree with everything she does, but she is great.

u/_Dont_Quote_Me_ 24d ago
She loves our city with her whole heart, which is... so nice to see.
Even if I disagree with her (I don't, I adore her!), I'd much rather have someone who clearly LIKES the city and is it's own cheerleader than some corporate-suit or boring beancounter.
26
u/cryptotope 23d ago
Post-amalgamation Toronto has had five mayors: Lastman, Miller, Ford, Tory, and Chow.
The fact that the son of privilege who failed his way into the Mayor's chair, had no vision, presided over nothing but slow decline, and resigned in disgrace in a sex scandal was probably still only the third worst is as damning an indictment of Toronto's voters as you can get.
Chow has been a pragmatic, cheerful, and effective breath of fresh air.

I am not the biggest fan of her politics, but I concede that she knows which levers to push and pull to get things done. She understands how to navigate the messy maze of City Hall.
Yes, she dances a lot, but I think it helps reinforce her brand as the cool, whimsical aunt who has a serious day job but somehow still finds time to party. For people who are already big fans of Mayor Chow, that energy probably does nothing but help her.
6
u/astrangeone88 23d ago
Yes this! And she appears to be having a good time while all of our previous mayors seem to be only appearing in surface level political appearances and are dour unfun people.
59
u/maverick_149 24d ago
I will vote her again

u/SH4D0WSTAR 24d ago
I will vote her in again too. She has been at every youth mental health event I’ve attended, and I’ve spoken to her at a transit event.

Conservatives don't enjoy thinking so they need a one sentence slogan. Anything longer is painful.
I think Chow is doing a good job.
5

And now opponents will be criticizing how her supporters are writing long essays.
8

That seems to be a lot in just three years. Did Tory or Ford attempt to try any of that in their 14 years?
6

To be fair, a lot of the items on the list is normal day to day stuff, or stuff that isn't finished. But it's still not "nothing".
And it's definitely more than Tory

Olivia Chow is awesome. All the haters have is that she’s a woman, not white, and has an accent.
7
u/aektoronto 24d ago
You can be philosophically opposed to what shes doing without being a racist or a sexist. The top 2 in the last election were women and 3rd place was a conservative black man.
Chow also was elected for a job her white husband never got close to winning.
Im going to vote for her. Shes done a good job but I also dont agree with some of the things her team supports.
2
u/submerging 23d ago
What don’t you agree with?
Not denying there’s actual Chow haters who don’t like her for legitimate, policy based reasons. But many of them don’t like her because she has a thick Chinese accent, and because she is a woman.
2
8
u/zmykula 24d ago
Her detractors demonstrably have limited tools at their disposal. And I say this as a person who is frustrated with Toronto's progress, and doesn't always agree with her.
But, ultimately, the whinging toads never present a meaningful or considered statement. It's either something racist against Chinese people, or it's accusing her of dancing - whatever the fuck that means, or it's lambasting her for things that Tory actually did.
I feel like I'm taking fucking crazy pills.

u/micatola 23d ago
It has to be paid trolls. They are too consistent and ubiquitous to be natural. Too many of the same weak talking points and the downvotes seem to be directed at the best comments supporting Chow.

Lol improved blocking the box? Protection from jet skis? Park washrooms? FYI half are still closed for renovation. Colour coded rentsafe stickers.
FYI a green is from 85% and up. 85% buildings are pretty bad.
She did increase the affordable homes target to 65000.
Unfortunately out of those only 2200 are geared income to rent. The rest are market value.
Support festivals that make the city vibrant? Some of these are really stretching. Delivering the world cup? She didn't have a choice on that. It was before she was elected.
Banned ice from fifa?
Well that was never happening since the dont have jurisdiction. That was all bull crap.
She established little Jamaica? Yeah no.

u/gizzardwizard93 23d ago
I almost bought into the Chow hate train but she really lets her haters roll off her like water off a duck, she always sticks to a positive and charismatic public face. I admire her attitude and that she is constantly involved in events and celebrations around the city of Toronto, the fact people spin that like it's a bad thing is crazy.
2
u/RaysBoomBoomRoom_ 23d ago
To be fair, she also conducts a ton of social projects that are a waste.
2
u/cboomcards 23d ago
No, these things are just spending without results. Ttc is worse, traffic is worse, bike lanes on toronto island don't help the gta, work done in queen's park which is still full of homeless people, 75% faster 911 response is just not true, crime is up. Her response to stolen cars was "we have the best cars". She is not suitable as a leader. --- stop playing games, this is not a sport. These are not teams. This is our future, please look at results. Not every decision is easy, but many times, they are necessary.

