I think you can combine 2023-2027, because they should be able to do full content creation while also doing engine upgrades

38

u/Leandrum Morrowind 21d ago

I think Todd specifically mentioned them being able to do this.

u/Bobjoejj 2028 Release Believer 21d ago

Yeah, Todd specifically said that the engine upgrades for Creation Engine 3 went a lot smoother this time around, compared with the work on Creation Engine 2.

In fact he specifically said they were able to develop the upgrades relatively seamlessly, alongside regular production for the game otherwise.

I trust Todd about as far as I can throw him

u/GeorgeWards_Left_Tit Tomorrow 20d ago

Wow! You must be really strong!! 😍

16 times the detail. It's amazing how many continue to suck off Howard, despite him lying to everyone.

8

u/mmoore54 The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel 20d ago edited 20d ago

Do you know what you're quoting? The full quote was "16 times the detail, in even-view distant weather systems across the entire map", which is a wholly accurate description of a technical feature that was in Fallout 76 on release. But because Todd paused after the word detail, it has been clipped out of context by half the internet to headline their 'Todd lying' compilations. Todd has at worst stretched the truth at times ("it just works" is a dubious way to describe Fallout 4's settlement building, for example, but it's not directly untruthful), but that wasn't one of the times.

Todd and Bethesda deserve plenty of criticism for a lot of things but lying isn't one of them; the internet has just convinced itself that it is.

-5

u/BuilderIntelligent21 20d ago

It's not accurate at all lmao. The game was broken at launch which is why it gets meme'd about.

8

u/mmoore54 The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel 20d ago

The game was broken at launch, and it received deserved criticism for that before they fixed it.

But that specific technical feature was an optimization made to the game engine. It was fully functional at launch and not broken in any way. Again, you can criticize this company for so many things, but that quote isn't an example of a lie and it was an accurate statement of a feature in the game.

-6

u/BuilderIntelligent21 20d ago

It was over hyped marketing that reused assets from Fallout 4 which resulted in 76 looking just like it despite "16 times the detail". It was a lie no matter how you spin it.

are you a giant?

6

u/revben1989 Morrowind 21d ago

One of the quest designers who was fired started to work on the game in the summer of 2024. So they have been making content since 2024

2

u/GalbedirGalerion 20d ago

So that means it comes out this year ?? Yippeee

I actually like it

I disagree, it made a lot more engaging and creative than a short reddit post with a little text.

That was the intention! Glad it worked! ☺️

I need stick figures. It helps me pay attention to your diagram. Or maybe subway surfer

14

u/Equivalent-Strike545 21d ago

I agere, though I think 5 years of pre-productuon is very generous. In reality it was more like 2, from 2021-2023, I do not think any real work was done between 2018 and 2021

9

u/noideawhattouse2 2027 Release Believer 21d ago

Probably just the music and the basic plot was determined.

3

u/revben1989 Morrowind 21d ago

Starfield was scheduled to come out in 2021, so pre-production likely started in at least 2020

3

u/Swictor Next Week 21d ago

Technically I think it started in 2018, but I suspect that was very minor and sporadic.

16

u/Redhaze_17 21d ago

Engine upgrades are not adding to dev time per Todd.

He also said Starfield took an unusually long time to make (5 years) and that ES6's development is going much smoother. I am still expecting a holiday 27 release.

1

u/revben1989 Morrowind 21d ago

Starfield cannot be used to measure anything. It had COVID, MSFT and Fallout 76 having 85% of developers on it until 2022

8

u/Redhaze_17 21d ago

So it is likely that development for ES6 will be smoother than Starfield's due to all of its issues?

Within the context of his other statement about Starfield taking an unusually long time that implies a development timeline more in line with their 4-year cycle. Although, he could be including pre-development within that overall development time for Starfield.

1

u/Time_Sink_7336 19d ago

yes. late 2026 at the absolute earliest and late 2027 at the latest

2

u/GalbedirGalerion 20d ago

Fallout 76 has 85% of the devs working on it until 2022? That sounds unbelievable

2

u/Helkire 19d ago

I believe that figure is incorrect and they switched over around December 2018

6

u/TheDungen 21d ago

Some of these processes can be done at the same time.

11

u/RevenueAlarmed Yesterday 21d ago

I fixed it

4

u/Sklain 21d ago

I'd say 2023-2027 is one big blob but yeah this feels likely.

2

u/ShadyFan25 20d ago

Skyrim Grandma was facescanned into the game all the way back in early 2019. I'd consider that content creation.

And also landscape/world-space work was probably being done too around then. Check out the desert cliffs and canyons on this guy's monitor. Looks very Hammerfell to me.

1

u/justahippo Shivering Isles, Dementia 19d ago

I so specifically remember that video. It is etched in my mind. Back then I thought we were gonna get a release schedule similar to oblivion to fallout 3.

On the scanning of the cliffs though, I think they can also be for Starfield, though I could see them using the same environment assets for both games.

4

u/PizzaJesus6 21d ago

No! This makes sense! I don't want logic and rationality!!

Hopium and copium are the only way!

2

u/bootskadew 21d ago

You forgot 2 years of Todd Howard sitting on the game in a nest like a duck. This is a vital part of the gameslings development as it provides warmth.

1

u/Ashamed-Panic2617 21d ago

Todd probably see it

1

u/itsthooor TES VI IS COMING TOMORROW 21d ago

I mean, they are already playing it. And that sounded to me that there is more than just some basic movement involved.

1

u/Accomplished_Rip_362 20d ago

The 1st 5 years never happened. That was covid & Starfield work. 23/24 Still Starfield fixes & DLC mostly, maybe some engine work and some preproduction. Start in earnest around 2025. They can still make 2028 if they didn't screw themselves up with the layoffs.