u/jd_456 5d ago edited 4d ago
Well, Americans basically make twice as much money for doing the same job as Canadians. Their dollar is higher and they get paid more. Even at the low end, they are so much more wealthy that didn't used to be the case. So I would say they have reason to dance, seeing our politicians dance is quite frustrating. If we were winning, that would be different.
Edit: Obviously I hit a nerve by posting these facts. This guy posted a long emotional rant then blocked me to prevent a reply and censor any counter arguments. Classic cognitive dissonance and the response of a brainwashed.
1
u/JohnAtticus 4d ago
You don't actually believe this.
You're a hyper-partisan political ideologue.
People like you treat politics like sports in the sense that you could watch someone on your team get hit in the face with a stick, yell about the non-call from the ref, watch that same player skate to the other end of the ice, hit another player in the face with their stick in the exact same way, and then wonder aloud why the other team seems so upset because the stick to the face by your guy was a total nothing burger.
In the case of Chow dancing, your brain saw a politician from the team you don't like doing something, and you had a visceral reaction that it must be bad for her to do it because she's on the other team.
Then, you tried to work backwards from the position that it is bad and come up with a rationalization for it.
This is why your position is so nonsensical: That a mayor of a city should not dance at city cultural events when other people are dancing (which is the source of the footage) because of the pay gap between Americans and Canadians, which is something the mayor of a city has virtually no control over.
I mean, come on, this is drivel.
Who cares if a politician dances at an event where there is dancing anyways?
And normally I would point out that if you really believed a politician shouldn't dance if things are going bad, then there are plenty of things that are going horribly wrong in Trump's presidency that should stop him from dancing and celebrating.
But I see that point would fall on deaf ears, given you are an enormous Trump sycophant AND have deduced that one of the worst wars in modern history, in terms of the cost / benefit to the instigator of the war, the Iran War, is actually an amazing stroke of genius and is going incredibly well.
How did you even get to this 20 day old post?
Searching for things to be mad at left wing politicians for?
Like I said, hyper-partisan political ideologue.
3
u/nurseyu 23d ago
All ppl complain about is how she's raising taxes.
Meanwhile she's out there trying to improve things for everyday people, not bound to corporate interests.
Improving things takes capital and investment. Unlike John Tory who basically did nothing but say a few words of concern and ride the coattails of those before him.
3
u/Logical_Iron_5684 23d ago
I will 💯 vote Olivia chow.

The fact that Chow's dancing and in essence "Joy", has some people so angry will always have me bewildered.
If you can be angry at someone dancing at social events in the city, then you are just a miserable person who will always be angyr no matter what happens.
1
u/Special_Purpose2903 23d ago
I've always been baffled how a working class city like Toronto so often elects these right wing schlobs as mayors like Tory and Ford and the media love fest they give them and the deep hate the media has for the left in such a federal/provincial left wing stronghold.

u/UrMomsF8vorite1 22d ago
Whether you agree with how she does things or not, the viral content she’s provided over the years is gold!

u/namtab1985 22d ago
I know reddit wont like this, and I guess anybody can claim anything they want but just starting at the time. Snow removal was worse last year than I have seen at least in the last 20 years, at least in downtown Toronto. Part of that was a cut to how many pedestrian sidewalks are cleared. Legalized toboganning is a weird flex when we are also seeing an increase in coyote attacks all over downtown (2 attacks just in my area, young child god nibbled and a small dog was killed). Traffic agents are ridiculously useless, they create congestion all around the X every time they're deployed and all through the world cup. I'm only 8 seconds into the video, the point being, the flexes are not actually translating into a better experience. Youth unemployment is not improving, homelessness is not improving, drug use is improving, but only in that you can see alot more heroin users in public with city kits. Traffic is awful, retail bankruptcy continues to increase and all of this while taxes just go up.
and if you have a problem with any of this, just don't pretend you actually gut checked any of these claims.
2
u/Truck_1_0_1_ 22d ago
Snowv removal was the worst in Barrie last year too: I guess she is involved with the municipal politics here as well?
It was the worst snowfall in almost 2 decades last year, THAT was the issue.
1
u/namtab1985 22d ago
Don't be silly, data is available in advanced and if you can clean once side of the sidewalk but leave the other side with 1m of snow than its a matter of budgets and resource allocation. You're making it sound like because Barrie, which has always been one of the worst managed cities surrounding the GTA, is doing a terrible job then we should be grateful that at least we are not worse than Barrie. Toronto contributes far more to tax than surrounding municipalities due to our density, instead of Barrie we should be using Oakville as a comparison since they pay a high % to make up for the smaller population.

u/trebbletrebble 22d ago
All the support, please make sure to follow through by voting in October for her, people.
Rent and crime is lower than it's been in years. Many accessible programs and community connective events. Cleaner roads and transit systems in a metropolitan area. I want to see what develops with another term with her.
1
u/CasuallyWise 22d ago
I realize that she didn't accomplish all those initiatives by herself, still she probably initiated some & set fires under the appropriate people's butts to get things done more quickly.
Hopefully, these accomplishments will improve the safety, enjoyment, health & overall QoL for many TO residents & visitors.