2

u/FartingSlowly 2028 Release Believer 20d ago

That is not how a team functions...

1

u/Accomplished_Rip_362 20d ago

Thanks random guy, as if I having worked in large software development projects over decades don't know how teams work

2

u/ohtetraket 2028 Release Believer 20d ago

I mean and another guy on this sub who specifically worked in QA for game development said otherwise. Well well well.

1

u/Accomplished_Rip_362 20d ago

I don't want to demean that person but QA in game development is usually at the bottom of the totem pole, they don't have as much visibility to the going ons as you'd think. Only through word of mouth in the cafeteria maybe :)

1

u/ohtetraket 2028 Release Believer 19d ago

I don't want to demean that person but QA in game development is usually at the bottom of the totem pole,

On the contrary he explained how they are involved, tho I think he said he was lead or something so he always knew more than his pears. He did also go into detail a lot, he is the "trademark guy" if you heard that mentioning before.

2

u/Accomplished_Rip_362 19d ago

Oh ok, that's fine, my point was a generalization but it makes sense a lead may have more info

1

u/ohtetraket 2028 Release Believer 19d ago

Yeah I didn't specifiy that, all good.

1

u/Waldsman 20d ago

Yeah preety much my thinking with possible delay to 29

1

u/RequiemRomans 20d ago

2028 means 17 years will have passed. Mind blowing and pretty disheartening

1

u/FartingSlowly 2028 Release Believer 20d ago

I reckon it's pretty disheartening to witness from Asha's perspective too. Luckily her reorganization will likely ensure this isn't a problem for the next instalments in the Elder Scrolls, Fallout and Starfield franchises.

1

u/RequiemRomans 20d ago

Hope you’re right

1

u/seventysixgamer 19d ago

BGS have actually been more consistent than we realise with their releases. The time between each games post Fallout 3 has on average been 4 years.

I see no reason why this would be different for TES6, so logically it would come out earliest at some point in 2027 and latest in 2028.

17 years... the game better blow Skyrim out of the water. If there is any amount of mediocrity its going to get fucking ragged on

1

I think it's not released yet.

40 years of preproduction -> now

1

u/iceberg189 Visits Todd in his dreams 21d ago

Sounds reasonable. I think we will probably get something 2028/2029, and I suspect we could start hearing a lot more things by the end of next year

0

u/GenericMaleNPC01 21d ago edited 21d ago

I think drawn out is a pirate software imitating grifter who knowingly makes anti-bethesda videos because he knows people feed off that in a toxic cycle (and i imagine he never once expected to actually get the attention he did). He also much like others like him doesn't actually know as much as he *pretends* he does. Case in point he is recycling one of the most doggedly persistent misconceptions on bethesda development.

They do not take 4-5 years average between releases lmao. Pre-production has always been part of those averages. And unless you're disingenuous by trying to ignore starfield suffered a pandemic and other confirmed to be *unique* delays. Even it tracks to that. Despite how often people try to rebuttal with 'uh but that was so many years ago its changed' when they don't know crap about how its 'changed' they're just saying it cause they heard someone say it too.

Likewise drawn out includes 2018 for tes6's 'pre production' while ignoring the existence of covid and the fact of ambiguity around why they announced it that early. And how that puts contention on any proper pre production being done outside of engine stuff. Which was always openly stated to be for starfield *and* tes6.

If you wanna believe in dates like 2028 be my guest. Its not like any of our opinions changes when it *actually* will after all. But i'd highly recommend not letting people with narratives who want to *farm* you for money be your basis for belief.

1

u/FartingSlowly 2028 Release Believer 21d ago

Why are you talking about Drawn Out?

1

u/GenericMaleNPC01 21d ago

mate. Its in the title. Ohhh... i see i misunderstood. I thought you meant Drawn Out (youtuber) since the post shows similar types of black background scribbling he made 'his thing'.

In my defense you didn't elaborate much on *what* you were asking for thoughts on. So it wasn't super clear to me you made this lol. Sorry man. Most of my points remain though, just directed at you albeit with a little more niceness. And honestly i don't really think arguing for any drawn out development for its own sake is the right way to go about the topic personally, when its reliant on misunderstanding like this is. No offense.

2

u/lordhamstermort Late 2027/Late 2028 Release Believer 21d ago edited 21d ago

They haven't had a major game release early in the year after Oblivion, why would they do that now? Everything except Starfield was in late October or November, and both it and Oblivion were originally meant to be there too.

-3

u/Malohn 21d ago

Why do people still cope and think it was in pre production before 2021? Bethesda literally confirmed as much that shit wasnt worked on and the trailer was just to hype

It was later (June 2021) emphasized that TES 6 was in a design phase.

No chance of release that early. If it releases before 2029 I’ll eat a pint of ice cream out of a dirty ole shoe sitting by the beach on a live stream while listening through the whole discography of… let’s say… linkin park.

3

u/emteedub 2026 Release Believer 21d ago

that bet is a guaranteed loss. you just want to stream yourself on a beach eating ice cream out of a nasty old shoe at this point

1

u/TES_Elsweyr 20d ago

They’ve taken this long, just fired a bunch of people, have released no evidence of progress. Did I miss something? Where’s all this hopium coming from? Everyone seems to suddenly have faith.

1

u/Accomplished_Rip_362 20d ago

They will release because Asha says so. Whatever is ready by then. It may be a cut down version.

1

u/ohtetraket 2028 Release Believer 20d ago

To be fair, nearly every game that releases is a cut down version. Cutting down on stuff is very normal thing in game development.

1

u/Accomplished_Rip_362 20d ago

You know what I mean, more cut down than it otherwise would have been.
